I have been in Leamington Spa (the town) and remember a pretty, peaceful place (at least where I was!). I will picture Sassy there, walking down the High street and window shopping, maybe stopping for some curry, as my daughter and I did 5 years ago! She can and will be able to do such things, as time goes by, I'm sure! |

Subject: RE: from Frug: keep singing but read this for update From: GUEST,Frug Date: 01 Oct 11 - 07:22 PM Update........ Sassy has now been moved back to the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch as she is now well on the road to recovery. This is a short term arrangement as she has been accepted for rehab in Leamington Spa, one of the best facilities in the country and is waiting for a vacancy. She is relaxed and happy and her progress has continued to astound. The assessing consultant is confident of "a most significant physical recovery" Her short term memory is a bit dodgy she has elements of confusion and some interesting and amusing flights of fantasy. When assessed for the rehab place, on being told that they felt she was an ideal candidate she asked "does that mean I've got the job"? The unphased consultant responded by saying "well lets give it 3 months and then we can talk about your employment options" More updates as we progress. We are hoping she will be home by Christmas. Bits of confusion here and there but overall an exceptional recovery is on the cards. Drain out now for 7 days no apparent adverse effects. Trachy out for 2 days...coping well. Started soft food and drink ad lib.Sitting out of bed on occasions, Physical strength on LHS apparent and developing. Subject: RE: from Frug: keep singing but read this for update From: catspaw49 Date: 30 Aug 11 - 11:36 PM Frank, in the plus two months I spent in the hospital last winter, about a month of it was fighting infections and it seemed so endless........Just wanted to say that Sassy might hit a point where she honestly wonders if it will ever end and that brings on some serious depression and a feeling of what the hell. Just watch for that a bit and let her know that she just has to keep fighting (and I'm sure she knows that) and that you know this fool who will guarantee it! LOL.....Anyway, hang in and know that this bunch around here are pumping out whatever vibes and dreams and thoughts and prayers we have. Spaw |
Subject: RE: from Frug: keep singing but read this for update From: katlaughing Date: 30 Aug 11 - 11:07 PM Hmmm...sounds as though she needs a good dream of cool soothing water, again...this time to let go of the frustration and anger unless they are part of her motivation.:-) One thing I had to learn spending five months in bed, most of the time, waiting for a new heart valve..patience...nothing was going to be rushed and it all came round in what I call "divine" time. Not the same, I know, as she is going through, but maybe a helpful distraction? Regardless, my good thoughts and thanks givings for continued and rapid improvement. May the divine spark in each cell of her body shine their light and banish all the interlopers. ATB, kat |

(a bit of doggerel) From: Megan L Date: 28 Aug 11 - 10:57 AM Chantey Lass your comment reminded me of a neighbour when i was a child he didnt drink often but when he did that was how he made his way home 6 steps forward two steps back a little waltz then back on track but he always made it home. Thinking of you and yours frug wrote this bit of doggerel Haul the oar Keep hauling at your oar me lads Keep hauling at the oar For you never know which pull it is Will get us safe to shore. We cannot see the strand me lads When the fog is all around We just have to keep pulling Till we reach solid ground. Tomorrow's just a dream me lads And yesterday's long gone So haul upon the oars me lads And keep on moving on. By the second or the minute By the hour or by the day Keep going to the quayside My lads just haul away. And when we've reached the harbour And the joys of life hold sway We'll smile and remember how we made it Because we hauled away. MHTBL |

Subject: RE: from Frug: keep singing but read this for update From: Frug Date: 27 Aug 11 - 07:42 AM Brief update..... Setback.. unfortunately after the removal of the brain drain Sassys brain pressure began to rise and she started to lose some of the function she had regained. A new drain has been inserted and pressures are returning to more acceptable levels, however she has slipped back a bit. Notwithstanding this we are assured that she will achieve the same equilibrium she had a few days ago and be able to progress from there. Our biggest concern now are the infections one of which has been identified as MRSA, notoriously difficult to treat and she is yet again in a big battle. The consultants are still confident of a significant recovery if we can overcome the infections.....We fight on....... On a lighter note the doctors and consultants appear so young. It is difficult after a consultation not to pat them on the head and say "thanks son, hope the exams go well" Frank and boys |

Subject: RE: from Frug: keep singing but read this for update From: Frug Date: 20 Aug 11 - 10:04 PM Update......last one for a while folks. Sassy has now been moved to a specialist ward to assist with her recovery. Whilst there are still issues to be addressed and a long and difficult journey ahead we are positive that she now not only will survive but her recovery will be good. What that means in real terms we don't know............if you measure this against what we faced 3 weeks ago we will take it. Sassy is intellectually sound and there is plenty of evidence to suggest that she will continue to improve. There is a strong medical plan in place and we have confidence that it will generate the results. We are touched and humbled by the expressions of support and love from across the world.............THANK YOU......thank you Mudcatters for allowing me this forum and the songs and prayers that have contributed to this remarkable but traumatic experience.Tonight my sons played a show demonstrating their talents in their uniquely different styles and then came together to duet on a version of Come What May from Moulin Rouge, a tribute to their mom. I post the words below for those not familiar with it........sniff sniff Frank xx |

Subject: RE: from Frug: keep singing but read this for update From: Frug Date: 19 Aug 11 - 06:33 PM Update...Sassy had a tracheotomy yesterday(18th) and came off sedation. Last night she was communicative(without talking)but animated and moving. She did not sleep much last night and this morning she was again animated and communicating. Unfortunately throughout the day her temperature started to climb......not as high as last week (which was alarming) but sufficient to cause some concern. There is some evidence of an infection in the brain fluid and they are now considering options. In a series of intellectual functioning tests today, Sassy performed well and the indicators were more than encouraging . ....physically she also performed well demonstrating strong right hand side movement and coordination and also good potential on the left, sluggish but capable of development. An up and down day!! Sassy is very scared and we have put a lot into reassuring her about her progress and strength...............so difficult to do when you are shit scared yourself. My lady fights on. I know we are receiving all sorts of support...My son's Muslim friends have a prayer cycle going in the Liverpool and Manchester areas. My Sikh friends in Birmingham and the Black Country similarly. We have had messages of support and prayer from our friends who follow Christianity and Judaism......whilst we are not religious ourselves we are deeply touched by the intense expressions of support we are receiving from faith groups and those like ourselves who believe in personal strength and spirit. Bring it all on folks. Frank, Sam and Dom xx |

A number of deadlines have come and passed in respect of potential responses including tracheotomy which we expected to happen 3 days ago but has been deferred as the medics search for the most appropriate response. This is a very scary and stressful time. Subject: RE: from Frug: keep singing but read this for update From: Frug Date: 11 Aug 11 - 05:51 PM Hello Catters........sorry for the long wait for a Sassy update but life as you can imagine has been volatile. Sassy progressed vey quickly for the first couple of days and then became beset with a very high temperature. Various attempts at controlling it were unsuccessful and as there was a risk of fitting/seizures, they eventually hit her with massive doses of broad spectrum antibiotics. To an extent these worked and the temp. reduced. Sassy became more herself, and personality started to out. She was asking for food, particularly Greek salad and demanded her breakfast.....however sill on naso-gastric nutrition. Many many positives......unfortunately she then experienced an anaphylactic reaction to one of the antibiotics and has inflamed airways. Consequently she has been sedated and reitubated and treated with steroids. She has been under sedation for 48 hrs and will be so for another 36-48 hrs. Her temperature and blood pressure are normalish without specific medication, she is physically strong and there has been no deterioration in her neuro condition. We remain optimistic that not only will she recover, but it will be a substantial if not total recovery. She has astounded the medics so far and knowing my girl she has more to come. There is a side issue. Sassys mom Polly passed away over the weekend. This was not a surprise as she has been suffering with vascular dementia for nearly 10 years following a stroke and we have nearly lost her on several occasions. Polly was in an intensive nursing home 5 miles from where we live and Sassy had reduced her hours at work and was spending up to 12 hours per day with Polly. Sassys sister Helen who lives in Scotland was coming down every other week and they shared the visiting care. Thankfully Helen was here when Sassy's illness/accident occured so was able to help me and the boys and to continue to support Polly on her inevitable journey. Whilst mourning my ma-in law with whom I had a marvellous relationship, I and the rest of the family am grateful that she is now at peace. The fact that Polly lasted so long is a testament to the strong will and determination to live of the family. This can only bode well for my Sassy, . Once again thank you for your thoughts prayers, and songs. We are very battered, tired but wholly optimistic for a good outcome. I shall try to updated again soon. Thank you Frank, Sassy, Sam, Dom xx |

Subject: RE: from Frug: keep singing but read this for update From: Frug Date: 04 Aug 11 - 05:38 PM Brief update.... Much improved tonight. Temperature under control, blood pressure normalish. Awake for some of the time. Alert, cognisant, responsive, trying to talk but inhibited by a few tubes. Now able to turn head through 180. More signs of movement including on left hand side which was a concern, noticed today large swelling on left elbow.... so might explain a bit. Scan and test results show no obvious weakness in blood vessels in brain, so overall cause still a mystery. Encouraging signs but long way to go. Next 10 days will allow clot to dissipate, so emphasis is on allowing rest and care to facilitate healing.....need for further intervention not certain. Thank you for continued support. Will post further updates but less frequently as we are in a waiting period. But will report my ladies achievements where they are significant. Mudcat and Mudcatters are great.............OFFICIAL ! Subject: RE: from Frug: keep singing but read this for update From: Frug Date: 03 Aug 11 - 07:03 PM Update.... 3 Problems identified and now being addressed. Chest infection probably due to tubes, Urinary tract infection probably due to catheter and ...... a blockage in the brain drain. Now for the good one...As a family we have always found it difficult to stay the fuck out of it...we're very hands on. Hence when we started our chill treatment using fans, misters and flannels we were asked(very politely) not to spray her bed clothes etc (we thought it a good idea as it prolonged the cooling effect) We also brought in a load of gel cooling strips and plastered them all over. We clearly had an impact but had to stop the clothes soaking.....tonights treatment precribed by the head honcho...wrapped in soaked sheets with industrial sized fans blowing over her. Quote the head honcho "its all a matter of scale" She is now much more comfortable and resting peacefully with the issues addressed. Her life hangs in the balance.....50:50 at best, there has been no neurological deterioration and physical responses better than anticipated. As a family we are united in effort. My 2 lovely boys have been staunch. Dom was flakey yesterday we carried him, Sam and I both flakey today...we got carried. I have read and re-read the posts and messages. I can't describe their impact on me.....worried about fucking the laptop with tears. Amazing what you guys intuit....Kat, Sassy is a mermaid if she sees water she has to get in it. We went to the folk festival at Skegness, there was 4 inches of snow on the ground but she had to have a paddle. I don;t know what will happen, but I know my girl will give it her all. Subject: RE: from Frug: keep singing but read this for update From: katlaughing Date: 03 Aug 11 - 05:34 PM I shall envision Sarah feeling cool and at peace, awash in the calm waters of a favourite place with a soft, cool breeze to help. I shall also envision a myriad of good cells, fighting back and protecting her from any infectious interlopers. I shall sing several songs which come to mind with those elements in them. May Sarah recover, fully, and be free of pain, strife, and fear. May you all feel the great power of us united with you in bringing all good things to bear. So mote it be! kat |

Subject: RE: from Frug: keep singing but read this for update From: Frug Date: 03 Aug 11 - 07:35 AM Brief update. Firstly thanks to Joe who amended the thread title. It's much more appropriate and reflects our positive mental attitude. Sassy (Sarahs pet name) was very quiet yesterday (Tuesday) Very high temperature and also had diagnostic scan and chest X rays. We used our alloted visiting time to cool her down with hand held fans, perfume misters and flannels.............By the time we left her temperature was down by a degree and a half... We are the chill factor !! Seeing the consultant today to get the results of the invesigations and will update later this evening or tomorrow. Our love, respect and thanks pour back to you all for the support and thoughts. Thanks to all for the PMs of support and Pat I know the spirit you talk about.... powerful stuff!! Frank (Tearful but for good reasons) |

Subject: RE: Obit: keep singing but read this for update From: Jeri Date: 02 Aug 11 - 04:39 PM For the record, the sadness of which I spoke was related to my reaction to bad news threads, not my general mental state. Subject: RE: Obit: keep singing but read this for updat From: Frug Date: 02 Aug 11 - 10:40 AM Brief update...........Sarah now out of Intensive Care. On observation ward, lucid, responsive and communicative. Talking is difficult due to period of intubation, swollen tongue, and not yet able to take fluids orally, but she can talk, she can see (difficult as she has 2 semi closed black eyes) and she can hear. Physically her right side appears strong, problems on the left but very early days. We have been told that the residual blood clot will dissipate either naturally or with a clot buster. Scan today to ascertain whether she had an incident which produced a fall or just fell and the head trauma caused the bleed. Very high temperature this morning being investigated. A bit up and down but mainly up. Yesterday when nurses were preparing her bed bath they turned round to find her cleaning her teeth. What a difference 48 hours makes!! Still scary stuff......Thanks for the support from everyone keep singing and we are most grateful.....we feel well loved! Frank, Sam and Dom and of course the star of the show Sarah xxx |

Frug, you are clearly a loving, intelligent man with a lot to cope with right now. Know that the singing goes on, for you as well as for Sarah and Sam and Dom and Helen, too. I was singing "Let the life I lead speak for me" but now I'm adding "I'm gonna lift my brother up" "The storm is passing over" Probably lots of other songs, too! |

Subject: Obit: keep singing but read this for updat From: Frug Date: 01 Aug 11 - 06:06 AM At 10.00 last night I returned to the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch, Worcestershire UK, with my 2 boys Sam and Dom and My sister in law Helen. We were there to switch off the machines supporting my lovely wife Sarah who had undergone a "catastrophic" brain haemorrhage with less than 5% chance of surviving. An arduous process involving the organ donation team and the transplant team required a number of physical and mental functioning tests and involving the coroners dept. On arrival we were greeted with a summons to see the consultant to be informed that Sarah had undergone the tests and had shown physical functionalty on both the left and right sides and a degree of instructed response. As a result of this the original prognosis was called into question and further tests and scan performed. At 12.30am we were told that based on the presenting evidence the initial diagnosis was no longer valid and at 12.30 am she was transferred to the Neurological CCU at the Queen Elizabeth hospital in Birmingham where we agreed to a brain drain. This took place at 5.30 am. Returning to the ward at 7.00 am it was noted that Sarah was now showing more capacity and even trying to wake up. By 8.00am she was awake briefly but clearly understanding where she was and its purpose. By 10.00 she was breathing unaided and the intubation was removed. Throughout the day she continued her improvement and by the time we left last evening were comforted by the improvement in her condition. We have agreed with her medical team to restrict our visiting, their point being "you want to see her awake and responding, whilst we want to see her asleep and healing" Her survival is still in the balance but the signs are very good, there are very great risks ahead and her recovery will be slow and long.We have been told that there is likely to be some impairment but the scale and nature of that is uncertain. In a period of 30 hours we have gone from desolation to elation and we feel emotionally battered. We are trying to be realistic because of the extremely dangerous condition she remains in...........we have been inundated with messages of support and offers of help. At the hospital yesterday every one who arrived to support us brought a picnic....thank you.....we don't need to shop until Christmas (2013). Please keep singing catters......its working and thank you all for your messages of support. I will try and update as and when. Love and Peace Frank, Sam and Dom (and of course Sarah !!)
