Hi Mick

Many thanks for your suggestion. I managed to do what I wanted with my last movie but it wasn't straightforward and I have some concerns with the results.

I will have a look at Download helper....it looks good in the blurb.

Can't try it tonight England kick off in a few minutes and I am getting ready to watch it on TV.

Good bottle of red wine and wife packed off to our grandson's to look after the children !!!

Many thanks

MikeL

Zamzar is rather good for pretty much anything.

The free version of YouTube Downloader converts FLV files to WMV, AVI, MOV, and MP4.

Mike

If you haven't already downloaded thousands of files as flv you could download them from youtube in another format.

I don't know what your using to download them, but if you use Firefox as browser, you can add the Download Helper add-on and this will give you the option on quality of recordings available and a choice of conversions when you download.

I do have a version of Vegas studio, but it's on my Windows machine, which is not connected at the moment so I can't check what's possible with that. I have used SUPER@ before without problems I think, but if you're having problems with that search CNETs site I'm sure there are plenty of flv converters available: eg CNET flv converters

I don't do much audio or video but aren't most media programs able to handle a pretty broad range of formats by just adding the correct codec file to tell them how to translate the inputs?

I see quite a few places offering "flv codecs," generic ones and ones specific for pretty mundane programs - windows and mac.

A new program might offer some advantages, but if loading a simple "interpreter" makes the program you're familiar with work with the format, it'd save having to learn where all the whiz-bang buttons are in a new program.

(Of course, anything associated with Flash is sort of expected to misbehave, I suppose.)

John

Hi Nick

Thanks for the detailed instructions. As you say without these it is very confusing to find what you(I) want.

Even with them it took me a while to get it right !!!

I did manage to download Super and have it on my desktop. In the process of doing this it installed Internet Explorer 9 which I had tried to avoid previously.

This apart I have managed to look at the program and I tried to convert a .flv file. As I couldn't see a choice of Mpeg I selected .MOV. The program started to convert but came up with a detailed and confusing ( to me !!) error report.

As it was my first attempt I have probably got something wrong so I will need to go through it more carefully. I have to say that it isn't the most user friendly program that I have tried.

Many thanks though for your assistance and I am sure that once I get the parameters right it will do what I want it to.
e
Cheers

Mike

I'm guessing that you have gone to the wrong download.

Super is great - but as BillD said it is not easy to download. I'm guessing they make money because the site goes to all sorts of other products and - dare I say it - people have little patience and click the wrong things.

At the end of the day (BillD will know this as he is a great recommender of stuff) you have to be quite savvy to get the fruit. Super is good fruit - just hard to find.

THERE ARE NO WATERMARKS AND NO MONEY

Go to Bill's first link : http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html

Scroll to the bottom of the page and just above the AVS Converter ad it says "Start downloading SUPER ©"

On that page just under the red box at the top it says:

SUPER © is a FREE Multimedia software to download and use

Click on download and use

On that page go to the bottom of the page to:

SUPER © v2011.build.49 (July 1st, 2011) FreeWare for Windows®    Comes with a full Installer / Un-Installer package.

Download SUPER © setup file from our ??? dedicated server

It works - it's good software. Hard to find.

hi

Thanks again for the suggestions.

Today I decided to try SUPER. It has worked OK in my video-edit programs. However is NOT free. The version I downloaded was an "unactivated2 version which inserts a watermark right in the centre of the picture.

To activate and remove the water marks costs about $60. I am not sure how much I would use this so this is probably more than I want to pay.

I will look at the others and see if I can get the results I want free.

Thanks

Mike

There's an add on for Firefox called "Download Helper" which will download and convert on line videos on the fly. I believe it will extract the audio, but I will need to check as I am using Chrome browser at the moment.

There is a GUI for ffmpeg called WinFF:

http://winff.org/html_new/downloads.html

Available for Windows and Linux.

I use it quite a lot in Ubuntu Linux. Easy to use and effective.

Hi Guys

Many thanks for all the suggestions - I did try the VLC option as I have it installed. For some reason I didn't manage to get it to do what I expected.

I will read up the recommendations more fully and will try one.

Thanks Again

MikeL2

If I read it correctly, one on the players I use VLC uses the ffmpeg Jon suggests, and will do conversion as well as playing....at least I was able to select a video FLV file and see options for converting it to other formats such as mpeg and wmv.

(I believe ffmpeg doesn't do anything by itself, but needs to be 'çompiled' and used IN a program.)

ffmpeg would convert it into various other formats.

also...though *I* have not used it, http://avidemux.sourceforge.net/ will also do FLV editing...maybe easier.

(I personally do very litle editing....but I can play FLV files in 3-4 players.)

I think "fairuse4wmv" might do it, and another possible might be VLC media player. Not sure, just thoughts.

"Super" will convert anything to anything...if you can work your way thru their blather.

http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html

but it is recommended to get it from this site to bypass the complex download steps

http://www.videohelp.com/tools/SUPER (download from mirror site)

hi

I have downloaded some video material from Youtube to include in a couple of motion pictures that I am planning.

I see that the file type is .flv format.

For my video processing I use any one of the following programs.

- Vegas Movie Studio 10; Adobe Premiere Elements 9 or, Corel Videostudio X3Pro. -

None of these will accept the .flv format files.

I have googled to try to find a reliable and free conversion program and have located <" AVS Video Converter 8.0 ">.

Does anyone here know if this is OK to use and could someone give me any advice that will help me to achieve what I am trying to do??

Thanks

Mikel2
