Subject: 'When Rock Goes Acoustic' - clichés... From: Will Fly Date: 02 Sep 11 - 04:19 PM I'm just watching "Rock Goes Acoustic" on BBC4 (UK TV) - seems strangely unsatisfying and vapid for some reason - or it is just me? Anyone else watching it? |

I already do "Substitute" "Play with Fire" "You Better Move On" "Tell Me" and "Shooting Star" - Oh and "Summertime Blues" and "Something Else". And people call me a traddie purist. If it's a good song it can be translated. Many rock songs however are arrangements masquerading as songs. |

He creates very sophisticated and unique harmonic acompaniments and rarely does the 'guitar solo' thang. Not a great overall 'Smiths' fan but have been appreciating his contribution for years. |

I don't know if this was supposed to be the best of acoustic guitar playing that emanated from the rock scene but the performances were sadly lacking in excitement and entertainment. Ok there were a couple of excellent technical peformances ( Roger McGinn and Pete Townshend ) but the rest of the show for me me was lack-lustre and patronising. As for James Blunt, the thought of him flouncing into Croatia on a tank playing his guitar paints a strange picture of British forces' impact as a fighting force !!! Cheers Mike |

However it turned out to be BBC Wales, script & voiceover by all purpose bloody expert Stuart Maconie, also Mark Radcliffe of Mark'n'Lard. Maconie used to pop up ceaselessly on C4 "100 greatest Somebody namechecked Richard Thompson but no footage. Ah yes - he has a white beard, is bald, and over 40 (note sneering sweater/beard/tankard etc references at start of programme). Amazed Bert Jansch was allowed on but then he's officially cool innit. |

The dotting about between the various eras was more effective than just a chronological treatment. A pleasant hour of nostalgia. |

From: Stringsinger Date: 04 Sep 11 - 11:54 AM Rock music is a genre that is manufactured by the music industry and has been taken up by the public as some kind of identifiable product that grew organically like folk music. I don't buy it. Most of it, (not all) is loud and obnoxious and doesn't translate well into an acoustic setting, (the Beatles notwithstanding). The singing is mostly shouting and straining. (Oddly, I think that Elvis could sing well, a nice baritone.) The reason that it's not working as a series is rock and acoustic is an oxymoron. Rock is meant to be loud and ear shattering. Some of it can persuade people to dance but this element has alway been a given in African-American blues and dance music and not necessarily in rock which by in large doesn't swing. |

I'm not a folkie. I just like my music unpretentious and straightforward, and I don't care whether it's folk, jazz, blues, rock'n roll, ragtime or funk - all of which, by the way, I've played in my time and still play. What doesn't turn me on is a series of talking heads talking platitudes about the place of the acoustic guitar in rock music. Thank the lord for Pete Townsend though, and his down-to-earth boogie-ing on the guitar (acoustic or electric - doesn't matter). One performance from him says more than a dozen talking heads. |
