Subject: Obit: keep singing but read this for updat From: Frug Date: 01 Aug 11 - 06:06 AM At 10.00 last night I returned to the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch, Worcestershire UK, with my 2 boys Sam and Dom and My sister in law Helen. We were there to switch off the machines supporting my lovely wife Sarah who had undergone a "catastrophic" brain haemorrhage with less than 5% chance of surviving. An arduous process involving the organ donation team and the transplant team required a number of physical and mental functioning tests and involving the coroners dept. On arrival we were greeted with a summons to see the consultant to be informed that Sarah had undergone the tests and had shown physical functionalty on both the left and right sides and a degree of instructed response. As a result of this the original prognosis was called into question and further tests and scan performed. At 12.30am we were told that based on the presenting evidence the initial diagnosis was no longer valid and at 12.30 am she was transferred to the Neurological CCU at the Queen Elizabeth hospital in Birmingham where we agreed to a brain drain. This took place at 5.30 am. Returning to the ward at 7.00 am it was noted that Sarah was now showing more capacity and even trying to wake up. By 8.00am she was awake briefly but clearly understanding where she was and its purpose. By 10.00 she was breathing unaided and the intubation was removed. Throughout the day she continued her improvement and by the time we left last evening were comforted by the improvement in her condition. We have agreed with her medical team to restrict our visiting, their point being "you want to see her awake and responding, whilst we want to see her asleep and healing" Her survival is still in the balance but the signs are very good, there are very great risks ahead and her recovery will be slow and long.We have been told that there is likely to be some impairment but the scale and nature of that is uncertain. In a period of 30 hours we have gone from desolation to elation and we feel emotionally battered. We are trying to be realistic because of the extremely dangerous condition she remains in...........we have been inundated with messages of support and offers of help. At the hospital yesterday every one who arrived to support us brought a picnic....thank you.....we don't need to shop until Christmas (2013). Please keep singing catters......its working and thank you all for your messages of support. I will try and update as and when. Love and Peace Frank, Sam and Dom (and of course Sarah !!) Frug, you are clearly a loving, intelligent man with a lot to cope with right now. Know that the singing goes on, for you as well as for Sarah and Sam and Dom and Helen, too. I was singing "Let the life I lead speak for me" but now I'm adding "I'm gonna lift my brother up" "The storm is passing over" Probably lots of other songs, too! |

Subject: RE: Obit: keep singing but read this for updat From: Frug Date: 02 Aug 11 - 10:40 AM Brief update...........Sarah now out of Intensive Care. On observation ward, lucid, responsive and communicative. Talking is difficult due to period of intubation, swollen tongue, and not yet able to take fluids orally, but she can talk, she can see (difficult as she has 2 semi closed black eyes) and she can hear. Physically her right side appears strong, problems on the left but very early days. We have been told that the residual blood clot will dissipate either naturally or with a clot buster. Scan today to ascertain whether she had an incident which produced a fall or just fell and the head trauma caused the bleed. Very high temperature this morning being investigated. A bit up and down but mainly up. Yesterday when nurses were preparing her bed bath they turned round to find her cleaning her teeth. What a difference 48 hours makes!! Still scary stuff......Thanks for the support from everyone keep singing and we are most grateful.....we feel well loved! Frank, Sam and Dom and of course the star of the show Sarah xxx |

I shall continue to sing and give thanks for a complete recovery. This, or something better, for the highest good of all concerned. I am sure hearing you and your sons singing to her helped bring her back. It worked with my mom many years ago when she was not expected to survive. Music and love have powerful properties.:-) ATB, kat |

Subject: RE: Obit: keep singing but read this for update From: Jeri Date: 02 Aug 11 - 04:39 PM For the record, the sadness of which I spoke was related to my reaction to bad news threads, not my general mental state. Subject: RE: from Frug: keep singing but read this for update From: Frug Date: 03 Aug 11 - 07:35 AM Brief update. Firstly thanks to Joe who amended the thread title. It's much more appropriate and reflects our positive mental attitude. Sassy (Sarahs pet name) was very quiet yesterday (Tuesday) Very high temperature and also had diagnostic scan and chest X rays. We used our alloted visiting time to cool her down with hand held fans, perfume misters and flannels.............By the time we left her temperature was down by a degree and a half... We are the chill factor !! Seeing the consultant today to get the results of the invesigations and will update later this evening or tomorrow. Our love, respect and thanks pour back to you all for the support and thoughts. Thanks to all for the PMs of support and Pat I know the spirit you talk about.... powerful stuff!! Frank (Tearful but for good reasons) |
