There used to be a folk night on Wednesday at the cricket pavilion in Farnsfield.

also in Farnsfield there used to be a folk club at The Red Lion.

Neither of these were widely known by the folk world.

If you can get to Southwell early in the day - take in the cathedral Southwell Minster, the old workhouse, the georgian houses, the tearoom (with ducks) at Bleasby.

There is a pub in Southwell called the Bramley Apple. Because bramley cooking apples originated in those parts. I used to gig there , bout 10 years ago. It used to have a good reputatio for food.

I also used to love the bacon rolls at Waitrose supermarket cafe in Newark. packed with with Canadian bacon.

Take a picture of the castle from the bridge in the town. It was beseiged in the civil war -English civil war of course (in the 164o's)

Jacqui.c - sorry, looks like I'll be dog-sitting on Thursday, so I won't be able to go to Southwell after all. Apologies for that. If you go yourself, it's at the Dumbles pub, Westhorpe, Southwell, NG25 0ND. Have a good Christmas.

I'm sorry for firing off at you, Big Al. I guess your generalisation was not meant to be offensive.

Having nattered many an evening away in the company of two of the NUM's best, Lawrence Daly and Mick McGahey, one-time FBU general secretary Ken Cameron and others of similar ilk - all great trade-unionists - I'd be happy to enlighten GSS somewhere else.

this is why I am so seldom on Mudcat these days. I get so tired of these sad souls who seem to have nothing to do than to stir up trouble. They may think they are being clever but I don't and it pisses me off when a thread like this gets hijacked by those with a political agenda. Just go away and be miserable somewhere else and leave decent human beings to be able to communicate with each other without this sort of nonsense.

OK, vent over.

Terry, if you do decide to go out next week - any chance of a lift if I can get a late pass?

Tidied up a bit for you, lassie! Have a great visit! --mudelf

Some Anon Guest Claus 4 man - stirring the shit.

Me and Dick are the injured parties.

Here is a page that may help out with Sunday night - worksop isn't too far - neither are wextbridgeford or beeston - both suburbs of Nottingham City. The Musician on Clyde Street Leicester is about 49 minutes down a46 - given a clear run and they often have good stuff on.

I think its just a joke Kendall. Notts miners didn't support their union in the great strike of 1983. Thus helping Margaret Thatcher to another umpteen years of victory. The strike was politically motivated - an attempt to unseat the Tories at a time when Labour was too weak to do it democratically.

Quite a few of the Notts miners were not scabs, and damn few miners find their way into the rather sedate company of Newark and Bingham folk clubs.

Glad you think and speak well of us, Kendall - we appreciate it.

I've met many people in the UK and quite a few in the Newark area. They have treated me like a relative, not a scab in the whole bunch.
When you call someone a nasty name you are saying far more about you than them.

I had a great time at Gainsborough on Friday - they are always such a welcoming crowd and there are some terrific performers there. I am very lucky to have been able to hit a number of folk clubs in different parts of the UK and the USA and generally find the locals to be welcoming and generous to strangers turning up wanting to sing.

Many thanks to all those who have made me so welcome over the past few years.

OK - I got to Newark yesterday and am staying home tonight. Weather permitting I'm hoping to get to Gainsborough tomorrow night and then have family committments over the weekend. Out, probably, next Wednesday and then heading to Hertford with a friend overnight on Thursday next - not sure my 'mother', or my grandson, will be happy if I spend too many more evenings out but we'll see.......

Backwoodsman - I'll let you know what late passes I'm allowed in Newark. :0) Hopefully I can make it to a few venues.

OldNic - Wish I could make it to your singaround but I'll still be in London then. However, I do make it to Newark a couple of times a year and would love to get to this another time if I'm there at the right time.

Terry - see my PM.

You know about Gainsborough FC, it's on Friday 14th Dec. Lincoln FC (at the Unison Club, Beaumont Fee) is on Frridays 7th and 21st Dec.

Its worth the drive over to Nottingham on Wednesday to the Carrington Triangle Folk Club at The Gladstone on Loscoe Road in Carrington. As well as the music, the beer is EXCELLENT - try the Nottingham E.P.A. and the club serves Grenville's (free) Veg. Curry during the break - a treat in itself ! Also, in case you are looking for something nearer on Friday, Bingham FC is just down the A46 from Newark, where they meet in The Town Pavilion; just "Google" "Bingham Folk Club" and take a look.

there used to be a folk club at the Cricket Club every Friday night, I think. don't know if its still there. Look up sairz ingram on facebook - she had a folk club in the vale of belvoir which is less than ten miles away from Newark. If you find the A52 it goes to Nottingham and derby which contain all kinds of open mics and sessions, and of course folk clubs.

Mansfield Brown Cow folk club meets every Tues- there was an unexpected closure of the pub but it then re-opened. The club has a facebook page for the most up to date info on venue and what is on. It is truly one of the best folk clubs in the country - great welcome, always worth a visit.
