My late father-in law had a "T" setting on his hearing aid. I think that my mother-in-law still does not know that he used to switch it to this setting to switch her off!

Leenia, I tell my women in the chorus to imagine a soap bubble on their tongue- don't let it pop! Then I tell them of the beautiful cathedral inside them, with the bubble floating there- yeah, we got resonance!

Leenia-- Yawning opens up the soft palate the same way. You just don't want too much so's you get a really covered tone. (Kindof woofy, like someone who doesn't know better trying to sing opera!)

Bill (and all), most people lose the high end with age. My kids would play this tone that I could not hear at all and said most folks over about 40 could not hear it. My daughter used to walk the halls of her high school and when she heard a monitor that was on standby after hours she would shut it off because it drove her nuts. Most teachers had no idea that they made noise when the screen went blank! Our generation is worse that previous ones a bit, but not as much as we think. Mostly we lost the high end earlier. (For me it was power tools and ramset tools)

This is not about hearing better, it's about singing better.

The best advice I ever got came from here. Pretend you have put hot food in your mouth and are too embarrassed to take it back out. Notice the way you open your mouth wide in the back to cool off the food.

Hold your mouth that same way when you sing.

You'll have to practice till you can open your mouth that way while producing consonants, but it can be done.

A new TV is not in my budget right now... (I do have graphic equalizers in my computer music-playing programs, and the setting looks like a ski-slope from lower left to upper right...) I used to route TV sound thru my hi-fi set, which had a small adjustment, but it is getting old too. If I really want to bother, I use headphones.

Yep... I have worked in several loud environments, and I expect my high end was damaged 35 years ago..

(I can hear a car door slam way down the block thru closed windows, but can't follow two women's voices in the next room)

Bill D, you might appreciate a sound setting we found on our new Vizio TV. There is a setting (I forget the name, just call it A for now) with what I can only call great hissing. To my husband, who has high-end hearing loss, it sounds normal but to me it "ssssoundssss likke people are sssspeakking with-th-th way ovvver-emphffasssizssed hhhigh-pittcch cconssonantsss." Clearly the high-end frequencies are seriously boosted on that setting, which might be just right to balance out the muting you experience. It's been about 2 weeks and I'm starting to get used to the hissy-setting. It's worth it compared to how things were with the prvevious TV, when we had a constant (friendly) battle with the volume, he wanted it up, I wanted it down.

Do all new TVs come with that kind of sound setting option? I wondered if they're appealing to aging boomers, not to mention younger folk who've grown up with too many hours of ear buds blasting music. Okay, come to think of it, probably helps a lot of folks damaged by this noise-polluted world.

Floppy hats and hands over ears? What's surprising? Look at bats ...and some foxes. They have it built in!
I have considered making a cardboard gadget to wear when watching TV, so I DON'T have to cup my ears or turn up the volume. (I hear low notes fine, but anything above 11,000 hz is muted)

I used to wear an "Indiana Jones" felt hat when "Up Kent County" in the woods years ago but my voice was okay back then so I never noticed it. Now, this revalation is kinda cool for me and, apparently, foggers has found it to be true as well.

I have been a peaked cap (baseball cap) wearer for years as I went bald years ago. I just might be a "Tilley Man" from now on. Especially when driving with the tunes cranked up... safety first eh?

I haven't got any wild breakthroughs to share, but I too found that a floppy brimmed hat has the same effect as ear-cupping. Maybe that's why so many of us folkies wear wide brimmed hats!

Ya know how cupping yer hand over yer ear can help ya hear yerself sing? Well, I just put on an old and now floppy Tilley hat and started to sing as I went about my business... it works much the same and nearly as well.

Maybe not amazing but I thought it was cool.

Anybody else got any amazing or weird (maybe as "stunned" as mine) "discoveries" to share?
