OK, I did it! At Clearwater's Revival I took part in two sets and did not make too much of a fool of myself on the concertina. The first time I've played concertina in public since last July.

Unfortunately, it is looking increasingly likely that the right rotator cuff is next on the agenda.

Yeah, Kat! One of the most challenging things about this process was figuring out how to turn the ignition key without pain. The surgery limited wrist rotation and made it difficult. I now have two techniques which work.

Thank you. I am being very cautious about it. I had it once in a shoulder and it hurt like heck and didn't do much good. The hand therapist said, though, in the thumb there is just the one tendon and the results are usually pretty good using cortisone. I am not in any rush. Still doing the exercises and using a cloth splint to keep it from locking.

Be careful with cortisone. I used it for tennis elbow many years ago. Each shot was less effective and more painful.

That's great! I am about ready to go back to the hand doc and try some cortisone for my thumb tendon...I've got trigger thumb...how dumb does that sound?!**bg** Still need to do something with my left index finger. The end acts as if it's been fused into a bent position, no arthritis or anything; just aggro on the tendons. Hard to fiddle, etc.

Keep playing and letting us know how it's going. You are an inspiration!

It looks as though I've got the keyboard position about right for two handed typing.

I refuse to be disabled. Somewhat l

Good to hear of your progression. That thumb is a pretty handy thing, isn't it? I still wear a cloth open-ended "sock" on my right one, for now, as the tendons are in tough shape. It keeps me from bending it incorrectly which can cause extreme and immediate pain! BUT therapy is helping AND using a voice recognition program to type. (Ya gotta birthday coming up or something so you can ask for it as a pressie?)

Good luck with the rest of your recovery!

kat

Yeah, the cast came off yesterday. The pins are out. Two weeks with a splint and I hope to be able to keep the wristy unsupported.

When the cast came off, the first thing I did was gently scratch--what a luxury.

One thing I had not counted on was how much the loss of wrist flex changes the way the right hand moves. I now have to learn new postures so I can type two handed again.

The past 5 months have given me great respect for the theory that the opposable thumb was a major step in the development of homo sap.

Very definitely limited wrist flexion due to the fusion and the joint looks quite ugly.

As they say in Maine, it feels some bettah, though.

Bad news-Good news. Yesterday, I was suddenly in pain where the pins enter the wrist. Called the doc this AM. He told me to come right in. After removing the cast, it was obvious that something bad was going on. Dr. Rick examined the area and prescribed an antibiotic. The new cast still fits into my jacket. It's nice to deal with a doc who gives a damn, but I've been lucky that way.

That is good news! As to the itching, when my kids had chickenpox, I set the hair blow dryer on cool and aimed it at the itching. It seemed to help a bit. If you can get to any of the itchy bits, a little dab of witch hazel on a cotton ball will help relieve it to.

If you don't mind spending a little bit of money, there are some incredible products available at www.amerigel.com which relieve itching and greatly speed the healing process. From past experience, I can attest to it being worth every penny.

Anyway, good for you and thanks for letting us know,

kat

The worst is actually the itching.
When the old cast came off, there were large flakes of dead skin all about. Lady Hillary and I insisted on a thorough wash and scrub before the new cast went on. It still itches.

Old cast is off. X-rays show fusion is occuring. I got to flex my arm for the first time in 8 weeks. That hurts. The arm has been idle since the surgery and objected to being worked. The pain is almost gone, though. I can use the right hand a little and the new, shorter cast lets me use the hand a little. I even steered the car a little with the hand on the way home.

The new cast is fiberglass, lighter and, despite the padding, actually fits inside a sleeve. Just in time for the cold weather. The downside is that it extends above my elbow so it's inflexible.

The doc pulled the initial cast today. So far, there has been almost no pain or discomfort since this more recent surgery. He states that the healing is much more satisfactory that the previous round. The sutures are out but the [4] pins are still in place. Next visit in 4 wweks, after Thanksgiving.

We got home yesterday afternoon. Even though we had agreed on a local, there was enough pain that the doctor went to a general. Although there is still some residual numbness and there are now pins in the hand and the wrist, there is already less pain than there was at this point last time. I believe that is a good sign.

Healing time for this surgery can be expected to be about three months. The initial cast comes off in a week or so and then will go to a lighter one.

OK, last Fri, I went in for pre-op testing for the surgery on the 20th.

Monday night, I got a call from the hospital that I had to get medically cleared by my primary physician. Fortunately, I had an appointment with him today.

I also asked that the tests that they had done on Friday be forwarded to my guy.

When I got there, the data had still not arrived. It took 3 hours of calling and irritation to get it sent.

The question, of course, is: Why did I have to waste Friday to get the testing done in order to have my doctor do the thinking for these drones?

My wrist guy goes in Thursday to do the fusion.

More later.

I hate good news-bad news situations.

Good news: I'm healing well.

Bad news: One of the bones shifted and the doc has to go back in and fuse it to another. I will lose some flex in the wrist and have to start the recovery process all over again. Lady Hillary continues the privilege of dressing me until I can regain use of the hand. No concertina playing for a few more months.

Ok, saw the doc today. He pulled the pins and removed the sutures. It already hurts less and I can move the wrist a little. Also, when the sports car hits a bump, it's not excruciating, just enough to remind me a little that it's sore.
Now, I begin the pre-rehab work by gently flexing and making a fist.
Wow, was the area around the pins ugly!

Not too bad but you should see the size of those pins--all the way across the wrist. No wonder it hirts if I move less than perfectly or try to flex the wrist, even by accident.

Went to the doctor for followup this week. If all goes well, I return in two weeks to have the pins and sutures removed. Then begins the rehab.

Last week, had a scary event. I had reached the point of being able to dress and buckle my belt. On Wed, I began having major pain in the entire forearm, radiating from the wrist as far as the lateral bicep. Dr. Rick instructed me to bedrest with the arm elevated. It worked. Not only did the pain ease, the edema in my calves and feet reduced.

Saw the doc on Tues for followup. He examined everything, said I was doing well and rewrapped the arm. I am still not allowed to get the arm wet until Aug 30.

Oi, my arm itches.

With any luck, the pins come out then--if we can get close enough to my unwashed arm without special breathing gear.

Ebarnacle, all good wishes for the best outcome..no pain! I have been going to a hand therapist for very painful tendinitis in my index fingers which started in Feb. We didn't actually know for sure what it was until about a month ago. Thankfully xrays did not show any arthritis or displacements as you have, but I can sort of imagine the pain you must be having. This is bad enough without the added problems you have. My sympathies!

Good luck with your treatment, my wife has just had a TVT where the womb and (very unusually I gather from the consultant) the bladder is shifted back to where it should be and "taped" into place. Nothing was the "norm" and so she has to stay in hospital for a further night until her waterworks passes more than it retains!!

Thank you all. What I had thought was either a severe tendinitis or a chipped bone is actually a displacement which caused both a pinched nerve and bone rubbing on bone [very painful]. I have been limiting my playing in hopes of improving the situation but as soon as the doc pointed the displacement out to me it was obvious why surgery was necessary.

Here goes, he said, holding his nose and jumping into the pool.

Last year, I took a fall onto a concrete surface. My rotator cuff took more damage. The forearm was painful with severe tendenitis which finally went away after six months. The wrist is still painful when I apply pressure and I finally gave up and saw my hand specialist. We took x-rays. I turns out that I had blown a tendon in my wrist and have to have one moved to pull everything back into line. With any luck, I will be back out of pain by September.
