Paul, just an assumption I'd made from comments made on this forum (and this thread!) indicating a high regard for the 'Pros' - and why not? But I'm very happy to be wrong!

"Enjoyed your set very much Gloria, one of the songs made me cry though much to the amusement of my husband."

Thanks "Guest".Not sure which song that might have been, but SIMMO7TS videoed many acts and this is my opener. If you then look at his channel you can see most of the booked artists.

Frank Lee wrote; 'Made me feel grateful to the concert-going public who buy tickets to watch 'Big Names' , allowing the festival to happen, and thus have a fringe where, from where I stand, real folk music happens. '
It's a fallacy Frank. The festival will happen whether any 'big names' are booked or not. Remember when Sidmouth wasn't going to happen? Remember when Beverley wasn't going to happen? This years Hull Shanty Festival was brilliant, one of the best we went to in 2011 despite its having been cancelled by the HUll Council.
Its not 'big names' that make a festival, in fact they are one reason why festivals don't happen as they leech more and more money out of a very small pot. Its the fringe and the small names who work for bugger all who make a festival coupled with very hard working dance teams giving the event a public face for next to no reward.

We called on our way north from Sheffield on Sat. evening. Enjoyed a lovely meal in The Black Horse, and then stayed at the sing/playaround. Yes, a lot of Beatles, Everley Bros. Eddie Cochrane, Donegan, etc..   But all nicely sung, and all-in-all a lovely mixture of allsorts delivered by folks sharing whatever 'floats their boat'. Made me feel grateful to the concert-going public who buy tickets to watch 'Big Names' , allowing the festival to happen, and thus have a fringe where, from where I stand, real folk music happens. There were singers like Ben Needham - I'd made a point of finding out his name - whose voice outclasses that of any male singer I know on the so-called 'folk' (but I prefer to call it showbiz) scene, sharing songs for the hell of it, and there were other great performers too. There was an electric piano, but sensitively played by all who used it; yes, 'there's as good a fish in the sea.....'

I had a look in at a few sessions on Saturday afternoon, I heard more Beatles songs than I'd heard all year.

Enjoyed your set very much Gloria, one of the songs made me cry though much to the amusement of my husband.

Other highlights were Chumbawamba, Roger Davis and Dave Vermond.

Did Sandra from My Sweet Patootie get her fiddle back? I know that they got the electronic gear back from the police after the thieving gits sold it to high gear in Leeds.

The fiddle was taken into Hobgoblin but they were suspicious and asked the man to bring it back the next day to see the fiddle expert, that was before Sandra had called them and they realised it was hers.

The meet the artist session with them was surreal with the audience encouraging Terry to answer the phone call from the police and all of us hoping it was good news.

I was playing there yesterday, but went over on saturday too.I was particularly impressed by Chumbawamba - partly because I didnt expect to be.I've never heard them before, not even their "hit", but their reputation suggested a severe banging around the head with derivative political sloganeering. In fact, as most of the audience probably knew already, they are entertaining, relaxed performers, fine harmony singers with some of the most original inventive songwriting I've heard for a long time.I loved the song about George Melly. This was in the Methodist Hall, where I also heard Urban Folk Quartet for the first time.Very impressive - especially the percussionist, and they certainly know how to involve an audience.Very clever musical arrangements - although they did one piece, saying "no drinking here, but if you'd had a few you'd go wild for this one" which led into an abortive assault on an irish tune and sounded like two fiddles having a nervous breakdown, a ghastly bloody racket.Odd really - because otherwise they were brilliant.
Other people I heard - John Kirkpatrick, predictable - i.e. superb; and my friends Mick and Susie Darling on good form in the Horse And Farrier with their traveller songs.
Just a few people I enjoyed seeing at Otley (there were also one or two I didnt enjoy) - we got some serious weather at times, so it must have impacted on the outdoor events - but good for those of us playing inside, like me in Kork's as the heavens opened and the place got packed out - hot and steamy.

I have checked back twelve months on the Mudcat and there does not appear to be a thread on this festival that starts on the 15th of September. Here is the link to the festival website http://www.otleyfolkfestival.com/
