We have all your requirements here in Newtongrange, except I wouldn't say the people are all that friendly. Some of tnem are after you've been here long enough, but it's a bit clannish.

Public transport is excellent (free for over-60s throughout Scotland). About 12 buses an hour into Edinburgh during the day, other more local services, hourly night bus service. The local folk club is not really my thing but there's everything you could want around Midlothian or in Edinburgh.

I'm a student, so I have no idea about anything, but I like being in Sheffield:

• a bungalow: Can't say
• small garden: Can't say
• FOLK CLUB/ music venues: A lot
• local shops/doctors ect.: A fair few
• public transport: We have nice public transport. The trams are all shiny!
• lovely views: I lived in Broomhill, which is 30 minutes walk from the station. And then there's a wonderful views 30 minutes cycle away. The peak district is wonderful and not far away at all
• friendly people: Well, there's some. It's that YorkshireYankee and asirovedout you need to watch out for though. You join a folk choir and within a month they grab you and throw you into a folk club and make you sing Hanging Johnny. Gits, both of them

I've lived in Plymouth, England, and still would if I could have earned a decent living there. The Devon/Cornwall peninsula is the most temperate place in Britain.
I've liven in Auckland, New Zealand, for 35 years, and there are worse places than that, too. It is sub-Tropical.
I understand Spain is the country for avid party animals.

Virgina Tams I live half way between colchester & cambridge. Visit colchester club when somebody we wish to see is there & the same with cambridge also the bluebell inn at hempstead. Used to be a member at hitchen for a few years until finances changed & have had to cut back. Prefere clubs with artists to only sessions but give most things a try.
Love Devon & Cornwall for holidays but don't know if it would be my choice permantly.
If only the music would take of a lot closer to home (tried with no success) we real have most thngs at hand, public transport would be my only concern if my husband could not drive for any reason, last bus out to town 5.20pm, last bus back 5.35pm.

I moved to North Lincolnshire last year. Property prices are very reasonable, the views are flat but big sky and great for walking. Pub prices? I pay £2.30 a pint for hand pulled Batemans, £2.50 for Jennings.

Public transport is, I am told, not so good where we are. But no matter, because they would only take you to Doncaster or Scunthorpe if we had them (!)

We're happy as pigs in poo with our decision to up sticks and move. And you know, Sheffield is still only 40 mins on the motorway away to go out and see mates, have a drink, argue over who is driving back and sampling the delights of lime and soda...

In US consider Astoria Oregon...houses used to be dirt cheap..now worse..lots and lots of empty storefronts, partially because of slum lord who will not repair or lease them I think. Conducive to starting a small but perhaps not overly profitable business. Beautiful view. About 80 miles I think from Portland. Lots of great music. Good museums. Not probably a great job market but good for retiring. Rainy damp cold windy weather most of year..oh I see that that could be a drawback for some...fabulous community radio and community in general..settled by Finnish, Norwegians, Croatians, Chinese and of course Clatsop and other Native groups. Some good restaurants. Fisher Poets every year. Good fishing...mg

Don't need ta move. Job, house, plenty of music and artsy fartsy stuff if I drive a little or take the fairly good public transportation. Few earthquakes, hurricanes, or tornadoes of much consequence. Winters are not that bad. Cost of living is not low. But once you're in the economy, it is tolerable. Lotsa nature within a short travel. Why would I leave? Unless some huge life issue compels me, I plan to retire here.

My husband says somewhere for good birdwatching & walking as this is also a hobby of ours.
Why not just move to the south of the county. Good clubs around Southend, good birding, sea wall walks and good transport.

Northern Spain was so beautiful..so many flowers etc...you crossed the border from France and steps into Spain were met with paradise as I recall..the cleanest bathrooms in all of Europe...older men going around getting any cigarette stubbs out of the way and cleaning all the time. The contrast between France and Spain, in the same railway station which was split was astounding. mg

New Hampshire or Maine. North or South Dakota. Montana, Wyoming or Idaho. Possibly Utah or Alaska. Anywhere really where the it's quiet, the air is clean and I can spend my final years fishing in peace.

SW Washington is very nice..great fishing, hiking. Job situation not great but OK in some specialties. Houses not as expensive as other areas but not dirt cheap any more. Weather is cool and rainy, and very windy and rainy by ocean. No ice to speak of or snow..a couple of days a year maybe. mg

Started this thread back last July & didn't think we would move for at least 2 years but things change & we have made an offer on a property in Thetford, nice position for town & walking (just need to sell our place). We know Bury St Edmunds well & will be able to attend the Milkmaid Folk Club more often as well as the Apex theater, nayone tell us of any other music in the area?
Ely Festival will be that much closer if we wish to go.

We have no close neighbors. The house is in good shape, warm and cozy, on a side road, 3 miles from the Maine Mall, one mile from the grocery store, Post office and fire dept.
Our back yard has upwards of 20 wild turkeys, Deer, a Possum, three Raccoons and 4 Foxes. I wonder if I can claim them as dependents?

Don't come here. (Londonderry NH) We have a bit of folk music, but they charge an arm and a leg. A short round trip taxi ride will run you about twenty bucks.

Interesting to read these responses. Based on each person's criteria, I can see major advantages to many locations to relocate, but how good would a move to Alaska be if you are not used to extreme weather? what about moving to Cuba if you have grandchildren in Scotland? Hw would that be? I think Croatia or Slovenia, but that is just thinking from the romantic side of my brain. What If I have a really wonderful home in Romania, extreme beauty, bucolic living conditions, but I need a good surgeon for a disc operation. The fact is, you probably need to find the best overall blend for you personally. I am living on a farm in north Georgia, and over all, I am happy here. Would I like more music? why sure! What about shopping, proximity to the ocean, the cities, culture, etc. Sure, there are better locations for these, but hey, life is a series of compromises. The old saying, "the grass is greener..." seems to be apropos here.

No royalty
No brown bread
Great lifestyle - like England in the 60's
Friendly people
Warmer, drier weather
No road tax
Superb wine and food
Respect for the individual
No Murdoch
Architecture, history and culture
Cinemas prefered to cinema
Respect for intellectuals rather than celebrities
Downsides:
I'm hopeless at the language
They drive on the wrong side but the roads are empty
No English beer
No double cream - come on someone import it: chefs love it!

Somewhere in North Devon. Ease of access too motorway to take you anywhere North, South, East or West. In reach of small town or bigger if you so wish. On route to Cornwall. Attraction! Beautifal countryside lovely quiet villages. In short distance of some of the finest festivals in Britain. Sidmouth, Dartmoor, etc. Pennymoor singarounds. Pennymoor song and ale and Bamptom After the fair event, with its links to Brittany and Ireland. The people involved are the best I have met anywhere. English Irish and Bretons. Pity I cannot get my wife to move.

France seems to me to be a society built on facades and pretension. I'm also very surprised to see "respect for the individual" touted as one of its virtues. Surely the citizen is more the vassal of the state there than here - although I support its stance as being a secular society.
