Well, The Wilsons are ready for the Albert Hall!

Every Saturday afternoon there is a Radio 3 programme World Routes. Last Saturday it featured the newly-returned Andy Kershaw visiting the Sayan Ring ethnic music festival in Siberia.

Late Junction also includes folk music. On Wednesday 20 July, there will be a set from Spiers & Boden, as well as sets from Moulettes and Kate Tempest.

Peter Bellamy saw it all. He christened them "The Northern Wilsonia - a vocal orchestra" and now here they are, actually sharing the stage with the Northern Sinfonia.

They come from Billingham - and the BBC is billing'em above the Northern Synfonia! Their local football team has a unique name too, Billingham Synthonia.

I thought June Tabor's 2 songs were the best I'd heard from her - mostly free from her usual affectations - just really well sung. It also made me realise just how unsuited to a 'trained' voice trad folk music is - the difference between the 'classically sung Shallow Brown and Tabor's version was telling

I agree with the comments above.

I'm not a fan of June Tabor, but I too thought she sang extremely well. I thought Kathryn Tickell's arrangements were very good too. Compared well with Grainger's orchestral arrangements, some of which went on a bit, especially Green Bushes.

I was also pleased to hear that the audience sounded enthusiastic.

The whole performance was fantastic, a great mix between the traditional styles of the Wilsons, June and Kathryn's band to that of the BBC singers and the Northern Synfonia. But the hightlight of the night for us was the finale, the Scotch Strathspey and Reel with singing from Wilsons and the BBC singers. The Wilsons gave an outstanding performance of the Bay of Mexico earlier in the night, and showed the BBC singers a thing or two in the Strathspey. In all a fantastic concert well done to everyone.

With so many performers from the north-east, perhaps this concert could be repeated at the Sage in Gateshead. The Wilsons deserved more time - they could stand in for the BBC Singers.

My comment above "Absolutely Brilliant!" was not meant as a comment about June Tabor in isolation, but more the nights performances as a whole. I would absolutely agree with the comments of Julie and henryp, the Wilsons performance was fantastic and more deserving of more time. It would be well worth the journey north to the Sage to see again. Well done to all involved!

It doesn't take long to fall in love with Percy Grainger. An hour should do it, especially when, as here, the 50th anniversary of the Australian composer and arranger was celebrated in a manner only the Proms could pull off. The excellent Northern Sinfonia, resident ensemble of the Sage Gateshead, occupied half the stage, leaving the rest to Northumbrian piper Kathryn Tickell, the evening's curator, her four-man ensemble, five a cappella brothers from Teeside called the Wilson Family, and the BBC Singers who, as Tickell explained, just happened to be in the area.
Then June Tabor took to the stage to sing Green Bushes unaccompanied.
The hall suddenly felt quite empty. As if sculpted from the earth, Tabor's voice resonates with ancient calm, both consoling and unmanning its listener. Like many great folk songs, Green Bushes expresses neither joy nor sadness, but something far more immanent. Tabor's voice is like that, too. It just is.
Green Bushes and Shallow Brown, which Tabor sung later to similarly devastating effect, is of course not by Grainger, but he collected both songs along with hundreds of others. The magic of this late-night Prom came from hearing the folk arrangements alongside more traditional settings. What emerged was the unrestrained daring of Grainger's ear, and the profound musical respect for the material, attending to the wandering ambiguities and stark realities of the originals. There is nothing patronising about his "use" of folk songs, because they are so clearly born of love.
Grainger fantasised about bringing together diverse forces for his Scotch Strathspey and Reel, including deep-sea sailors "miraculously endowed with the gift of polyphonic improvisation". The Wilson Family and their less hirsute partners in the BBC Singers possess this gift, and their combination with the orchestra for Grainger's exuberant concoction, conducted by the saxophonist John Harle, made for a wonderful finale.

We've had this conversation before. General opinion is that you will be able to listen to the BBC Radio 3 broadcast on the BBC iplayer - it's BBC Prom 25 Grainger. See if it works - you've still got six days left. If it does work, you should also be able to hear the Cambridge Folk Festival Highlights on BBC Radio 2. However, you will need a specific program to watch the TV broadcast of the Prom.

Wonderful concert. Not only were the individual participants excellent, it was brilliantly put together. Tabor's singing knee-tremling for me as always, Tickell's playing (and her band's) and arrangements superb, the BBC singers made a decent fist of Shallow Brown (of course they could never come close tothe pathos Tabor imparts, but I liked their bass soloist nevertheless) and the Sinfonia proved a lot more versatile than I would have given them credit for before I heard them. But the revelation for me were the Wilsons, I have never heard them sing better and more closely - perhaps the absence of banter helped? (just a tease, Mike!). But seriously, the Wilsons on the night could have substituted for the BBC singers on anything, I felt.

Can't wait for the 14th August

Was at last night's Royal Albert Hall prom (5 Aug): an electrifying performance of Mahler's 2nd Symphony (Resurrection) by the Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra - a product of Venezuela's extraordinary experiment in working for social change through music. The programme, El Sistema, has 250,000 students actively engaged in pre-school orchestras (4-6 age group), 90 children's orchestras (7-16), 135 symphony orchestras (16-20) and 30 professional adult orchestras. Threequarters of those involved are living below the poverty line.

Under their conductor Gustavo Dudamel the Simon Bolivar SO, which was originally a youth orchestra, has become truly worldclass, as might be confirmed by anyone who saw tonight's broadcast (6 Aug) on BBC2 of last night's performance. Dudamel, who is also musical director of the LA Phil, has extended the Venezuela scheme into the USA and is supporting its implementation in Sweden, Scotland and England.

El Sistema must go down as a major item on the plus side for Hugo Chavez's sometimes controversial stint in office.

It's going to be broadcast on BBC4 TV at 7.30pm BST on Sunday 14 August, so you've got a little longer to make some arrangements to watch or record it. You could even arrange a trip here.

Correction! Radio Times gives the BBC4 TV broadcast as 7.00pm BST on Sunday 14 August. BST, British Summer Time, is one hour ahead of GMT, Greenwich Mean Time.

It's followed at 8.10pm by a repeat of Come Clog Dancing - Treasures of English Folk Dance.

Didn't really believe the 5 star reviews (Guardian, FT, etc) but, having just watched it - yeh, that was just 'something else'. If the BEEB are listening, give us all more of this!
Kath Tickell's vision and her band's performance was fantastic. She obviously loves Grainger and her choice of NE collaberators couldn't have been better - June Tabor (an adopted northerner I believe) was superb, The Wilson Family, as has been said, surely deserve the Albert Hall stage to themselves one of these days, the Northern Sinfonia were terrific and the BBC Singers were a perfect compliment - all brought together by the 'easy', laid back conductor John Harle. This was a Proms to be savoured again, and again and, with a bit of luck again - next year.

A great prom. Even the Wilson's scrubbed up well and performed brilliantly - although I think I prefer them 'live' :-)

If there were more programmes like this I am certain I would go back to listening to the radio.

I confess to not finding it easy to fully appreciate classical musicians performing folk music (no matter how well it's played!). That aside, what a great step forward to have such wonderful ambassadors of folk music - Tickell, Tabor and the Wilsons - taking part in the Proms. And such excellent performances!

It's a while since I've seen Tickell's band. Blimey, they're good!

It's a superb band, isn't it? The only thing that grated - and it's just the teensiest, weensiest of grates - was the pickup on the guitar. It had that rather plasticky timbre that spoils the acoustic sound of the instrument. But that's a minor caveat - he's a great performer.

Anyone who is rejected by BBC's Iplayer should try a programme called Expat Shield, that is how I just watched it in Canada.

Yikes. I was totally underwhelmed by the whole thing. June "I'm a folk singer and I'm here to depress you" Tabor indeed sang well, but what a grim start to what should have been an upbeat event. I can't think that Percy would have been very impressed. The whole place lit up with Kathryn Tickell's band every time they appeared (which wasn't often enough or long enough). The orchestral playing was routine (the conductor seemed at times to be doing little more than keeping the beat) and there are far better versions of Grainger's music on CD, and I shouldn't be saying that about a live performance. And we were regaled with Drunken bloody Sailor and Shallow bloody Brown. It was a concert for the folkie in-crowd only. Which will shrivel all the more if that's the best representation of ourselves we can come up with. Heavy, man. Jeez, we even had regulation finger in ear. Wot an advert!

Sorry to hear it was less than satisfying for you, Steve - but beauty, of course, is in the ear of the beholder.

Interesting comment on June Tabor. I've never found her singing depressing. Intense, yes, and very moving. Still, different strokes, etc.
