Subject: Tinariwen denied entry into Canada

Just got this note from Steve Edge:

The Malian group Tinariwen has been denied entry to Canada. This draconian measure has prevented audiences at the Winnipeg Folk Festival last weekend and the Vancouver Folk Music Festival, which opens today, the rare opportunity to see this fine band.

I am amazed and extremely disappointed. The band has been here before, with no problems. They are currently on tour in the USA, which has a much more stringent process for screening "exceptional aliens".

The Canadian Consulate in L.A. has failed to reply to any of the letters of support from local MPs and the Minister for Culture.

It is all very sad.

I had not realised that Canada was such a small (and small-minded) country.

Any idea of the reason given for denial of entry?

Pointless letter. Doesn't explain anything, then goes on to insult without justification.

Possible answer here:
"In 1980, Libyan ruler Muammar al-Gaddafi put out a decree inviting all young Tuareg men who were living illegally in Libya to receive full military training. Gaddafi ......... Ag Alhabib and his bandmates answered the call and received nine months of training. They answered a similar call in 1985, this time by leaders of the Tuareg rebel movement in Libya, and met felow musicians ........ The musicians joined in a collective (now known as Tinariwen) .....
"In 1989 the collective left Libya and moved to Ag Alhabib's home country of Mali........In 1990 the Tuareg people of Mali revolted against the government, with some members of Tinariwen participating as rebel fighters.

They have apparently not participated in military acts since 1992, but this may have been enough to rule against them, particularly in light of Canada's recognition of the Benghazi government.

The above from Wikipedia. I don't know anything beyond that; it may be misleading.

The rather long URL appears to have truncated in the link above.

Sun article should work?

John
