Subject: Origins: 1960's Elementary School Song Re: JOBS
From: GUEST,Jerry Cohn
Date: 12 Aug 11 - 10:14 AM

My father recently passed away, and I have been recalling a song/group of songs that has been part of our family for decades.

It is a song or grouping of songs from the 1950's or 1960's for elementary school. The song it describes jobs/professions, such as the postman and the policeman:{Lyrics}

"He stands in the middle of the street, where he plainly can be seen... and he waves to stop when the light is red and to walk when it turns green..."

and

"... how do you do? A letter for you..."

I grew up in South Orange, New Jersey but now live in Washington, DC.   Do you know of this song(s)? I imagine it is copyrighted, but it would not necessarily be REGISTERED FORMALLY with the U.S. Copyright office. Even if it were, I don't know the title...

I really want to figure out the name of this song so that I could either find the complete lyrics or a recording.

Thank you!
Jerry Cohn

I remember one about the policeman, the fireman, the postman and the street sweeper ("The man who sweeps the street for you/ Yes, he deserves a medal, too."). The verse about the postman ended: "Always smiles when he can say/ I have good news for you today." I believe the song is called "The Policeman and the Fireman and the Postman."
Is that the song you're looking for? Try Peter Muldavin, the Kiddie Rekord King, at www.kiddierekordking.com

I went looking for this lyric. What I remember from my own elementary school, circa 1960 in Wilmington, DE, was the following lyric:

The fireman, the policeman, the postman too, and the man who cleans the streets for you
Every time that one appears
Give him three big rousing cheers!

I have a feeling this is NOT what you're looking for, but ...

Sesame Street had "The People in the Neighborhood" song about the policeman, fireman, postman, baker, grocer, etc. You can find the lyrics (some of them anyway) at the link below:

Bruce: I remember the lyrics pretty much the way you do, mine from the 1940s, the one difference being: The policeman, the fireman etc. This way the rhythm works out more smoothly, too.

The song quoted by Jerry Cohn is clearly not the one quoted by Cool Beans et al. The latter is familiar to me from childhood. It is called "Heroes of Peace". It is by Irving Caesar (music by Gerald Marks) & appears in their _Sing a Song of Safety_ (1937). The words are as follows:

The Policeman, the Fireman, the Postman, too,
And the man who sweeps the streets for you,
    Ev'ry time that one appears,
Give him three loud rousing cheers.

In rain or snow or hail or sleet,
The Policeman watches ev'ry street,
Through the day and all nigh, too,
His goal is "Safety First" for you.

The Postman without boast or brag,
A thousand letters in his bag,
Always smiles when he can say,
"I have good news for you today."

The Fireman is brave and bold,
In blazing heat and freezing cold,
Answers at the first alarm,
And tries to keep us safe from harm.

The man who sweeps the streets for you,
Yes, he deserves some medals too;
When he sweeps the dirt away,
It leaves the germs no place to play.

Thanks for leading us back on track toward the original request, Joe. I think I'm going in the right direction now. Hope I can find the songbook upstairs. I have some of the books in that American Book Co. series, but I don't know if I have the right one.

The Traffic Policeman

He stands in the middle of the street,
Where he plainly can be seen,
And he waves to stop when the light is red,
And to walk when it is green.

Song: "The Traffic Policeman" from Music for Young Americans; Berg, Burns, Haley and Pace; American Book Co.: New York, 1959; p. 23.
I'm gathering from "snippet search" that the song may be called "The Helpers," and it may be in the Second Grade or Third Grade volume of Music for Young Americans

Here's is my ladder, tall and strong.

Just climb aboard and turn me on.

All Around the Neighborhood added 3-20-06 Original Author Unknown

All around the neighborhood,
People help each other.
The driver on the bus,
Helps a girl and her mother.

The girl and her mother,
See the butcher for meat.
The butcher gives a letter,
To the carrier down the street.

The carrier asks the barber,
To trim his mustache.
The barber sweeps the hair up,
And puts out all the trash.

The trash collector stops,
When a fire truck clangs its bell.
Firefighters join the police,
Who make sure all is well.

All around the neighborhood,
There's lots that people do.
All around the neighborhood,
Who helps you?

She wore a big and friendly smile.
So now I hope that someday you,
May go to see the doctor too!

I'm Jerry Cohn. On Aug 11, 2012 - 10:14 AM, I approached this board as my "last hope" to find a song. (As a busy "Man of Industry" one would think I'd have more important things to do...(!)--but I didn't." THANK YOU for finding it for me!! It's the one I've referenced below entitled: "The Traffic Policeman"

He stands in the middle of the street,
Where he plainly can be seen,
And he waves to stop when the light is red,
And to walk when it is green.
Source: http://files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/ED025865.pdf
Song: "The Traffic Policeman" from Music for Young Americans; Berg, Burns, Haley and Pace; American Book Co.: New York, 1959; p. 23.

I'm 50 years old and I can still hear my father singing it about 40 years later==isn't that crazy?! He'd pantomime along with the song. As I've developed a taste for "trance" dance music, this entire scenario is rather incongruous. I've also tracked down (after 15 year search) the yellow, motorized dump truck that was stolen from me on the first day that I had been presented it when I brought it to SHOW-AND-TELL in KINDERGARTEN. (Can you imagine what I felt after finally laying eyes on it again on eBay after years of searching?!) I imagine that the Postman song is part of the same catalog as the Traffic Policeman. I am still making efforts to identify that, as well. I suppose what I want to say here is that you probably don't get told often enough that your assumption of the role of "Keepers of the Ancient Songs" is appreciated--so Thank You! Your efforts have value to me.
Jerry
