Subject: Lyr Req: Campfire Chant: 'koomalatta veesta'
From: NightWing

Long, long ago (35-45 years) at church reunions in the summer, we had a Call and Response type chant that consisted of (I assume!) nonsense words. For some reason today, it floated into my mind and now it's stuck there. The problem is that there were actually TWO related chants: the other was a spoof of the nonsense words and had REAL words. For some reason, I can't remember the first bit of the nonsense version and keep going into the spoof version when I circle back to the beginning. Does anybody else remember this? and remember how it starts?

With rhythm provided by slapping the thighs, then clapping the hands, the leader chants or sings each line and the rest of the group chants or sings each line in the same rhythm. When it's finished, you increase the tempo and start again.

-- Nonsense version --

[three missing lines]
koomalatta koomalatta koomalatta veesta
ohh no no no not a veesta
eeny meeny decimeeny oo walla walla meeny exameeny zollameeny oo walla wah
bo bo skee wat'n dot'n wadat'n chow
beet belly oat'n dot'n bo bo b'deet'n dot'n sh-h-h-h

The missing lines are similar to the first three lines of the spoof below, something like "fee", "fee fie", "fee fie fum". (In essence, "one", "one two", "one two three".)

-- Spoof version --
Flea fly
Flea fly mosquito
Calamine, calamine, calamine lotion
No, no more calamine lotion
Itchy, itchy, scratchy, scratchy. Ooh! I got one on my backy
Hit that mosquito; hit 'im with the bugspray Ps-ss-ss-st!

Very reminiscent of "Beast Day" as recorded by Chubby Checker and later Marsha Hunt.
