Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: Leadfingers Date: 22 Aug 11 - 11:38 AM At getaway , the campers concert is ALWAYS oversubscribed , so they have a 'pre-booked' sytem , if you dont get your name in early then you dont get a spot ! No reason \i can see to use the same thing ar W H F F , make the list available Saturday morning and off we go ! |
Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: JennyO Date: 22 Aug 11 - 08:24 AM Yes, Richard. In fact, Rob and I arrived there quite early, and if that system had been in place, we probably would have got on. I agree it would have been a shame if we had not been treated to that wonderful Hallelujah chorus. I used to sing in a church choir many moons ago and I could really appreciate it :) I won't tell you what mine was, but it did involve switching around to different voices, and was totally unrehearsed and silly. Maybe next year ;) |
Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: Richard Atkins Date: 21 Aug 11 - 09:40 PM JennyO A valid point. I having known our Guru was to do the eye watering with laughter one. I did feel twitchy in case she was missed on the over run on time. Such a shame if those with a contributions are left out though. Name on volanteer sing list would be fine so you can prepare for your turn then and those who arrive first get their turn |
Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: skipy Date: 19 Aug 11 - 05:26 PM Hi Jenny, have taken that onboard, with a festival of over 100 fine singers we can't get you all on. Will look at ways of improving the odds as "What the folk" appears to be a fav. event for many. Same as last year for me, didn't even have time to set foot in the venue whilst it was on. Regards Skipy |
Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: JennyO Date: 19 Aug 11 - 06:35 AM Glad to hear it. It was a lot of fun! I was wondering if I could make a suggestion though about 'What the folk'? It was kinda disappointing if you had something prepared and had to wait to see if you would be picked, and then were not picked. It is obviously very popular, so I was thinking of the way they run 'Gloom Doom and Despondency' at Sidmouth. People put their names down beforehand, as for a blackboard concert, and then you know if you are going to get a turn, rather than having to wait and wonder. I think even if we had KNOWN we weren't going to get a turn, we still would have stayed to enjoy it anyway, but the uncertainty would have been taken out, making it more enjoyable. Just something to consider for next year...... Next year we hope to have more opportunities to participate in general. |
Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: skipy Date: 18 Aug 11 - 03:50 PM Looks like "what the folk" will happen every year! Skipy |
Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: My guru always said Date: 18 Aug 11 - 03:32 PM Aha, Fyldeplayer - didn't click who you were but at least I know we were in the same room. The Hallelujah Chorus was my fault I'm afraid. I'd never imagined that it would work at a Folk Festival *grin* |
Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: skipy Date: 18 Aug 11 - 09:34 AM Pity you missed the concert, we were VERY pleased with it so say the least, see you next year (17/18/19) Skipy |
Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: GUEST,Fyldeplayer Date: 18 Aug 11 - 09:14 AM A fantastic afternoon from the opening salvo of the Bell Big sing to the side splitting Hallelujah Chorus finale at What the Folk! We wear our red noses with pride - shame we had to split before eve concert. |
Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: Cats Date: 18 Aug 11 - 07:46 AM Thanks to everyone ay WHFF. you will be pleased to know my cats hadn't starved and the ones locked out were very miffed. The key had been locked in the kitchen but all is now sorted. I've now bought an outside key safe so it doesn't happen again! |
Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: Herga Kitty Date: 18 Aug 11 - 04:12 AM Skipy - I think the date thing is a blip from when the Cat was down... It seems horribly likely that WHFF will clash with Moira next year, as well as with the start of Whitby, because there will only be a one week gap between the end of Sidmouth and the start of Whitby (only 4 Mondays in August 2012). We'll probably be arriving late at Whitby next year.... Kitty |
Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: skipy Date: 17 Aug 11 - 06:29 PM How come 2 above & maybe this one dated 17th? Below ones dated 18th & not going to top of page? Skipy |

Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: My guru always said Date: 17 Aug 11 - 05:38 PM Yes, it was lovely! Am keeping my fingers crossed that next year's dates don't clash with Moira. That would be an extremely difficult decision! |
Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: Hesk Date: 18 Aug 11 - 03:15 PM Apologies, I never was any good at Maths, I spent one year thinking I was a year older than I was, came as quite a pleasant surprise when I realised my mistake! |
Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: skipy Date: 18 Aug 11 - 02:21 PM Yep, it was 25. Skipy |
Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: Herga Kitty Date: 18 Aug 11 - 02:09 PM Hesk - it was no 25, because they missed a year when Dave and Kate moved to Grove from Stanford-in-the-Vale... Kitty |
Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: Hesk Date: 18 Aug 11 - 01:51 PM Was this the best yet? Particularly the Sat evening concert. All enjoyable, but a special mention to "The Morning After", who were great all weekend. Thanks to Tony and Pearl and Kitty and Derek for hosting the singarounds, and to Dave and Kate for another great festival, 25 years, but not, I believe, No 25. A good excuse for another anniversary soon! |
Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: G-Force Date: 18 Aug 11 - 01:41 PM The Saturday afternoon tune session was pretty good, what with three Maccann duet concertinas in one session (not to mention two nyckelharpas and all the usual stuff). As always, a thoroughly enjoyable festival. Just a shame you can't be in all places at once. |
Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: Herga Kitty Date: 17 Aug 11 - 10:51 PM Now the Cat is back I can say thanks to Dave, Kate & Co for another brilliant weekend! Thanks too to all the 60 people who performed at the Friday night singaround, and to Denise for the celebratory cakes on Saturday morning. Kitty |
Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: Hovering Bob Date: 14 Aug 11 - 04:37 PM What a wonderful weekend! As good as any of the previous 24; even Magic got to meet a couple of other greyhounds. Fabulous concert on Saturday night and brilliant sing-a-rounds but, as ever, the best thing with 'Grove' is catching up with so many old friends. Looking forward to number 26! Bob H |
Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: Leadfingers Date: 14 Aug 11 - 03:52 PM An excellent weekend AGAIN !! Well done Dave and Kate |

Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: Hesk Date: 11 Aug 11 - 06:53 PM Reminder that Skipy has asked us to have something silver with us to celebrate 25 years. Finding this difficult myself, might have to resort to polishing my tankard! |

Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: Cats Date: 11 Aug 11 - 05:19 PM I have half a manor house in Cornwall and my half isn't worth £Im! there again I'm not a respectable person! |
Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: JennyO Date: 11 Aug 11 - 02:18 PM BTW, just rang The Old Farmhouse and they are already booked out for next year, with people rebooking from this year! Some might drop out but we'd have to wait and see. I think I'll start another thread, in case anyone has any other suggestions. I've already hijacked this one enough.... |
Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: JennyO Date: 11 Aug 11 - 12:59 PM Never mind - I think I've found it - thatched farmhouse in Hillside Rd, am I right? Looks lovely! (Well at least I'm keeping this thread at the top ;)) |
Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: My guru always said Date: 11 Aug 11 - 12:57 PM 2 million pound manor house? The house they've just built next door to us will be going for just under that. Prices must be different in Devon.... |
Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: JennyO Date: 11 Aug 11 - 12:45 PM Thanks for the heads up, fyldeplayer. Is that what it's called, the Old Farm House? You got any other details? I think we'd like to book soon. (Sorry for the thread drift, folks) |
Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: GUEST,Fyldeplayer Date: 11 Aug 11 - 12:43 PM JennyO I can recommend if available the Old Farm House - you can see up the it up hill from the festival bustop (thatched cottage) near the bridge, great location, good food and totally festival people staying. Only 10 mins from the front. |
Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: JennyO Date: 11 Aug 11 - 12:25 PM This reminds me of a comment made by the owner of the B&B we stayed at for Sidmouth - it was a manor house well out of Sidmouth (it was all we could get by the time we booked). We got the distinct impression that he wasn't very happy having festival goers staying there. He knew it was what we were there for, but that didn't stop him doing a spiel about how genteel Sidmouth is and how he thought it was spoilt by those ruffians who insisted on having a folk festival there. He also expected us to pay up front when we arrived, and when we asked if it would be possible to get a key in case we came back late, he said "Absolutely not. This is a 2 million pound manor house. I don't give out keys." We had to get back soon after midnight each night, otherwise we would have been locked out. One day when we went down for breakfast at 8am because Rob had a 9am workshop, he looked very put out and said he wasn't ready yet. Needless to say, we'll plan ahead a bit earlier and go somewhere else next year, where we won't be regarded with such suspicion and distain. He can give our room to someone more 'genteel' ;) |
Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: Cats Date: 11 Aug 11 - 11:56 AM Grove is a respectable festival for respectable people! Van packed... |
Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: My guru always said Date: 11 Aug 11 - 04:18 AM Can't have anything silly going on at Grove, can we? |
Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: GUEST,Fyldeplayer Date: 11 Aug 11 - 03:57 AM Hi Skipy The normal CGDA tuning is very "open" and it gives the instrument unusual voicings from both open and closed chords. The fifths tuning also makes for easy moveable chord shapes. The instrument is equally well suited to both rhythm and lead playing. Hope that helps. Plenty of string players around at W/E to assist. Perhaps nude morris dancing as forfeit, nah that would be silly! |
Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: skipy Date: 10 Aug 11 - 08:13 PM I bought a 4 string tenor guitar over 18 months ago, it is still hanging up on a wall here as Im do not have a clue how to tune it! Help, if you are going to WHFF & tune one, please show me! Skipy |
Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: skipy Date: 10 Aug 11 - 10:42 AM Make you drink Lager for the rest of the weekend! No, that is too cruel! Skipy |

Subject: RE: White Horse Folk Fest, Going? From: skipy Date: 09 Aug 11 - 06:13 PM Looking into the possibility of opening another singaround for Sat. night in RC or SH as there seems to be a need. I don't know! You lot sing all day & then want to sing all night as well! We are here to provide the facilities so lets do it, I will buy the chokies just incase. Skipy |
