Subject: I'm trying to contact John Spires
From: Max Johnson
Date: 06 Aug 11 - 10:12 AM

I'm trying to contact John Spires, who, as well as being a solo performer, sang with The Dead Sea Surfers.

Please note the spelling - Spires, and if anyone can help, I'd be grateful if they would ask him to contact me via:

max[AT]nonesuch.force9.co.uk

Many thanks.

I'll refresh this a couple of times, and then assume that the message
is out there.

Max, is he UK based? I'm guessing he is from your email address... I'm afraid I've not heard of him, but I'm sure someone will have.

The more info you can provide, the better chance someone can offer an update! Thanks for clarifying that it isn't a misspelled Bellowhead 'Spiers', pronounced the same way but spelt differently!

In October 2009 John Spires wrote in the thread Dead Sea Surfers - what happened to?? that he was living in East London.

I heard he sang in Spain for a while. I understand there have been a few rare sightings in the UK and that he's occasionally seen at the Walthamstow club. Personally I haven't seen John since 1992 or '93.

Is it worth asking Kevin Shiels in that case, since he has dealings with the Walthamstow club?

Refreshing.

Thanks Surreysinger - In fact, it was Kevin who told me that there'd been a sighting.

Max, somewhere I've got a contact number or email for a chap who shared his house/flat until fairly recently. If I can't find it I know that said contact will be at Towersey (as he always is) so will see him then and pass on any info.

Hope you track him down soon.

Max, what about posting in the Tanner's Hatch thread? Lots of old folkies there, and at least one mention of Threadbare so somebody there might know. Link is

Tanners Hatch - Finding old friends

Hope you're keeping well! B xxx

Thanks for the suggestion Bonnie. Good idea. I'll do that soon, but don't want to seem like I'm spamming! I'll put out a shout on the (wonderfully nostalgic) "Folk Clubs London 1960s & 70s" thread in a couple of weeks.

I'm keeping great here in Heysham. Hope you are too. Max x.

Max

John was at Towersey for one day (today) and was delighted to hear that you want to contact him.

I have email addresses etc from him so will PM you as soon as I unpack and find them, probably tomorrow.
