From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 03 Aug 11 - 12:13 PM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YsxcURb2-Gc&feature=related Ledbetter playing simple dance music on the accordion and singing along. This is in clear violation of the Red Queen's dictum: "Be what you seem to be." |
Subject: RE: What have you people DONE to me?!? From: Will Fly Date: 03 Aug 11 - 06:15 AM One of the first blues recordings I ever heard - over 50 years ago - was "Grasshoppers In My Pillow" - and I was hooked. And it hooks me still today. |

Subject: RE: What have you people DONE to me?!? From: Big Al Whittle Date: 02 Aug 11 - 10:05 PM Risky business - didn't he stab a bartender? Treat yourself to the dvd dissecting Leadbelly's guitar style. After less than ten minutes - you will be forced to admit that here was a man who devoted all his power , all his intellect, all his skill into his art. And he had a lot of enforced empty hours to fill - a quite unnatural amount. Theres a sort of intensity about his best work that crosses the border into genius. The accordion stuff has never struck me that way. |
Subject: RE: What have you people DONE to me?!? From: katlaughing Date: 02 Aug 11 - 06:23 PM This reminds me of the bumper sticker of a lady who is 101 years old and still drives her 1930 Packard:Old Age and Treachery will overcome youth and skill! She is a hoot in the video, can still change the oil and spark plugs and has some words to say about the cars of today. |
Subject: RE: What have you people DONE to me?!? From: Mrrzy Date: 02 Aug 11 - 06:13 PM I've said it before but not in a while... my dad was, for a while, Leadbelly's bartender. |
Subject: RE: What have you people DONE to me?!? From: Big Ballad Singer Date: 02 Aug 11 - 06:06 PM olddude, you just made me practically snort lemon-flavored ice water out my nose! Don't know where you got the 'fine musician' part from, though... ;) |
Subject: RE: What have you people DONE to me?!? From: olddude Date: 02 Aug 11 - 10:34 AM I have never known you to be anything but a gentleman, a fine musician and a very good person so you still have lots to learn .... :-) |
Subject: RE: What have you people DONE to me?!? From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 02 Aug 11 - 10:17 AM "I'm supposed to be a shallow, narrow-minded bigot..." BBS, you have discovered one of the joys of the free world. You don't have to be what others SUPPOSE you to be. |
Subject: RE: What have you people DONE to me?!? From: Jeri Date: 01 Aug 11 - 04:48 PM The best thing about Mudcat is the people here. One of the things the people do is get us to see things with different eyes, and to take chances. I thought I was incapable of learning guitar because of an old injury. I read was influenced by people here and wound up buying one of the buggers. Then I got speakerphone lessons from Rick in Canada, and I soaked up all the guitar threads. I'm still pretty bad (I need to find someplace to take serious lessons) but I can play. Actually, this place is NOT where someone with the slightest hint of Instrument Acquisition Disorder should be. |
Subject: RE: What have you people DONE to me?!? From: Big Ballad Singer Date: 01 Aug 11 - 04:23 PM Oh, MATURING is an asset... got it. Maturing is the thing I haven't done much of, at least not compared to the aging! ;) Ever see the movie "Jack" with Robin Williams playing a young boy who ages really rapidly? That's me... the 37-going-on-10 year old. |
Subject: RE: What have you people DONE to me?!? From: Georgiansilver Date: 01 Aug 11 - 04:02 PM None of us are too young or too narrow minded to learn something about ourselves or others..... aging and maturing is an asset!!! |

Subject: What have you people DONE to me?!? From: Big Ballad Singer Date: 01 Aug 11 - 12:36 PM I posted a few months back that I didn't think Leadbelly was all that great. I posited that many white musicians and record-company people of his era were just as enthralled with his 'authenticity' as a southern Negro convict as they were with his music. I took his playing to be passable, even though I would have admitted then that his playing WAS certainly better than a lot of other MUCH more famous and commercially successful blues artists who came later. Then someone went and started a thread about Leadbelly playing the 'windjammer' button-box accordion. NO FAIR!!! I'm NOT supposed to LIKE Leadbelly! I'm supposed to be a shallow, narrow-minded bigot like some people hinted at in my old thread. What have you lot DONE to me? I've found a new appreciation for Mr. Ledbetter... you've shattered some notions of mine, you troublemakers, you. (;-) |
