As often recommended when carrying out CPR on people whose hearts have stopped - like me last December, but I wasn't really there at the time, so I don't know if they used it. I like to think they did.

You've got the chorus Les, but the 2 verses aren't there. The tune for the verse is in a different key - F I think, if you are doing the chorus in G as written.

It's been taken up by punk rockers, who get verse just slightly but significantly wrong. But you can hear the original version by Mandy Miller on You Tube.

I'd just like to say that my band plays it on the walk-through if I use the "Elephant Promenade" manoeuvre in the Cumberland Square Eight.
We did a posh wedding years ago and I swear I saw Peter Stringfellow and Edwina Currie doing it ( ok, it wasn't THAT posh ! ) .

You only have the chorus there. If you're playing it in G, the verse is in G minor and it goes into G major for the chorus. Sorry I can't write it out in the above form, I'm strictly dots..

The original was produced by George Martin.

There's a very different YouTube version here (click)

TheBigPinkLad posted a shortened version of the lyrics in 2004 in this message.

I found longer lyrics at one of "those" lyrics sites:

NELLIE THE ELEPHANT

To Bombay a travellin' circus came
They brought an intelligent elephant
And Nellie was her name
One dark night she slipped her iron chain
And off she ran to Hindustan
And was never seen again
Ooooooooooh...

Refrain:

Nellie the elephant packed her trunk
And said goodbye to the circus
Off she rode with a trumpety trump
Trump trump trump
Nellie the elephant packed her trunk
And trundled off to the jungle
Off she rode with a trumpety trump
Trump trump trump

Night by night she danced to the circus band
When Nellie was leading the big parade
She looked so proud and grand
No more tricks for Nellie to perform
They taught her how to take a bow
And she took the crowd by storm
Oooooooooh...

Refrain:

Nellie the elephant packed her trunk
And said goodbye to the circus
Off she rode with a trumpety trump
Trump trump trump
Nellie the elephant packed her trunk
And trundled off to the jungle
Off she rode with a trumpety trump
Trump trump trump

Nellie the elephant packed her trunk
And said goodbye to the circus
Off she rode with a trumpety trump
Trump trump trump
Nellie the elephant packed her trunk
And trundled off to the jungle
Off she rode with a trumpety trump
Trump trump trump

The head of the heard was calling far far away
They met one night in silver light
On the road to Mandalay
Oooooooooooooooooooh...

Refrain:

Nellie the elephant packed her trunk
And said goodbye to the circus
Off she rode with a trumpety trump
Trump trump trump
Nellie the elephant packed her trunk
And trundled off to the jungle
Off she rode with a trumpety trump
Trump trump trump

Oans, zwoa,
Oans, zwoa, drei, vier...

Nellie the elephant packed her trunk
And said goodbye to the circus
Off she rode with a trumpety trump
Trump trump trump
Nellie the elephant packed her trunk
And trundled off to the jungle
Off she rode with a trumpety trump
Trump trump trump

I'd just like to say that my band plays it on the walk-through if I use the "Elephant Promenade" manoeuvre in the Cumberland Square Eight.

When i was with Conwy (morris), it was part of a set of three tunes to what I think was a North Western set for a dance I think they called "The Banks".

The set of tunes they used were. Blaydon Races, The man that broke the bank at Monte Carlo then Nellie.

(I never got all the notes to the set on my melodeon btw)
