Is anyone going to Interceltic - Lorient, Brittany, France at the start of August?

Not this year. The music/ dance concerts at the football stadium were fabulous. I can't imagine how they organise them so well with groups of mostly amateur musicians - pipe bands etc. without hours of rehersals. parking is getting increasingly difficult. Few sessions the last time we went.

Lorient is simply fabulous, and the logistics are breathtaking - 800,000 punters paying to see the events, 12 days of celebrating, thousands of hungry musicians being heartily fed. Alas, I can't go to Lorient now, but the sights and sounds in the three years we were booked burn like a celtic fire in my memory!

Dan KilBride, the incoming trac Director, will be there with one of his band incarnations - not sure which one. I'll try to find out. Always happy to say hello to people.

Lorient is, indeed, amazing. So much talent packed into 12 days!

My favourites are the afternoon band concerts in the marquee at the top of the hill. Cheap as chips, and four or five cracking bands from different parts of the Celtic world taking you right through the afternoon. I like to get right to the front - a few dozen people playing pipes, bombardes and drums at twelve paces almost scalps you, but how exhilarating! :)

I won't be there this year, unfortunately, but I'll probably be back next year.

Hmm. I thought I posted an update. Where'dit go?

Anyway ... Dan says he'll be there with Yr Hwntws, an iconic Welsh band which caused a real stir in the 70s with its unique sound. It spent a couple of decades in energy-saving mode but has been a lot more active in the last few years. It's sound owes a lot to the fact that they sing in Gwenhwyseg, the Welsh dialect of the south east.

Great fun, and worth seeing in you're at Lorient.

sian

Sounds like a combination of at least three football teams...

Enjoy it anyway

I can tell you from experience that the pipe bands really do put in hours of rehearsals - first thing in the morning, right outside the bedroom windows of resting guitar players! I shall miss it this year, so best wishes to everyone going.

Steve - its the going on, being in the right place at the right time - often with other bands also in the arena - the going off- in several different languages. A bit like the Edingurgh tatoo but you know they have different bands each night.

I'm at Sandwich and Broadstairs the first 2 weeks of August - so I can't complain, but nostalga rules.
