Subject: RE: Good tunes From: Smokey. Date: 07 Sep 11 - 07:53 PM I agree a good arrangement can make all the difference, Alex, but I also like to think a really good tune (folk/mock folk) should be able to stand on its own too, and imply its own backing. Not that I've anything whatsoever against 'arrangement' - far from it. |
Subject: RE: Good tunes From: Steve Shaw Date: 07 Sep 11 - 07:20 PM That saying was resurrected on TheSession by Dick's great mate Llig. Can't think why he didn't credit him. |
Subject: RE: Good tunes From: alex s Date: 07 Sep 11 - 07:15 PM With you on this one, Smokey. It's also true that a good arrangement can transform a simple tune into something special. For my money Phil Beer is a master at this. |
Subject: RE: Good tunes From: Smokey. Date: 07 Sep 11 - 05:52 PM I like to think there are, GSS. Of course, the player can be an important factor. A good player can often make a good tune from a mediocre one, and a bad enough player can certainly ruin a good tune to the point of effective disguise. |
Subject: RE: Good tunes From: The Sandman Date: 07 Sep 11 - 05:41 PM Yes. One sometimes wonders if there are any good tunes left that have not already been written. |
Subject: RE: Good tunes From: Smokey. Date: 07 Sep 11 - 05:37 PM Yes, it has some merit but at the same time I think that to purposely write a tune which always goes where it's least expected is probably a big mistake. On its own it's not a good basis for composition, but I agree that a good tune should ideally sound as though it couldn't have been written any other way. Any fool can write complicated unpredictable tunes - simplicity is a whole bit trickier. |
Subject: RE: Good tunes From: The Sandman Date: 07 Sep 11 - 04:41 PM I agree,It does have some merit. I found it on www session.org Can't remember where I saw it now or who said it,but I like it. |
Subject: RE: Good tunes From: GUEST,dom Date: 07 Sep 11 - 03:31 PM good quote, sort of makes sense, where's it from? |
Subject: RE: Good tunes From: Speedwell Date: 07 Sep 11 - 02:36 PM A good tune is a combination of many things that unlocks a special feeling for you. If it resonates then there's nothing like it. Therefore there in merit in this statement. It attempts to explain that special moment when music moves you. |
Subject: Good tunes From: The Sandman Date: 07 Sep 11 - 02:14 PM "When a good tune goes somewhere it goes to the least expected place, but after it's been there you get the feeling that there is nowhere else it could have possibly gone" Do people think there is any merit in this statement? |
