My Apple ipod suffers from screen failure. From time to time nothing appears on the screen. I cannot navigate with a blank screen and although random button pressing sometimes works it is not much use.

Is this the end or does it just need oil poured in the back?

My ipod did the same...worked sometimes if I toggled the controls between two of the buttons...check on some of the helpline sites as I can't remember which buttons it was, now. I ended up getting a new one but I still have the old one...it plays but you never know what you are getting! Will watch the thread in case some whizz can advise! Mine sometimes went to rainbow stripes...pretty but fairly useless!   :-S

TV ads in my area claim that they can "repair screens" on "anything." The particular ads are so obnoxious that they're obviously aimed at an illiterate public, but there might be something to the capabilities that they claim.

Before making a dra$tic move, it might be a good idea to take a look at some of your local advertising - especially in the "sleaze wanted" section, if your media have anything similar to this guy.

Thansk John,

we have plenty of "sleaze" in our press - most of it owned by Rupert Murdoch! I might drop into the Apple shop and see what they say. When I charge it up it often revives - but not always

I don't have an iPod - my MP3 player is a Sony Walkman, my second one. The Sonys have a little "reset" hole. You stick a pin in the hole to reset the thing. When nothing else works, a reset has always done the trick for me. Don't iPods have a similar way to do a reset?

Thanks Joe,

that rings a bell from 'Mac land' a long time ago - something about ejecting floppy discs! I cannot find an equivalent hole. If it was a phone I would take the battery and card out but that doesn't seem possible

There's a couple of ways of resetting them but my suggestion would be to make an appointment at the Genius bar in the Apple store and get them to have a look. The hole thing rings a bell but I might be thinking of CD drives or something.

They were excellent when we went up there recently with a Mac that had died (first one ever, in 25+ years of owning and working daily on Macs). The machine was knackered, but the chap removed the hard drive and told us hoe to retrieve the data, all for nowt. It's worth a try before splashing out for a new one.
