I meant to Ray Charles 69th birthday on Thursday. Sure Ray has gone through some strange phases during his career, but the 'cat is a blues and folk site, and this man can flat out sing, play and write the blues and certainly was one of the founding fathers of soul.
I recently read a biography of Ray. I think the thing I got most from it was how he refused to let his blindness hold him back. Ray was born with full vision, and didn't lose his sight until he was approximately seven. His mother insisted he did as much as possible for himself as she often stated 'I won't be around forever' Unfortuntely she was too right with this prediction, she died when Ray was in his teens.
