Sounds like unlikely-ever-to-be-tested bullshit put out by manufacturers/lovers of foam gig-bags.

I know which I'd trust the most, and it's not foam.

But hey-ho, it won't have my guitar in it, so who cares?

Somebody once pointed out to me the following interesting fact. Take a HIscox guitar case and see how far you can throw it. Then take any hi density foam case and perform the same act. You should discover that the weight of the Hiscox case allows you a greater distance due to its great weight. Oddly, the hi density foam case resists long throws.
Now…imagine you are a baggage handler in a really bad mood. You get a guitar case and, just to relieve the tension, you hurl it at the conveyor belt or into the cargo container. Result is that the foam case protects the guitar more because its difficult to achive a velocity with one that will result in the contents being damaged. Go figure.

Yep, another reason why I treat my instruments to a Hiscox, and stow the builder-supplied cases in the loft, is to preserve the anonymity of the cases' contents.

It wasn't for nothing that they called the powder-blue 70's cases with 'MARTIN' in big letters on them, "Steal-Me Cases"!

Its always a problem putting expensive instruments at risk in gig bags /semi rigid cases. I always use the cases provided by the makers for my Taylor/Lakewood/ovation and the banjos. Problem may be that each have the name of the guitar somewhere on the case and I think that this may be a security risk in itself. I am always reluctant to take my "Best" instruments to festivals for this reason, but feel that I dont give of my best when using cheaper instruments. Still, its a question of taking, or not, the risk.

Most of my cases are Hiscox - but I have a Tanglewood-made case for my Martin (the Martin case wore out...) and it's very sturdy indeed.

Not really, but it's a solution. There's another 'shoulder-harness' kinda thing that I've seen advertised on a US site, a bit cheaper, but I'm buggered if my old brain can remember the name of it, or the site. Personally, I don't go for cheap where protection of my guitars is concerned - a hundred quid or so to keep a £2.5k guitar safe seems a good deal to me - but I'm just one guy and I understand that we don't all share the same opinions or values.

Sorry to Ossonflags and John Mac if I came over as being a clever-shit on this one - I do truly understand that hard (and heavy) cases aren't for everyone, and it's really an individual choice.

Pax, chaps?

You are dead right John. Cases for placss.Hiscox are one of the best.

Just that the portabillity of these cases are hard to beat; especially walking from campsites and such.

Mebbe Hiscox could com up with a design that incorporates straps for carring case on your back?

The case my HD28V came with is a work of art, but it weighs a ton. Hiscoxs Cases are made just down the road from me and they occasionally have factory 'seconds' which are well worth looking at, I bought one for my DX1 for £60.00 and the only thing wrong with it is a very slight depression on the top surface.

The Calton problem was NOT UK , Just Calton Canada - I have most of my good gear in UK Caltons and have to agree about the weight problem

Hiscox cases are hard to beat for weight, strength and durability. Mine's been gigging all over for 32 years and still looks almost new. The Martin-supplied cases are OK, but as Backwoodsman says, very heavy.
I seem to remember hearing there were problems with Calton cases - ?

I'm sure you're right John, but I'm more than happy with the Hiscoxes I use for my herd. Very strong (I'd place them second only to Calton) and comparatively light for a hard-shell case - I keep the heavy Geibs the Martins came in in the boxes up in the loft.

BTW, I like your 'Horses/Courses - Cases/Places' analogy! Wish I could have thought of that! :-)

I have cases for different situations. One like the one under discussion for local gigs. An original hard case for car travel, and a Calton flight case, for guess what?
Like horse for courses, there are cases for places.
Backwoodsman, you'd be surprised at just how strong these high density polystyrene cases are!
They also have the added bonus of keeping your guitar at an even temperature.

I agree, but most 'high end' guitars do come with a good case. I had a really nice Sigma DR28H wich didn't and although a nice guitar, A hiscox case (at the time) would have been more expensive than the guitar itself! The semi rigid did a fine job for me and when I eventually sold the Sigma, it was in just as good condition as when I bought it.

I'm not putting a £2k+ guitar in a gig-bag or even a 'semi-rigid' case, Silas. But it's a personal choice thang, and I guess it's a good solution for anyone who's prepared to sacrifice security for lightness. If I was taking a £250 'beater' out, it would do just fine.

BTW, this isn't meant as a slap-down to anyone, just my own POV based on the instruments I have, and which I want to take the best care of.

I used to have a similar one that was made by Stagg. They are very good for what they are - a semi rigid case. They offer a lot more protection than a padded gig bag, but can't be compared to a Hiscox or other hard shell case. But, for £30.00 they are pretty good and very lightweight!

Not for me thanks, I don't trust gig-bags no matter what they're made of, and polystyrene, whatever the density, is flimsy in comparison to a case. I'll stick to Hiscox cases but hey-ho, it's each to their own, and if you're happy to take the risk, the Blacks bag/case looks as good (or bad, depending on your POV) as any.

It's a high density polystyrenen case, with a zipped cover. They're very good, and extremely light.
