The monthly shanty/forebitter/ballad session at the Press Room in Portsmouth NH, will happen on 16 July from 3:30 to 7:30 PM.

Special guests, "Four Shillings Short" will be coming by on the way to a gig at the Elysium Arts Folk Club.

We will also have t shirts for those who were with us for the Tall Ship.

Hoping to see some new friends and old; especially some who have been way too long among the missing - Tom

Tom-

I'll be there for sure but the summer is becoming increasingly busy so I may be there solo.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Just heard that Lynn Feingold (the Tavern Wench) will also be at the session. Got the makings of a pretty good gathering...not that we've ever had a bad one.

Aw, Micca! I'm really missing you, too, right now! Prolly not a good idea to scream yourself sick, though.

Just watch this, repeatedly...

Tami-

I believe everyone is welcome in this tavern, whatever age they might be. However, they have to be 20 or so to order alcoholic drinks.

Lots of under agers at The Press Room. They can't have alcoholic drinks, but no problems with them being there. Hey, we've had musicians playing at the sessions before they could legally order drinks.

Should be a delightful session!

It would be nice if Mary could come -- haven't seen her in ages! Waaaaay too long!!! (Uh, she can legally drink in New Hampshire...;-) )

Anyone carpooling up from Gloucester?

Don't be shocked when you see me in glasses instead of contacts (with reading specs on my head). Got some kind of eye irritation, so no contacts for a bit. Rinsing out the eye with saline and rue/fennel tincture. Bit of a sore throat, too, so gargled with goldenseal and saline.

Ach! Is this what I get for shouting back at Grover Norquist on the Diane Rehm show the other day?!?

Now I just have to see (no pun intended) which pair of back-ups I see best out of. None of them work as well as my RGPs, of course, even though they're the same Rx.

Is this causing my strange anxiety level for which I can find no reason?

You will be missed.

I'm not going to be there, either. Been awake more or less since 2 AM and had to be in West Ossipee by 8 AM to pick up The Boy. I will probably be curled up sound asleep in a corner somewhere.

Tami, that was me yesterday. Fortunately, got a decent night's sleep last night after an unbelievably long day.

Jeri, are you in Canada for an event or just visiting (or both)? If you get to that dollar store with the cool little clip on lights (provided they still have them), buy a bunch. The replacement batteries cost $1.69 each and there are 3 or 4 of 'em in the light.

I've looked every time I've been here, but they haven't had them.
Plus, the US dollar is worth something like $0.07 Canadian now

Comparatively small group at the session today, but a delightful bunch of voices and songs. Not going to even begin to set down the list.

Lynn Feingold, the Tavern Wench, made it back to the session -- haven't seen (or heard) her in several years. Four Shillings Short called before we left for the Press Room to say they were being dragged off to Newburyport before their gig at Elysium Arts in Rollinsford tonight, so would miss the session. Annie Storr's son, Jesse Greer, led a few songs. And Jeff Warner was at long last back from his English tour and sang the songs he did on the recent CD "Short Sharp Shanties: Sea Songs of a Watchet Sailor" (volume 1). And Marty...we haven't seen Marty for a few weeks and he, too, was back.

Good company, good beer, good music.

More later. I'm going to check how the photos came out and go to bed -- gotta work tomorrow.

It really was a small but special session. It's not often that I attend a sea music session of shanties, ballads, lumberjack songs, Irish songs, and drinking songs, and stories, all intermeshing when one another. There were about a dozen singers. I also haven't seen Barbara Benn for some time.

I got to launch another new song for me, "Rathlin Head" by C. Fox Smith as adapted for singing by Mike Kennedy. I only stumbled on a couple of words, which I managed to dredge up with some help from listeners: "Does anyone know a word that begins with either a B or a D that would fit in here? Yes, 'blind' will work nicely!"

I note that Marty is already posting photos to his Facebook page.

Maybe more tomorrow.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

"Mr. Addledum (version of The Old She-Crab) – Lynn F."

This was an entirely different version of this old song, number 4 in our collection, I believe.

Just learned from Peter about the playlist posting, a great help to a neophyte like me! Re: song #14, I learned it as "The Girls Around Cape Horn", from the Smithsonian "Classic Maritime Music" CD. David Coffin sings a different, though similar, version titled "Rounding The Horn", which tells of a much more harrowing passage around the Cape, probably British in origin, while "The Girls Around Cape Horn" seems "Americanized".
