Hi, Pat - it's always best to check our database first. If you put [old dun cow] in square brackets in the search box on this page, you'll fine two versions. I'll send you one version by e-mail.

MatthewB,

McINTYRE

(somebody shouted it - apologies for my sense of humour)

McIntyre? - When my late dad used to sing it he always sang:-

Somebody shouted "Back inside"

Who's right I don't know but "Back inside" seems to make more sense to me given the story line.

Regards Jeff

Jeff, I've not heard it but "back in side" makes more sense to me (unless of course the shout for McIntyre was not heard correctly).

If they were already in the pub, who was being yelled at? This discussion has happened around these parts. The author of the song is known, and I believe (but I'm not positive) "McIntyre" is in the original version.

Jeri, I'll have to look the words up as I can't remember whether they were inside or out when somebody shouted McIntyre. All I think that I know is that at I'd have got blue blind paralytic druunk that night!!!

One of my problems with songs is that I know loads of bits (often just choruses) without knowing the full song. This gets worse with tunes... my biggest repertoire consists of the tunes I recognise, can "sing" in my head if somebody starts them and still can't play.

Jon, I do the same thing! I know tunes as "that one that goes like this." Here is the OLD DUN COW.

Jeri, I think that is the version that I have heard and they were certainly inside. This could start a new thread:

Who was McIntyre, why was he called for and/ or what was he doing?

I'm going to bed now but here's a theory, McIntyre was an arsonist.

Isn't this a music hall song? Then Mc Intyre could be some popular reference.

I'll try to keep this short! firstly the old dun cow was a pub in London back in the days when the fire brigade ONLY attended fires where the premises had a plaque on the wall proving they were fully paid up members of that fire club some of these plaques still exist and can be seen (so i'm told) around London Birmingham and liverpool. Macintyre was the fire chief of one of these brigades and was not strictly honorable in his attendances (unprovable now of course) the Dun Cow burned to the ground hence everyone shouting for him. they wouldn't have got in anyway The doors were locked while the regulars supped the stock, WHO was shouting The landlord who was silly enough to run outside leaving his regulars inside with his best booze.

I hope that helps

Graham (Guernsey)

Jeri, In the song, they are talking about what happened. So unless they are ghosts, my guess it they got out safely (apart from McIntyre who it appears was not there to need to get out).

well, according to the song, they went down into the cellers, nailed themselves inside and stayed there until after the roof fell in.

MMario,

There are some additional verses of unknown parentage that put an end on the story. Click here for a previous thread.

sorry Roger but thats the way i was taught it and I've sung it that way (emotionaly) for forty years. the plaques are real I've seen them. Jeri I dont Know if they got out. I assume they must have! In any case after all that booze they probably didn't notice if they did or did'nt.
