Anyone seen it? Russian Language film made by Russian TV - Subtitled in English, based on the story by Nikolai Gogol which in turn was based on events in the 16th cetury cuminating in the Russio/Polish war.

Fabulous film, and, IMO, faree better than the Hollywood version with Yul Bryner in the leading role - Although I did enjoy that one too. This was just better. Anyroads...

Couple of Musical questions for anyone familiar with Russian and, in particular, Cossack music. I was brough up in the Orthodox religion - My Grandad (Deda) was a Russian Orthodox Priest and a Kuban Cossack. There was always lots of music in the house, both religious and secular, but being in England I don't know if our household was typical. The church music was always sung by the whole congrgation - My Grandmother (Baba) had a wonderful sopranoo voice. But in the film the church music was all male - Would this have been more typical?

Plus - There was a trio playing in the house of the hero early on - A fiddle , A huge thing like a Mandola or similar and a drum like a Bodhran - Anyone know what the drum and big stringed thing would have been (Nope - It was not a Balalika)

Finaly - film recommendation. Get the DVD - Brilliant.
