Not sure what the 'pilot' was - Nothing on my listings. It was the first of a 10 part series at 9pm tonight and was very good indeed with potential to be brilliant. And, yes, it is on iPlayer :-)

Lots of US involvement anyone over there know if it is being shown stateside as well?

Cheers

It's been shot with an American company. (Starz? does that make sense).

A bit too much shooting and gore for my taste. A bit X-Files, isn't it? And the black copter shooting doesn't even graze anyone in the landrover.

Wonder if anyone from the original A-Team had a hand in it?:-)

I don't know of Starz but if it helps make it in the US, good luck to them. How will the Welsh accects go down I wonder?

Another homogenized Beeb production which, with the sexed-up Dr Who, is blurring the lines between adult and kids' tv. Nice work Russell T. blinkin' Davis.

I liked the grisly scene where they snipped away the last scorched links to some-one's head, to see if it still lived.
I wanted them to go further.
How much of the head could be discarded with and which bit would stay alive?

I'm usually quite disappointed in clumsy British sci-fi plots, they're way too pedestrian, too many boring housewives (with boring little husbands), too much tedious so-called romance, too much domestic bla bla, too many stories featuring brats intended to be of interest to mumsy types, too cringingly sentimental and little in the way of the vast sweeping imaginative horizons I want in sci-fi. It's like they're scripting Eastenders in space.

If there was a scene with a black helicopter chasing a jeep along a beach, we watched them filming that. It's Rhossili sands, just a mile from where we live.

"Officer Don"?
I thought it was 'Nedry' from Jurassic Park keeping his science fiction credentials going.

Comment in the Sun today (spotted by a colleague) a sex scene between captain Jack & a barman is likely to be cut by the BBC!

Exactly... I'm not interested in the personal lives of my sci-fi characters. I'm not interested in who they're kissing, holding hands with, exchanging coy glances with, who (or how) they're screwing (or indeed the baby-shaped byproduct of such activities, if and when one is imposed on the hapless viewer).

Just let 'em get on with their sci-fi jobs and I'm a happy bunny. Leave all that relationship blah (including the so-called "sexy" bits) to reality-based soap operas..

Gimme seven of nine over a red-headed bint in a mini-skirt anyday, at least 7 had her priorities straight, she was sci-fi all the way!

Mind you, despite me moaning about what I see as the weaknesses of British sci-fi, I'm just grateful to get ANY sci-fi on telly tbh!
So I'll still definitely be watching the second episode.. ;-)

'Livelylass', you're a girl after my own heart! Got it in one! As I've said, several times here, TV SciFi has bugger all to do with SF and everything to do with f***ing soap opera! Russel T. Davies is a complete cretin - he should be put up against a wall and shot (after a little light torture, of course)!

I would have thought some cavity probing with alien instruments would be more fitting :-)

And surely we are not going to get embroiled in a discussion on what is sci fi? Surely anything that is vaguely scientific and fictional is sci fi. As long as it isn't performed by a horse of course. Whatever next - what is folk music?

Science fiction can be traced back at least as far as Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin, and possibly further.
Debates about what is, and what is not, science fiction abound.

Anyway - Got to get the wine in for tonight's episode.

There was a journey to the Moon story written by some guy called Lucian of Samosata in classical times, and another by Cyrano de Bergerac (he of the nose), so that puts SF back a good long way.

The section where they try to save Captain Jack from poisoning was reminiscent of Doctor Who trying to revitalise himself with various kitchen supplies (can't remember the episode) also the call for back-up from earth doctors "How do we create an antidote using only materials available in a plane" seemed to hark back to Apollo13.

But enjoyable anyway.

I'm still giving it the benefit of the doubt, but a bit disappointed so far. It seems to have lost the quirkiness of the original, which was part of what made it so appealing and unusual.

In the context of such fun and games Dane's crime is uncalled for. The rest of it is very much as one would expect - I just hope the pay-off isn't going to be as crushingly naff as the last series.

Details of Danes' crime may seem uncalled for, but if he's to be rehabilitated (this is a possibility only) then it is important to see just how low he has sunk first.
In episode 2 we are already seeing some women starting to feel some sympathy for him.

Last night's episode was perfectly appalling. Gwen becomes a whiney little turn coat and promptly abandon's the world to Great and Powerful Unknown Evil Forces because her family are being held hostage. Unexpected intervention from the colleagues - who she deceived in order to abduct and sacrifice their boss to the Unknown Evil Forces - saves the day and promptly everyone loves everyone again.

Two things I gleaned from this, that the Great and Powerful Unknown Evil Force threatening the entire world is actually pretty useless, and that Gwen should have stayed at home as a housewife instead of becoming an undercover agent dedicated to combating Great and Powerful Unknown Evil Forces which threaten the entire world.

Meh!

Personally, the fact that it's on at the same time as the American 'Killing' (I've got a recorder) means I get the chance to compare the development of the two, and I must say that the only reason I'm still watching the latter is to compare it to the Danish version (unfavourably). Of course there are bits where the 'suspensiom of disbelief' is stretched almost to breaking point, but with Eve Myles, Lauren Ambrose and Nana Visitor (shame she's not doing the alternative Nerys) who's complaining.

I'm watching it to find out how the Miracle came about and how they fix it. The rest is a waste of time. They killed the pretty nurse and the only interesting villain as well.

It's so much better whenever Jack/Gwen aren't doing anything. The camp scenes were brilliant, and then Gwen appeared and was her usual idiotic self.

We all watch for all our reasons. Mine has been the actress playing Gwen.

My responsible adult says similar things about Cap'n Jack. Or at least did until he started bowling from the pavilion end rather gratuitously. Now, (wait for it...) she doesn't know which way to turn....

Ian - Tsk, tsk. I thought my jokes were bad:-)

I thought Gwen showed herself as being quite hard and determined in the last one, rather than whimpy as someone earlier suggested. Ah well, different strokes I suppose...

I was a bit confused as to what all the flashbacks were for and assumed it was just 'look at how modern and open minded we are'. But I think the last scene cleared it all up. What love can do, eh?
