Festival of Traditional Music, Eisteddfod 2011
Friday, November 4 through Sunday, November 6
A weekend of traditional folk/roots music
at the Hudson Valley Resort and Spa, 400 Granite Road, Kerhonkson, Ulster County, NY 12446

The Folk Music Society of New York, Inc. invites you to join leading singers/musicians in a weekend of traditional folk/roots music at the Hudson Valley Resort and Spa. Meet outstanding performers in 25 workshops and three concerts, plus an open mike, late night singing, a contra dance, and informal socializing, music making, and outdoor walks plus convenient hotel rooms, good food, a spa, an indoor pool, and more. The festival is ideal for the whole family, and provides a very rare chance in New York to hear such diverse, and such high quality, performers all in a single venue.

•        Featured artists include Claire Boucher, Matt Brown, Martha Burns Andy Cohen, Dennis Cook, Judy Cook, Jerry Epstein, Howard Glasser, Carl Linich, Bob Malenky, Caroline Paton, Jerron "Blind Boy" Paxton, Dave Ruch, Heather Wood, Olga Zaric, and more. For a full list and details of the performers go to www.eisteddfod-ny.org.

Participants are welcome for the day or register for the entire weekend to stay at the hotel and experience all the music. A web page has been set up with information on day and weekend rates and a booking form at www.folkfestny.org. You can also reserve online directly at: http://eisteddfod-ny.eventbrite.com.

For information go to www.folkfestny.org or call 718-672-6399

[The word "Eisteddfod" is Welsh. It connotes a gathering of poets and musicians, and there is a large Eisteddfod every year in Wales. The name was adopted by Howard Glasser, the founder of this festival, when he began these gatherings of singers and musicians four decades ago.]

Wales hosts two major annual Eisteddfodau, the National Eisteddfod, with different locations each year alternating between North and South Wales, and the International Eisteddfod, always in Llangollen, N. Wales. There are other smaller ones, and eisteddfodau are also held internationally (several in the US) to promote Welsh culture.

The NY Eisteddfod, it should be noted, has absolutely nothing to do with Welsh culture.

On the other hand, it is a fine traditionally-based folk festival, well worth supporting.

This terrific festival is now only a month away! Here is the updated list of performers:
Ralph Bodington, Claire Boucher, Matt Brown, Martha Burns, Andy Cohen, Judy & Dennis Cook, Christine Cooper, Jerry Epstein, Jean Farnworth, Alan Friend, Howard Glasser, Chris Koldewey, Carl Linich, Bob Malenky, Evy Mayer, Caroline Paton, Rob Paton, Ann Price, John Roberts, Dave Ruch, Steve Suffet, Zeliha Temren, Heather Wood, and Olga Zaric. Dave Ruch will be the dance caller. MC's are Mary Cliff and John Ziv. All ably aided by Don Wade, soundman par excellance.
This year we do have a Welsh connection in Christine Cooper, who "set out with her fiddle on her back," performed on several continents, and returned to immerse herself in the traditional music of her native Wales.
A special feature is Dave Ruch's presentation of Traditional and Historical Songs of New York State, sponsored by the NY Council for the Humanities. His banjo, guitar, mandolin, octave mandolin, bones, spoons, washboard or jaw harp, and joyful songs combine with stories and humor to captivate audiences young and old.
You will also hear the musical traditions of Georgia, Brittany, Serbia, and Turkey.
Indeed, one complaint has been that too many good workshops are presented at the same time. Another complaint is that it is hard to tear yourself away from the performances to enjoy the beautiful Shawangunk Mountains or the hotel's indoor swimming pool and spa.

Whoops, Ron Olesko's name was omitted. This folk music expert and gracious person will again serve as MC.
Say, observe the competition, which is more charming, Andy Cohen, Ron Olesko, or Caroline Paton? Or do you have your own candidates?

Greetings:

I am really looking forward to this. In addition to the music, the Hudson Valley Resort is a wonderful place to swim, take a walk, or just relax. The food is excellent and plentiful, and Marilyn enjoys getting a spa treatment or two.

In fact, the weekend after the Eisteddfod, we are returning to teHudson Valley Resort for NERFA. Maybe we should just stay in the area for the time in-between? There are lots of things to do, from leaf-peeping to apple picking to hiking to fine country dining at the Depuy Canal House in nearby High Falls.

Other pluses for this festival:

- Everyone is under the same roof encouraging lots of music, conversation and fun all day and all night.

- Registration is all-inclusive so you aren't constantly opening your wallet...except for libations.

- The program committee always finds a "treasure" to add to the festival -- a person or group you may never have heard of -- who turn out a performance you'll never forget.

See you there.

Marnie

Thanks to generous benefactors there is now a special rate for people age 21-35 who register for the festival as a group of 3 or more. They pay the reduced rate of $150 each for the weekend including the program, meals, and accommodations in a triple room --$180 if in a double room (this is actually less than we pay for the hotel alone).
There is no application for a scholarship -- they just have to sign up at this rate. But they should sign up before the weekend fills up.
Full information is available on the Eisteddfod web site: http://folkfestny.org. Please pass this information to everyone who you think can take advantage of it; friends, students, whoever.

Who will be singing/playing traditional music? You and your friends plus performers - Joy Bennett, Ralph Boddington, Claire Boucher, Matt Brown, Martha Burns, Andy Cohen, Judy & Dennis Cook, Christine Cooper, Jerry Epstein, Jean Farnworth, Alan Friend, Howard Glasser, Dave Harvey, Chris Koldewey Carl Linich, Bob Malenky, Evy Mayer, Caroline Paton, Rob Paton, Ann Price, John Roberts, Dave Ruch, Steve Suffet, Zeliha Temren, Heather Wood, Olga Zaric, and John Ziv. Description at www.folkfestny.org.
Registration for the weekend suggests some really good musicians/singers are going to be attending. Last year someone said that a small festival like this gave everyone a chance to mingle with performers and with other music enthusiasts.
