Delighted to announce the delayed appearance of the Spiers family in Glasgow on Sunday 18th September after being stymied by the dreadful weather last November.

Tom has been singing since the early 1960s and his fine, robust voice and fiddle playing are evidence of the debt he owes to his early influences (Jeannie Robertson, Jimmy MacBeath, Davie Stewart et al). His wife Margaret has heard the music for all that time but has only begun to sing out in the past few years, to the delight of those who have heard her. And daughter Emma is a recent surprise addition; her fine young voice shows her strong links to that wonderful North-East song tradition.

Laurie's Bar will open doors at 12.30pm for a one o'clock start (tickets £6/£4conc.), but booking is essential and places are already going fast -- so, to be sure you won't miss out, just click on the link below and follow through to Ballad Workshop.
It would be grand to see some Catters there1

We really need 200 weekends a year!

I'm already committed to a trad event elsewhere which from next year will move to late June so hopefully, ano domini permitting, I can get to next year's Ballad Workshop in Glasgow.

Dear Guest,
Actually, we have about 12 workshops a year -- mostly teaching events with two or three guests in addition -- and usually on the last Sunday of the month. Our programme is regularly updated on the Laurie's Acoustic Music Bar site.
But here are our dates for the rest of this session -- 30th Oct. (Hallowe'en theme)
                                                                                              27th Nov. (teaching event)
And three events during Celtic Connections in January 2012 as a counter-blast, on 22nd, 29th Jan. (with guest Brian Peters) and 5th Feb.
We finish the year with events on 26th Feb.
                                                            25th Mar.
                                                            29th Apr.
                                                            27th May
24th June -- at least one of which will have a guest.

Would be good if you wanted to come to one, but be sure to book through the clicky link on Laurie's site.

Pleased to say that Tom, Margaret and Emma Spiers will be bringing CDs with them (great range of material) for the 18th September -- and we already have several bookings for the Brian Peters event in January!

Nice to know that people still find song such a powerful medium.

And the good news is that our numbers for the day are very pleasing -- which will make our rare and very appropriate raffle prize a suitable reward for the lucky winner!
But there are still some places, so it would be nice to see a Mudcatter there. Just book by clicking on the link in the original post and following through to Ballad Workshop.

Just looking at the list of those attending this Sunday -- 75% of our audience are singers! Seems to me to be a proper recognition of real and rare talent, so we're all expecting a very special afternoon.
And there are still a few places left, if you want to find out what all the fuss is about. Please contact me via the clicky link above if you'd like more details, or if you wish to book your seat.

Just had confirmation from a friend that Tom et al did a superb set last night at the Rolling Hills Festival in the Scottish Borders, so they'll be in fine voice for tomorrow!
There are still a few places left, so don't hesitate but book yourself in by clicking on the link above to ensure your attendance.
Hoping to see some 'Catters there -- please introduce yourselves if you can manage through to Glasgow!

Great afternoon from Tom, Margaret and Emma -- smashing songs in interesting versions, coupled with deep knowledge and a real and justifiable pride in their north-east heritage. And some impressive contributions from the floor too.
So, grateful thanks to all concerned from an audience that left with a light in the eye and a lift in the step!
