There is always this song about about a mythical Island to the west:

It's called Tir Na Noir

The First is the original in Norwegian by the Group who wrote it and made it famous

Vamp:

These are beautiful. I don't want to wake up my house-guests (I have a house full this weekend!) but can't wait to listen to your suggestions. Thank you so much!

Try "Til ungdommen" by Nordahl Grieg. Til Ungdommen

English version performed

norwegian version performed

Nordahl Grieg was a poet and playwright who died fighting the Germans in WWII. He also wrote a poem in 1940 that is much quoted these sad days - the final lines say: "We are so few in this country, every fallen is a brother, a friend"

A great favourite of mine is the song Anna Lovinda, this link gives the lyrics in Danish (my language), with notation and guitar chords.

Here is a YouTube of Thomas Jensen singing it in Danish.

Alex Campbell (YouTube) translated it into English and sings it here.

It has a beautiful melody.

If you don't find one suitable that's specifically from Norway (which you probably will having a week in which to find it), Dona Nobis Pacem, or many others, will work as a tribute.

Checking on the 'cat I found reference to a Norwegian song - Per Spelman but when I found the words, it's about Paul's little hen who ran away from the farm and was chased by a fox. Paul tried to save her but Cluck, cluck, cluck, she cried in vain.
Not really suitable at this time.
Maybe there's something by Edvard Grieg?

I am leading a singing workshop next Saturday entitled, "Sing from the Heart". I will be teaching several chorus songs, rounds, etc. from the world over. It seems like a good thing to try to find a song from Norway. Perhaps a way to ease our own pain over the loss of a sense of security in that lovely country, and to send our loving thoughts out to all in pain and fear.

Suggestions?
