Subject: 'When Rock Goes Acoustic' - clichés... From: Will Fly Date: 02 Sep 11 - 04:19 PM I'm just watching "Rock Goes Acoustic" on BBC4 (UK TV) - seems strangely unsatisfying and vapid for some reason - or it is just me? Anyone else watching it? |
Subject: RE: 'When Rock Goes Acoustic' - clichés... From: Will Fly Date: 02 Sep 11 - 04:27 PM Apparently it's "heroic" to be able to stand in front of an audience with just an acoustic guitar - true "nobility"... according to rock musicians like Johnny Marr. Well, I'll be buggered - hadn't realised so many of us were heroic and noble. |

Subject: RE: 'When Rock Goes Acoustic' - clichés... From: Will Fly Date: 02 Sep 11 - 04:51 PM Just seen Devendra Banhart, sitting cross-legged in a cape & hood, surrounded by candles, strumming away. Yawn. Decent music - but... Thank the Lord for a brief clip of Neil Young singing "Old Man" from 1972 - no bullshit there. Aaargh - James Blunt! OH NO! |
Subject: RE: 'When Rock Goes Acoustic' - clichs... From: Jack Campin Date: 02 Sep 11 - 05:03 PM It's a pity there was nobody around to shout "Judas!" and forcibly plug them back into the mains when people first tried playing that stuff unamplified. Might have spared us decades of dullness. |
Subject: RE: 'When Rock Goes Acoustic' - clichés... From: Richard Bridge Date: 02 Sep 11 - 06:48 PM I'm looking forward to running the rig in my local pub tomorrow night - first half will be some youngsters doing metal music on plugged acoustic guitars (actually my guitars, their acoustics have no pickups in - and as loud and heavy as I can get the sound! |
Subject: RE: 'When Rock Goes Acoustic' - clichés... From: Dave MacKenzie Date: 02 Sep 11 - 06:55 PM So now I know - James Blunt is a woman in a wet t-shirt with 5 o'clock shadow! |
Subject: RE: 'When Rock Goes Acoustic' - clichés... From: GUEST,punkfolkrocker Date: 02 Sep 11 - 07:11 PM 'When Rock Goes Acoustic' the title put me off watching... might just as well spend an hour celebrating "When Erections Go Limp" or "When Beer Goes Flat".... |
Subject: RE: 'When Rock Goes Acoustic' - clichés... From: Brian May Date: 02 Sep 11 - 07:21 PM Oh bugger, I quite enjoyed it. Perhaps I'm a transvestite after all. I thought a handbag that matched your acoustic was chic . . . Go on relax all you heroes! Have fun |
Subject: RE: 'When Rock Goes Acoustic' - clichés... From: Richard Bridge Date: 02 Sep 11 - 07:25 PM Dunno. I'm thinking about a folkie-ised version of ArchEnemy's "Revolution Begins". I already do "Substitute" "Play with Fire" "You Better Move On" "Tell Me" and "Shooting Star" - Oh and "Summertime Blues" and "Something Else". And people call me a traddie purist. If it's a good song it can be translated. Many rock songs however are arrangements masquerading as songs. |
Subject: RE: 'When Rock Goes Acoustic' - clichés... From: Leadfingers Date: 02 Sep 11 - 10:07 PM Who is Johnny Marr ? Maybe I should get a Television then I might not spend so much time listening to Radio 4 and On Line ! |
Subject: RE: 'When Rock Goes Acoustic' - clichés... From: GUEST,HenryB. Date: 02 Sep 11 - 10:15 PM For goodness sake stop bleating on about how great and wonderful all folkies are...and for anyone who doesn't know, Johnny Marr was the guitarist with the Smiths and used to go to Harry Boardmans club at the Unicotn in Manchester. |
Subject: RE: 'When Rock Goes Acoustic' - clichés... From: Dave Hanson Date: 03 Sep 11 - 04:21 AM Acurates egg of a programme, and why did James Blount change his name to Blunt ? Dave H |
Subject: RE: 'When Rock Goes Acoustic' - clichés... From: Richard Bridge Date: 03 Sep 11 - 04:57 AM That's a matter of record. He wanted his name to sound less posh when he recorded pop songs for the proles. |
Subject: RE: 'When Rock Goes Acoustic' - clichés... From: GUEST,Phil B Date: 03 Sep 11 - 05:04 AM Johnny Marr is one of lifes better guitarists and well worth checking out. He creates very sophisticated and unique harmonic acompaniments and rarely does the 'guitar solo' thang. Not a great overall 'Smiths' fan but have been appreciating his contribution for years. |
Subject: RE: 'When Rock Goes Acoustic' - clichés... From: GUEST,Phil B Date: 03 Sep 11 - 05:05 AM Did enjoy the Joni and the Neil Young clips. |
Subject: RE: 'When Rock Goes Acoustic' - clichés... From: scouse Date: 03 Sep 11 - 05:16 AM I watched it and got bored half way through but managed to stick with it did enjoy the Joni and the Neil Young bits as mentioned and you would of though that someone would have mentioned John Martyn and what about that idiot poncin' around from the Smiths where's the Acoustic in that.... one guy strummin' away!!! Gimmi a break. As Aye, Phil |
Subject: RE: 'When Rock Goes Acoustic' - clichés... From: MikeL2 Date: 03 Sep 11 - 05:17 AM hi Will I watched it and like you it left me wondering what it was all about. I don't know if this was supposed to be the best of acoustic guitar playing that emanated from the rock scene but the performances were sadly lacking in excitement and entertainment. Ok there were a couple of excellent technical peformances ( Roger McGinn and Pete Townshend ) but the rest of the show for me me was lack-lustre and patronising. As for James Blunt, the thought of him flouncing into Croatia on a tank playing his guitar paints a strange picture of British forces' impact as a fighting force !!! Cheers Mike |
Subject: RE: 'When Rock Goes Acoustic' - clichés... From: Edthefolkie Date: 03 Sep 11 - 06:14 AM Vapid as charged. While watching it I thought it was somehow financed by MTV. However it turned out to be BBC Wales, script & voiceover by all purpose bloody expert Stuart Maconie, also Mark Radcliffe of Mark'n'Lard. Maconie used to pop up ceaselessly on C4 "100 greatest Somebody namechecked Richard Thompson but no footage. Ah yes - he has a white beard, is bald, and over 40 (note sneering sweater/beard/tankard etc references at start of programme). Amazed Bert Jansch was allowed on but then he's officially cool innit. |
Subject: RE: 'When Rock Goes Acoustic' - clichés... From: Hamish Date: 03 Sep 11 - 06:49 AM Well I remember seeing Led Zep in Dundee, about 1971. Wow! An acousric set. Radical. Page was a decent acoustic guitarist and had learnt a few tricks from Davie Graham. It knocked me and my mates out at the time. |
Subject: RE: 'When Rock Goes Acoustic' - clichés... From: GUEST,Henryb Date: 03 Sep 11 - 06:47 PM Oh yeah..someone called scouse would automatically knock a Manc..very grown up..very adult! |
Subject: RE: 'When Rock Goes Acoustic' - clichés... From: Acorn4 Date: 03 Sep 11 - 07:07 PM I really enjoyed it - I've liked Albert Lee's approach and a pity he didn't get to play a bit mo re - loved things like the clip of Jimmy Page in a skiffle band. The dotting about between the various eras was more effective than just a chronological treatment. A pleasant hour of nostalgia. |
Subject: RE: 'When Rock Goes Acoustic' - clichés... From: Stringsinger Date: 04 Sep 11 - 11:54 AM Rock music is a genre that is manufactured by the music industry and has been taken up by the public as some kind of identifiable product that grew organically like folk music. I don't buy it. Most of it, (not all) is loud and obnoxious and doesn't translate well into an acoustic setting, (the Beatles notwithstanding). The singing is mostly shouting and straining. (Oddly, I think that Elvis could sing well, a nice baritone.) The reason that it's not working as a series is rock and acoustic is an oxymoron. Rock is meant to be loud and ear shattering. Some of it can persuade people to dance but this element has alway been a given in African-American blues and dance music and not necessarily in rock which by in large doesn't swing. |
Subject: RE: 'When Rock Goes Acoustic' - clichés... From: Dave MacKenzie Date: 04 Sep 11 - 01:32 PM I like 'Starman' but I'm not sure about Bowie with a blue acoustic guitar which spent most of the number hanging on his back is all that relevant. |
Subject: RE: 'When Rock Goes Acoustic' - clichés... From: GUEST,HenryB Date: 04 Sep 11 - 03:56 PM I'll say it again...it's this blasted superior, better than thou, attitude of folkies which makes the whole genre seem precious, twee and a wee bit silly. |
Subject: RE: 'When Rock Goes Acoustic' - clichés... From: GUEST,999 Date: 04 Sep 11 - 05:03 PM When trad goes electric, then ya got something :-) |
Subject: RE: 'When Rock Goes Acoustic' - clichés... From: Will Fly Date: 04 Sep 11 - 05:28 PM it's this blasted superior, better than thou, attitude of folkies which makes the whole genre seem precious, twee and a wee bit silly. No it isn't. I'm not a folkie. I just like my music unpretentious and straightforward, and I don't care whether it's folk, jazz, blues, rock'n roll, ragtime or funk - all of which, by the way, I've played in my time and still play. What doesn't turn me on is a series of talking heads talking platitudes about the place of the acoustic guitar in rock music. Thank the lord for Pete Townsend though, and his down-to-earth boogie-ing on the guitar (acoustic or electric - doesn't matter). One performance from him says more than a dozen talking heads. |
Subject: RE: 'When Rock Goes Acoustic' - clichés... From: foggers Date: 05 Sep 11 - 08:57 AM Aye we watched it and I thought it was a piece of over-inflated nothing. And the best line I ever heard about James Blunt was from the wonderful wit of Mitch Benn, who introduced his parody of JB's top hit with the observation that James Blunt is the only person alive who name serves as his own cockney rhyming slang... |
Subject: RE: 'When Rock Goes Acoustic' - clichés... From: Richard Bridge Date: 05 Sep 11 - 11:38 AM Berkely Hunt got there first, but is dead now. |
