When the night has closed in and the heart is heavy from the 10 o'clock news, there's a good thing to do. Go to YouTube, enter 'yodel' in the Search box, and start roaming the world.

Last night, to my great joy, I discovered many new songs from Oesch's die Dritten. (note the use of the "magic" apostrophe by a group that doesn't even speak English.)

Here's a video that shows a very basic need in yodeling, one that hasn't been mentioned in either of my how-to-yodel CD's.

use a blackboard

Melanie (whom I just love) shows that when you want to yodel, you have HAVE TO KNOW AHEAD OF TIME what syllables you are going to use. You don't just start warbling any old thing at random. You have to have a plan, because you've already got so many challenges that you just haven't time to summon syllables out of the blue.

So the next time you want to yodel, plan ahead. If you just want to listen, listen to the various tunes by Oesch's die Dritten. Melanie's high notes are so sweet, so lovely. Yodeling doesn't have to be corny.

(The Oesches are a family. The name means The Third Oesches because they are the third generation of musicians. Does anybody know who the older woman is?)

That's a lovely post, leeneia. I'll listen next time I'm unable to sleep...which is usually. Thank you.

You're welcome, Maeve. I'm sorry to hear that you can't sleep.

Today I was thinking about the complexity of music on a continuum. I decided that the degrees are:

hum
sing
sing harmony
sing opera
yodel

I wonder if I forgot anything.

Put them together and add overtone singing.
