Until recently it was easy to buy a pack of salted peanuts. Now, manufacturers have decided to produce numerous foul flavoured, hard boiled, roasted and whatever, so it's necessary to sort through 28 different packs in our local Sainsbury's before finding my jumbo salted peanuts!!!

My teeth don't like peanuts any more but I liked the salted ones and never was fond of dry roasted ones.

I think the best though were the ones we called monkey nuts - just the peanuts in their shells. Can you still get them for human consumption anywhere?

Hmm. My wife gets them at our local Trader Joe's. They have various size bags of salted, lightly salted, or unsalted.

Cashews (gesundheit!), too.

I bought Trader Joe's cashews (sniffle) yesterday. Where do peanuts sold in the UK grow? We grow them here in the US, and perhaps have a more efficient pipeline.

Going by Wikepedia, peanuts are not grown anywhere in Europe. Biggest 3 producers in order are China, India and US.

But what about REAL salted peanuts. The machine producing them in Woolworths had a great PEANUT smell and you got a bag of them for sixpence, and the bag went transparent with the grease.....

A great favourite of my Grandma. Even after she was traumatised by an ostrich whipping her bag of nuts out of her hand, at Whipsnade Zoo.

If you want something really awful - just come down south where every street corner and gas station has a stand that sells boiled peanuts. They ARE salty - but they've been boiled to a mush like substance. Even if I do lose all my teeth I plan to steer clear of them.

I get them in the shell salted ... wife likes the unsalted version

I have peanut butter on cracked wheat toast every late eve as it reduces blood sugar and cresteralls. And it's better than eating peanuts - not just because of what Dan said (as they will mess up yer guts... eventually even if you don't have a problem) but because I am a single man and peanuts will make you ahhh, errr, welll, horny as a ten peckered hoot owl. Not that I can't handle that but there are only so many hours in the day eh? >;-)

Out of all the regional/local favorite foods, Georgia wins the "Gag Me" award hands down with the boiled peanuts so well described by Wesley. The smell is atrocious, the color (a brownish-black liquid with a green film) is disgusting, the texture is like mushy dog shit, and the taste....................Hell, I don't know how to describe THAT!

At Five Guys, a rapidly expanding US burger chain, there are peanuts in their shells in open boxes. Customers are welcome to help themselves to the peanuts while waiting for their orders. On the doors there are warning signs that inside there are peanuts in open boxes, and customers are not supposed to take peanuts out of the building. That's because some people have severe allergies to peanuts.

Goober peas. We can buy small bags of them in vending machines here and tins or jars of them in grocery stores. The ones in shells are often available in grocery stores too.

When I was little, I sometimes went with my mom to pick up my dad after his late shift at 7 PM. He'd often buy me 'redskin' peanuts which came out of a glass peanut-arium. You put your $.10 in, positioned your paper bag under the chute, pulled a handle, and watched the glistening hot peanuts fill the bag.

I stopped and bought boiled peanuts at a roadside stand one time as I was driving across Georgia. They were there in a 55-gallon drum, still boiling away. I really liked them.

Brought back memories of a colleague's diet in the 70's when a company supplied all her meals & snacks. I've never forgotten the 17 half peanut snack!

Imagine counting these little packets of peanuts for customers!

We used to buy them hot in paper bags at the pictures when I was a lad.
I buy them these days to make satay dipping sauce and sometimes to put in salads. On the front of the packet, in huge letters it says, helpfully, 'Salted Peanuts'. On the back, in letters almost too small to read, it says 'contains nuts'. 'Open carefully' would be far more useful.

Big Al reading your thread reminded me of a time when you could by freshly popped popcorn that way especially at seaside resorts. The smell was so inviting you just had to have some. Equally nice were the old 'proper' brown toffee apples the aroma of burnt toffee was delicious.

I haven't seen peanuts with the shells on (monkey nuts) for a long time. There was something theraputic about shelling a bag of nuts. My favourite way to eat peanuts is in peanut brittle, not so good for the tooth enamel though.

The best peanuts I ever had came from a farm in Texas. The son of the grower was in university with me. He had a large sack of them by his desk, and I always dropped in to talk about assignments (and stuff).
Large and sweet, in the shell, unsalted.

I reckon it's the Nanny State again, deciding that we shouldn't be having salt. Did you hear about the fish-and-chip shops that changed their salt dispensers for ones with ONLY ONE HOLE? I forget where it was, but really! And rotten Rich Tea biscuits with 'Less Fat'? Ghastly! Why can't we choose to ruin our health our own way, we're grown-ups after all.
PS Peanut butter, YUM YUM. The more clarty/claggy the better.

Clarted means dirty, as in 'all clarted up'. Related, I think, by way of the textural quality of the clart in question. Likewise 'clagged up', which implies a more coarsely granuled muck altogether.

i remember getting raw peanuts to feed chipmunks in the mts. and critters in the zoo.... and also raw spanish peanuts to put in peanut brittle.

airplanes used to serve peanuts, but now usually have pretzels instead.

there is a feed store near here that has a cast iron pan on the wood stove in the winter with hot roasted peanuts....

and I see them at a mexican food stand (a burrito truck or roach coach)

"ruin our health".    I won't speak to the UK, but in the US those of us who are at least partly trying once in a while to eat healthy wind up subsidizing the health costs of those who don't even try.


"Nanny State", it seems, may have to step in when people have no sense of self-preservation.

And, at least in the US, no danger of "Nanny State" trumping capitalism.   So McDonald's can continue to load its French fries with salt.   Etc. etc.   Jan, who's from the UK, managed to convince them to not put salt on hers when we were traveling through the 200-mile rainstorm in PA last weekend (having come back from doing things like singing sea songs in the pond, while swimming, and singing Louvin Brothers, doo-wop, Mamas and Papas etc til 4 AM).   But I had a few, and they still tasted salty.

Of course we usually avoid McD--Jan has told me what they are doing in the Amazon, etc.   But sometimes you have no choice, it seems.



The other thing is we just don't want to lose you salt and sugar addicts---who include a lot of wonderful musicians. Don't you guys realize that when you go in for a bypass or wind up in a wheelchair, that there might be a connection to diet (and exercise)?

Anyway, Jan has convinced me not to buy salted nuts anymore.   And I don't miss it.    I buy unsalted everything. And try to avoid processed food--which is loaded with salt. (But I do put salt on corn on the cob--can't imagine it otherwise).

That is a foolish warning. There are people who are allergic to nuts, some to peanuts and some to both. The difference is that nuts (leave it alone, Spaw) grow above ground and peanuts--the peanut, or groundnut or goober is a species in the legume (bean) family--grow below ground.

As Max Johnson pointed out though, it IS a silly warning. However, in a sue-crazy world, CYA is of paramount importance in the minds of corporations.

He ran a fruit and veggie wholsale company for years... every time I was over to his house, he would give me a big bag of peanuts out of site of my old man and tell me to hide them in Dad's car and then give me a bag when we were leaving. I was one fat little pup.

When I was living in South Carolina through most of 2007, I became a fan of "bald peanuts." Bald, of course, is the southern way of saying boiled. They are boiled in their shells in a pressure cooker. I don't know about whites, but blacks in the area ate them like there was no tomorrow. The guy I was working the most closely with was black and he brought me bald peanuts everyday.

It was funny because we were working with this cute little blonde gal and we'd eat bald peanuts and those obnoxious little franks that you get in those tins by Armour Starr--straight out of the can. She would just about vomit watching us.

My in-laws live in Georgia. One of the real hi-lites when we visit is getting boiled peanuts. Have to eat them right away, still hot, washed down with beer. I like getting the ones with four nuts in the pod, never see that in peanuts we get here.

When I first visited them 25 years ago there were several stands in the area, now I only know of one. Fortunately it is just down the road from their house. They live in the suburbs of Atlanta and the strip mall culture has taken over in a big way. Still a lot of rural areas around 25 years ago, not so much any more.

Bravo, Eliza! I get nuts (and peanuts) in the bulk packages (1 kg or so) unsalted and salt them myself, with a touch of sugar and lemon juice. Can't stand these diet nuts (at 88, outliving most of them).

In a bowl, put
1 teaspoon lemon juice
2/3 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon salt
Combine
Add 1 cup nuts.
Toss and set aside for 15 minutes.
Spread on cookie sheet and bake 15 minutes at 120C
(Do not over-brown).

We give jars of them away at Christmas.

Adjust, depending on type of nuts. You will get the feel of it after eating a bowl or two.

Peanuts also come from Africa, particularly Nigeria, where they are called groundnuts.

The Dutch word for peanut butter is "pindakaas"--literally, "peanut cheese."

Thank you for that recipe, Q, will try it soon. At our age, we've proved that things like butter, full-cream milk, cheddar cheese, salt, sugar etc etc haven't done us a bit of harm. In fact, I should think that these 'lite' low-fat' processed things are probably less healthy. I recently read that now 'THEY' have decided that a bit overweight in old age is better than thin! You have more resistance to germs and can survive illness better. Also, I read that butter is now seen as good for you, as are eggs. Wish they'd make up their blooming minds! Anyway, it's all down to your genetics. I take no notice at all and do what I like, and I'm still alive.

Cooked up butter chicken today. Lots of butter and cream (I use sour) in the sauce.

The Mayo Clinic had a note indicating butter and that M stuff are about equal.
I am not a dieter, but the Mayo recipes for the w-w are not too bad. None of the weird recommendations that are going around. And the amount of salt that is OK is more than I use in a day, even with the Tostito chips I like to nibble on. (Made right here in Alberta, with local grains. They have several plants around the U.S. and Canada).

I made bread-and-butter-pudding last night, old recipe of my mum's. LOTS of butter, brown bread, eggs, full cream milk, sugar and raisins. And we had it with cream! American recipes sound so delicious Q. I personally think smoking and drinking far too much are the worst things for health. And not getting fresh air or exercise. Gardening gives me both of those.

Have y'all peanut lovers ever tried Methodist peanuts? I am a convert. Was introduced by my friend Anna Jean Mayhew, who just published a fabulous book, The Dry Grass of August. When we catered a reading and reception for her, Claxton fruitcakes and Methodist peanuts were on the menu.

Worth travelling for. For those of you attending the Getaway, I'll bring some for you to try.
