This was, as someone has pointed out, the Arthur A Penn song, 'Smiling Through'. The very best recording of this - I say this with deference to lovers of Richard Tauber - is by Jo Stafford. It can be seen on Youtube. The only problem I have with the photos that accompany it is that her smiling eyes lover is a GI, whereas the little white cot is so clearly from the British Isles. The song is beautiful and Jo's performance of it quite outstanding

There was a British movie, I think from the 40s, about a couple/family separated during WW2, with a happy ending (of course).
We saw it in the mid 50s and it was quite dated then.
But I'm sure the movie was called 'Come Smiling Through' and that song featured in it.
There were several 'feel good' war movies that we saw then and they were all named after songs and had a similar theme of love, loss and then a reunion at the end.
I remember 'Dear Little Shamrock' and 'Danny Boy' as well and the latter had a little boy (was he named Danny?) who played a piano accordion and of course, play the tune. I was so impressed, I asked my Dad for one and that's when I took up a squeeze box.

My Dad of 84 died last year and my Mum has been trying to remember their song from the 40s to put an inscription on his grave. Today she remembered enough of the lyrics for me to do a google and come up with Jim Dixon's lyrics of 'Smilin' Through'

Thanks all. Sarah2, I did a search at the Lester Levy site and found "Smilin' Through" in all it's glory - or so I thought. Sadly, there was a glitch and they displayed the sheet music for a song called "So Long Letty" instead. I have sent them a note asking for a correction. I'll post something here when they get it fixed.

Neither of those is it. Here is a summary of the lyrics as I remember them. Note that this is a collection of impressions and not the actual lyrics:

Long ago there was someone I knew who sang a song about a couple who were getting on in years. She had "eyes of blue". He, the singer, speaks of how her hair has turned gray or silver and how his has too. I think there was something in it about a garden gate as well. It sounds like a song which may have been popular in the early part of this century and sounded to me like it might be from the British Isles (I can't honestly say whether English, Irish, Scottish but it didn't sound like it was native to the USA). I would like to find the lyrics. The title as listed in the thread heading may not be correct.
