Subject: RE: Tech: Are We Alive Again? From: Bill D Date: 18 Aug 11 - 01:18 PM "Don't know what the trouble was " It was big storms and a power surge that messed up several computers. Max had to go shopping, then transfer data to new PCs. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Are We Alive Again? From: Max Date: 18 Aug 11 - 02:01 PM This is a temporary setup that's plugging right now, won't be perfect or existent to fix most. Be patient. The stuff we needed had to be ordered and shipped had to make due with what I could buy at BestBuy (which for a guy like me is ALMOST as bad as buying an Ovation in an emergency because your CF Martin broke). Though, I wouldn't buy an Ovation if it were all I had to float on for a week lost at sea. Joe and the clones are collecting a list of glitches for me to whack at. Maybe we should start a thread. Fixed the clock, which might cause trouble till I can get into the DB and change all the posts prior. I'll tell ya more soon, for this was a notable enough situation to make an impact me permanently. This one hurt me a little. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Are We Alive Again? From: Bill D Date: 18 Aug 11 - 02:12 PM ♫ "There's no tomorrow, there's just tonight.."♫ |
Subject: RE: Tech: Are We Alive Again? From: gnu Date: 18 Aug 11 - 02:17 PM Max... make a permanent impact... don't like the sound of that but I shant make any assumptions. I, WE?, will just have to wait until you tell us more soon. If it's $ ya need, I can't do as well as in the past but I'll find a few beans somewhere. Mudcat is far to valuable a resource, both musically and socially, to be permanently harmed by Mother Nature (the bitch!) or human nature (the glitch?). |
Subject: RE: Tech: Are We Alive Again? From: JohnInKansas Date: 18 Aug 11 - 02:40 PM Noted above that the "mudcat clock" appeared to be 12 hours off, but it now seems to be 24 hours off - unless I'm in a time warp of some kind. My clock is showing 1:00 pm 17 August 2011 Mudcat time would be 2:00 pm 17 August 2011 Last post shown (when I started this post) was 1:56 pm 18 August 2011. No big deal, until the server clock corrects itself or somebody gets around to a correction. (I don't think Max picked up and moved to a different time zone, but he may have thought about it.) Based on the timestamp for the last post that was aparently prior to the BIG ZAP, the disaster was at about 14 Aug 11 06:56 PM. For those who just can't stand having a discussion interrupted, the "active threads" displayed then would have been those less than "1 day" (24 hours) old BZ (Before Zap). Refresh 3 days back doesn't pick up any additional threads working, so a "7 days" back Refresh is needed to see all that were up at ZAP TIME. There were about 69 threads in the top section and about 25 in BS - minus those already having new post AZ. Posting a list would have made a very long post. It appears that a few people knew how to look up threads "across the great divide," as some have been brought back to life, but it appears that "all has been saved," (is a "Hellelujah!" required?). Startup traffic appears to have been heavy, since quite a few posts got on while I was still getting "no response" errors, probably just time-outs for the last several due to traffic. Anyone who can't read this post should of course "just keep trying." (I've been reading too many software manuals, so I know that the advice "if your email quits working you need to send an email to your ISP" is standard computer stuff - hope it's not too techie.) John |
Subject: RE: Tech: Are We Alive Again? From: Jeri Date: 18 Aug 11 - 02:53 PM Time warp? It's just a jump to the left... Easy, I guess to do a global change sometime. When it actually IS tomorrow, it might be harder. I guess I'm supposed to be collecting glitches. (Didn't get the memo.) |
Subject: RE: Tech: Are We Alive Again? From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 18 Aug 11 - 03:09 PM Tomorrow is always when I'm going to do all the stuff I didn't feel like doing Today. You means it's finally caught up with me??? |
Subject: RE: Tech: Are We Alive Again? From: DrugCrazed Date: 18 Aug 11 - 03:20 PM So it wasn't just me. Thank god for that. I thought Max had finally come to his senses and blocked me! Let us know if we can do anything, and I'll echo the SUPERDOOPERAWESOME surge protector idea. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Are We Alive Again? From: gnu Date: 18 Aug 11 - 04:16 PM Say what ya want about surge protection but lightning is Mom Nature's way of saying... "You really thought that would stop me?" I have seen far less than Mom Nature kick the crap outta secondary protection... at 6A and 600V. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Are We Alive Again? From: katlaughing Date: 18 Aug 11 - 04:25 PM There are links to paypal and a snail mail addy on THIS PAGE for those of you who have been asking. Also, Max, I know it isn't of paramount importance, but I can't get the auction to work. I have instructions from Don Meixner to put another of his gorgeous, hand-made silver bracelets up for auction, 100% to Mudcat with a minimum bid $40 as the price of silver has gone up. My sympathies on your having to use an Ovation.:-) luvyakat |
Subject: RE: Tech: Are We Alive Again? From: DrugCrazed Date: 18 Aug 11 - 04:25 PM We should surge protect the surge protection protecting the surge protection protecting the surge protection... That'd work right? |

Subject: RE: Tech: Are We Alive Again? From: Amos Date: 18 Aug 11 - 04:44 PM Max deserves a standing Ovation in any case. Maybe he'd prefer a standing Martin, though. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Are We Alive Again? From: MartinRyan Date: 17 Aug 11 - 05:37 PM Anyone having problems resetting "Messages since last visit" option? Regards |
Subject: RE: Tech: Are We Alive Again? From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 17 Aug 11 - 05:42 PM Max - new threads don't go to the top of the headings, and refreshes don't seem to work either - they get buried about halfway down the pile, at least on my puter. And this thread is right at the bottom, when I know how new the last posts were so it should be near the top. This wasn't happening awhile ago, when I posted in the Boswell thread. But my new one ("Smithsonian Folkways Archive") refuses to rise. Sounds like a glitch. Are you aware of it? Apologies if you've talked about it and I missed it. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Are We Alive Again? From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 17 Aug 11 - 05:45 PM Have the same problem on my personal page in my list of Traced threads too :-( |
Subject: RE: Tech: Are We Alive Again? From: Bill D Date: 17 Aug 11 - 06:22 PM Yep...I see same glich as Bonnie...posts go into thread, but thread stays in same place |
Subject: RE: Tech: Are We Alive Again? From: Jeri Date: 17 Aug 11 - 06:23 PM I figure it's because: Mudcat time: 17 August 2011 - 6:19 PM EDT and "RE: Whitby Sessions 2011 18 Aug 11 - 05:06 PM" I see the date has been corrected. When "now" catches up to the posts dated tomorrow, the reset thing ought to work. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Are We Alive Again? From: Jeri Date: 17 Aug 11 - 06:28 PM In other words, the re-set thing changes the time to NOW and the messages were posted after that (as far as Mudcat 'knows'). |
Subject: RE: Tech: Are We Alive Again? From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 17 Aug 11 - 06:35 PM So should we wait until the real 18th to Refresh, so the new things can get their chance at the top? I see the Ukelele makers haven't budged! |
Subject: RE: Tech: Are We Alive Again? From: JohnInKansas Date: 17 Aug 11 - 06:56 PM When the 'cat first came up, the clock was set a day off, so a post made then would go to the top of the list. When the clock was reset, the next post would be stamped at the earlier (correct?) time. Since each post has it's own date/time stamp, the date/time shown will be "in order out of order" until the actual current date catches up to the ones that were posted as tomorrow earlier today. My understanding is that each post is given a number in mostly consecutive order, in the sequence in which they are first received. Each thread is also numbered in the order received, but all the thread knows is the post numbers of the posts that belong to that thread. To display a thread, it has to be "assembled" by calling up all the posts in the thread, and they are apparently sorted by the "post numbers" - which should put them in the correct sequence in which they were posted. The time recorded for the posting, according to a possibly incorrect clock setting, is displayed, but isn't what's used to put the posts in sequence first-to-last. A post made when the clock was "wrong" will continue to display the wrong time - even though it will appear before later posts and after earlier posts, according to "real time." If it's a problem, I suppose you could wait until tomorrow to read the top of the thread(?????). I've never found it too much of an inconvenience being occasionally "a day late" getting the news, although the commonly associated "dollar short" can be annoying. John |
Subject: RE: Tech: Are We Alive Again? From: JohnInKansas Date: 17 Aug 11 - 07:07 PM Addendum: It does appear that the threads are sorted by date/time stamp, but posts within a thread are sorted in sequence regardless of the date/time recorded for the post. It may be necessary to watch how things develop to update the theory ... ... ... John |
