Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Eyes of Blue? / Smilin' Through (Penn) From: GUEST Date: 12 Mar 11 - 05:48 AM This was, as someone has pointed out, the Arthur A Penn song, 'Smiling Through'. The very best recording of this - I say this with deference to lovers of Richard Tauber - is by Jo Stafford. It can be seen on Youtube. The only problem I have with the photos that accompany it is that her smiling eyes lover is a GI, whereas the little white cot is so clearly from the British Isles. The song is beautiful and Jo's performance of it quite outstanding |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Eyes of Blue?? / Smilin' Through From: Little Robyn Date: 08 Jun 10 - 03:39 PM There was a British movie, I think from the 40s, about a couple/family separated during WW2, with a happy ending (of course). We saw it in the mid 50s and it was quite dated then. But I'm sure the movie was called 'Come Smiling Through' and that song featured in it. There were several 'feel good' war movies that we saw then and they were all named after songs and had a similar theme of love, loss and then a reunion at the end. I remember 'Dear Little Shamrock' and 'Danny Boy' as well and the latter had a little boy (was he named Danny?) who played a piano accordion and of course, play the tune. I was so impressed, I asked my Dad for one and that's when I took up a squeeze box. Robyn |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Eyes of Blue?? From: GUEST,Ged Date: 03 Mar 05 - 12:09 PM I'll try again Hi everyone I don't know who you are or this site- but I thank the power of the internet. My Dad of 84 died last year and my Mum has been trying to remember their song from the 40s to put an inscription on his grave. Today she remembered enough of the lyrics for me to do a google and come up with Jim Dixon's lyrics of 'Smilin' Through' Many thanks |

Subject: Lyr Add: THAT'S MY WEAKNESS NOW (Green, Stept) From: Allan C. Date: 29 Feb 04 - 10:40 AM LadyJean, we have found the song I sought; but just in case someone should look here, I will post the lyrics to the song you mentioned. It and another version of it can be found here. Transcribed from vocals by Helen Kane, recorded 7/16/1928, From Helen Kane, the Original 'Boop-Boop a-Doop' Girl: Great Original Performances 1928 - 1930; Robert Parker's Classic Years in Digital Stereo, Louisiana Red Hot Records, RPCD-323, Love, love, love, love, Look what you've done to me! The things I never missed, Are things I can't resist! Oh, love, love, love, love, Isn't it plain to see, I just had a change of heart, What can it be? He's got eyes of blue, I never cared for eyes of blue, But he's got eyes of blue, And that's my weakness now! He's got curly hair, I never cared for curly hair, But he's got curly hair, And that's my weakness now! Oh, my! Oh, me! Oh, I should be good, I would be good, But, gee! He likes to bill and coo, And I never cared to bill and coo, But he likes to bill and coo, So that's my weakness now! He likes a saxophone, I never cared for a saxophone, But he likes a saxophone, And that's my weakness now! He likes those rainy days, And I never cared for a rainy day, But he likes a rainy day, And that's my weakness now! Oh, let it rain, let it pour, 'Cause I think he knows just what it's rainin' for! He likes a long good-night, And I never had a long good-night, But he likes a long good-night, So that's my weakness now! And he likes boop-boop-a-doop, And I never cared for boop-boop-a-doop But he likes a boop-boop-a-doop, So, that's my weakness now! And he likes butt'n dutt'n da-da-da, I never cared for butt'n dutt'n da-da-da, But he likes but-dut-da-da, So, that's my weakness now! What's more, what's more, Oh, I think he knows what but-dut-da is for! And he likes boop-boop-a-doop, I never cared for a boop-boop-a-doop But he likes to boop-boop-a-doop, That's my weakness now! Ooh, that's my weakness now! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Eyes of Blue?? From: LadyJean Date: 28 Feb 04 - 11:32 PM Betty Boop sang a song that began, "He likes eyes of blue. I never cared for eyes of blue but he likes eyes of blue, so that's my weakness now." Is that any help? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Eyes of Blue?? From: Allan C. Date: 28 Feb 04 - 11:30 PM Thanks, Jim! I had totally forgotten to check back at the Levy site to see if they corrected the glitch. However, Willa found a different source for the lyrics and not only brought me a copy, but also sang it for me at last year's Yorkshire gathering. |
Subject: Lyr Add: SMILIN' THROUGH (Arthur A. Penn) From: Jim Dixon Date: 28 Feb 04 - 08:27 PM From the sheet music at The Lester S. Levy Collection of Sheet Music SMILIN' THROUGH Words and Music by Arthur A. Penn, 1918. There's a little brown road windin' over the hill To a little white cot by the sea; There's a little green gate At whose trellis I wait, While two eyes o' blue Come smilin' through At me! There's a gray lock or two in the brown of the hair, There's some silver in mine, too, I see, But in all the long years When the clouds brought their tears, Those two eyes o' blue Kept smilin' through At me! And if ever I'm left in this world all alone, I shall wait for my call patiently, For if Heaven be kind, I shall wake there to find Those two eyes o' blue Still smilin' through At me. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Eyes of Blue?? From: Allan C. Date: 18 Jan 01 - 04:40 PM Gee, now I'll never be able to sing this song with a straight face. I just got an image that perhaps the eyes of blue belonged to a goat. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Eyes of Blue?? From: GUEST,Jean Date: 18 Jan 01 - 04:30 PM Bert and Sarah2 have the words I remember my mother singing in the 30's. and yes I think Crosby sang it, perhaps in one of his films. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Eyes of Blue?? From: Allan C. Date: 15 Jan 01 - 09:28 PM Thanks all. Sarah2, I did a search at the Lester Levy site and found "Smilin' Through" in all it's glory - or so I thought. Sadly, there was a glitch and they displayed the sheet music for a song called "So Long Letty" instead. I have sent them a note asking for a correction. I'll post something here when they get it fixed. Thanks again - especially to Bert, his dad, and Sarah2 and her mum. |
Subject: Lyr Add: WHEN YOU ARE OLD AND GREY (Tom Lehrer) From: NightWing Date: 15 Jan 01 - 08:18 PM It's obviously NOT the one you're looking for, but any excuse to toss out a Lehrer tune.
WHEN YOU ARE OLD AND GREY I've also heard that last verse done: I'll never love you then at all *LOL*

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Eyes of Blue?? From: Allan C. Date: 11 Jan 01 - 12:28 PM Yep, that's the one, Bert! And we did talk about it a long time ago and you said, "I'll have to ask Dad...". But we still weren't sure we were talking about the same song. Now we are. |

And if ever I'm left in this world all alone I shall wait for my call patiently And if heaven be kind, I shall wake there to find Those two eyes of blue, still smiling through at me. Didn't we talk about this one once before Alan? Bert. (I'll have to ask Dad, I'm sure he know it) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Eyes of Blue?? From: GUEST Date: 11 Jan 01 - 11:29 AM Semms I've heard those lyrics or something similar by Foster and Allen (in Ireland). I'll see if I can some up with something. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Eyes of Blue?? From: Allan C. Date: 10 Jan 01 - 07:12 PM Neither of those is it. Here is a summary of the lyrics as I remember them. Note that this is a collection of impressions and not the actual lyrics: There's a little brown house at the top of the hill and the gate that leads to it rusted with age...the house has grown old as have you and I...your hair is now trimmed in silver and mine is gray too...yada yada yada eyes of blue. As I said, I know I don't have much to go on but I thought I'd give it another try. |
Subject: Lyr Add: GOLDEN JUBILEE From: Snuffy Date: 10 Jan 01 - 07:01 PM It's not this one, is it?
GOLDEN JUBILEE
Way down in the County Kerry, in a spot they called Tralee, Put on your old knee-breeches, your coat of emerald green,Oh, well do I remember how we danced on the village green You held me in your arms, dear Pat, and called me your cailín. Your hair was like a raven's, but now it's turning grey. Come over here, my sweetheart dear, and hear what I've to say. Chorus Well do I remember when first I was your bride, In the little chapel on the hill where we stod side by side. Of good friends we've had many, of troubles we've had few. Come over here, my sweetheart dear, and here's what you must do. Chorus Wassail! V

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Eyes of Blue?? From: Allan C. Date: 01 Oct 99 - 02:03 PM Wish I had more to go on too. I am just now remembering that the first or (maybe second) verse begins, "There's a little (brown?) house in the (something)." I know this is really vague. But I had to at least ask the question. |

Subject: Eyes of Blue?? From: Allan C. Date: 23 Sep 99 - 08:12 PM Long ago there was someone I knew who sang a song about a couple who were getting on in years. She had "eyes of blue". He, the singer, speaks of how her hair has turned gray or silver and how his has too. I think there was something in it about a garden gate as well. It sounds like a song which may have been popular in the early part of this century and sounded to me like it might be from the British Isles (I can't honestly say whether English, Irish, Scottish but it didn't sound like it was native to the USA). I would like to find the lyrics. The title as listed in the thread heading may not be correct. |
