I don't know how widely this song has circulated. I have it on a compilation CD from the Baltimore Songwriters Association, called "From Our Circle." It really reaches me, especially in light of the ohso nasty recent political activity around the debt ceiling. I cannot find a listening version on the 'Net. PM me if interested. Oneofthesedays I will learn how to upload to Youtube. I have several songs that I think should have wider distribution. Here are the lyrics and chords that I got from the author, himself:

WITH A HAMMER AND A NAIL
Copyright june 2000
Words and music by
Thomas G. Vincent
Key of D (play in C Capo up two frets)

C                     F          G
Where will you sleep tonight?
C                     F          G
Where will you lay your head?
C          F          G            C         F          G
Under a roof, or under the stars instead.

When evening is drawing near
Where will you rest your feet?
A room in the Inn
Or maybe, out in the street?

F                  G
How can we stand here helpless
C                     Am
When so many folks are homeless
F                                     G
With no room to call their own?
Chorus:
         C      F          G          C
Everybody needs a place to dwell
C                F          G
Somewhere safe and warm
          C             F               G               C
With a roof that's sound and four strong walls
             F                      G
To give shelter from the storm.
                  C         F             G
With some muscle and some sweat
            C                F            G
With a strength that must not fail
             C       F             G    Am
We can build a home for everyone
            F             G
With a hammer..and a nail

When thunder begins to roll
And lightning it comes again
Where will you run for shelter from the wind?

When Autumn is at an end
And Winter brings ice and snow
What will you do if you have nowhere to go?

Chorus:

Bridge:
             F                        Em
We can build a house for everyone
F       G    C
If we only try
             F                   Em    Am
So let's lift our (hammers) voices to the sky
    F                   F         G
Until we raise the rafters high

(Optional modulation to key of ED capo two)
Instrumental:

When you break your morning bread
And you say your daily prayer
Do you ever think to offer your neighbor a share?

When some of us have so much
And others they have none
What kind of a world will we pass on
When all is said and done?

Chorus:
Everybody needs a place to dwell
Somewhere safe and warm
A place where they can lay their head
And seek shelter from the storm

If we open up our hearts
Our strength it can not fail
We can build a home for everyone
With a hammer and a nail

If we open up our hearts
We surely must prevail
We can build a world for everyone
With a hammerAnd a Nail

Nice song, Saul. I hope I'll hear you sing it at the Getaway. Did the chord spacing come out the way you want, or should I change it to a monospace font so it's even? I'm going to post it without chords also, for the benefit of us who have trouble reading text and chords together. Can you tell us a bit about Thomas G. Vincent?

The spacing didn't come out quite right with my post. Perhaps monospacing would be better. I don't know HTML so good.

Tryinta reach him, Joe. Stay tuned...

Saul

Joe,
In the first line:
C                     F          G
Where will you sleep tonight?

The "F" chord goes over "sleep" and the "G" goes over "night" in the word "tonight." It would make more sense to 'Catters if they heard it, I suppose. The only audio I know of the song is on the CD I have. Do you suppose it would be OK to post that on Youtube? (I haven't heard back from Tom yet.) It would be a good opportunity for me to learn that skill, anyway.

Saul

Alright. I think I got it. I aligned it within the message entry window. Sorry to be so much trouble.

Where will you sleep tonight?
C                F       G
Where will you lay your head?
C         F       G          C       F   G
Under a roof, or under the stars instead.

When evening is drawing near
Where will you rest your feet?
A room in the Inn
Or maybe, out in the street?

F            G
How can we stand here helpless
C               Am
When so many folks are homeless
F                           G
With no room to call their own?
Chorus:
    C       F       G       C
Everybody needs a place to dwell
C          F       G
Somewhere safe and warm
         C             F    G             C

          F                G

Well, I think our joint effort succeeded, Saul. I added preformat <pre> tags before and </pre> after the text after you lined up the chords in the message-posting box, and I think that made it match to original Word document.
It's a hassle, isn't it?
