A sad loss. An extraordinarily productive life. Tubby and Roy can be said to have been the reason that the male stranglehold on Morris was initially broken (largely because of the Sidmouth workshops which Bill Rutter initiated) - and they supplied the repertoire. And don't forget Tubby also ran the Bath University ceilidhs - before ceilidhs became fashionable. Tubby was a visionary who had more influence than most people realise. R.I.P.

Had a lift with Tubby once - can't remember where - and he happily played his 3 hole pipe as he drove along. Wonder if he ever got stopped by the police for that. A true gentleman, sorely missed but he got so much enjoyment out of life, a lesson to us all.

In 1968 Tubby turned my violin into a fiddle and I embarked on a life time of Morris dancing. He didn't turn a hair at a 'female' musician, in fact he welcomed the challenge. Still playing and dancing I shall always be grateful for the course Tubby set me on.

raymond blake has just told us of tubby,s death ,we remember him and the bath team very well as we were members of the folk comittie. that group brought such spirit to the festival.    our thought,s are with betty. our shop a jewellers was right next door to harry and family   pub   which of course was there headquarters.       tubby you were a legend and will never be forgotten.

There we all were, sitting round the kitchen table, drinking coffee, putting the world to right and having a laugh. It all seemed so natural. When I thought about the people present I realised that we were such a diverse group. There were Tubby and Betty, in their 50s, the odd person in their 30s, Tom and I now graduated and young professionals(!), a few students and Dominic with some of his school friends. Where else could we be? It was Tubby and Betty's home and we were all always welcome. Yes, morris had brought us together but their love and fellowship led to life long friendship. RIP Tubby and Betty.

I was squire of Bath City forty tears ago. Such a cast of characters that no writer could dream up - and in charge of all, Tubby. His house in Timsbury was like bedlam on a busy day and everyone was well fed and watered. How Betty did it I can't even guess. A substantial influence on my early life and possibly the drawing to a close of a generation. Beanacht dhilis de, Tubby.

Tubby hosted nineteen Black Jokers for three days in his flat in Bath in 1981. He turned the flat over to us, and moved in with his daughter. In the morning, he and his daughter came over and made breakfast for us. In the evening, he led us off to pubs where we could dance, in places like Wells and Cheddar, then bring us back to the flat and entertain us, before leaving to return the next morning.

Saying he was generous does not begin to convey the hospitality he showed us.

A lovely man, with talented sons. The late Jim reynolds was an equally inspiring teaher in the early 70's.

For a long time in the late 70s-early 80s, Sidmouth seemed incomplete without the ground-breaking Morris Workshops led by Tubby and Roy Dommett.
He also took part in the tunearounds at the Balfour Inn. I remember him growling at the way I played my tune of the month 'Childgrove' on concertina - all the notes were there, but not necessarily in the right order! However, it established a friendship between myself, Matt Green and Jeff Dando from Bampton who were 'officially' leading the session - not necessarily because of that!

We met Tubby Reynolds and Roy Dommett at Letterkenny Festival in 1979 when we were there with Carlisle rapper & Sword team and Throstles Nest womens morris team. It was on Tubby's recommendation that the Carlisle team were invited to Sidmouth in 1981.

Sad news indeed. Tubby was a legend in Letterkenny, Donegal where he somehow persuaded the bishop to allow all the kids there an extra half day off school to attend the festival which had just started (sometime in the early 70s). I remember a local telling me that, at the first festival, nothing much seemed to be happening until Tubby and his team arrived. Then things took off.

I have written about this on a number of Forums, but can't miss one more opportunity.

Tubby was a great Morris Dance leader and teacher, who with Roy Dommett helped many young dancers learn their craft. Tubby was always fun to be around, a generous man who gave much of himself to others, and it is sad to say there are too few of Tubby's ilk around anymore.
It was a pleasure to have known you.

I had a phone call today with the sad news that Tubby died peacefully in his allotment yesterday, a place he loved.

I gather that the family will be putting the arrangements together early next week and will circulate the details once they have them.
