So, have you heard the joke about the three holes in the ground?

...

...

No? Well, well, well.

(Sorry, couldn't resist :)

Pat Wictor recorded it again in a nice 3-part vocal arrangement as part of Brother Sun on their self-titled 2011 CD. heard them recently; great performance.

My transcription from the recording on Spotify.

WELL, WELL, WELL
Written by Bob Dylan & Danny O'Keefe
As sung by P. P. Arnold on Steve Howe's album "Portraits of Bob Dylan" (2010)

The man who stole the water will swim forevermore,
But he'll never reach the land on the golden shore.
That faint white light will haunt his heart
Till it's only a memory lost in the dark.

Dig a hole in the ground all the way down to hell
Till there ain't no more water in the well, well, well.
When you're down on your knees with nothing left to sell,
Dig a little deeper in the well, well, well.

The water used to run so clear and so fresh.
Now poison creeps through it that withers the flesh.
The man sells us back our water like we're fish on his line,
Trying to turn our blood into his wine.

Dig a hole in the ground all the way down to hell
Till there ain't no more water in the well, well, well.
When you're down on your knees with nothing left to sell,
Dig a little deeper in the well, well, well.

Well, well, well

Take care of your body like you take care of your soul.
Take care you don't dig yourself into a hole.
Till you've paid the price, you don't know the worth
Of the air and the water, the fire and the earth.

Dig a hole in the ground all the way down to hell
Till there ain't no more water in the well, well, well.
When you're down on your knees with nothing left to sell,
Dig a little deeper in the well, well, well.

well, well, well

The man who stole the water will swim forevermore.
But he'll never reach the land on that golden shore.
When you're down on your knees with nothing left to sell,
Dig a little deeper in the well, well, well.

Well, well, well

I found the following at a web site of unreleased Dylan songs. There were no lyrics, so it may be up to someone with one of the albums listed to write down the words. The Steve Howe web site claimed to have a portion or all of the song to listen to, but I could not get it to work on my old computer.

WELL WELL WELL Bob Dylan/Danny O'Keefe, 1996 N? Gil Walker - "While the song is credited to Dylan and Danny O'Keefe, it has only been released on Maria Muldaur's "Fanning The Flames" album (1996). The guy I heard about the song from is also a film/music critic for a local group of weekly newspapers; he told me he asked Maria about the song at a recent club appearance, and she told him, that, as far as she knew, no one else had released a version of the song. Where did she get it? She said she just called up Dylan one day and asked him if he had anything on hand she could put on her new record - so he sent it to her! Unfortunately, she didn't say (or John didn't ask) whether she got sheet music, a Dylan demo, or something else to work from." AF- Since Gil sent me this information, cover versions of WELL WELL WELL have also been released by David Lindley and Wally Ingram on their September 1998 album "Twango Bango Deluxe" (Topic Records) and by Steve Howe with P.P. Arnold as guest vocalist on his June 1999 album "Portraits Of Bob Dylan" (Eagle Records UK/Cleopatra Records US). It's now reported that on the demo tape the song is performed by co-writer Danny O'Keefe, not Bob, so there is no circulating Dylan version

Anika,

You should just keep posting to the first thread. Perhaps our handyman, Joe Offer will merge these threads together. Your additional lyrics help to clarify which song you seek. I searched the Bob Dylan Lyric Site to no avail. The song is not in the book Bob Dylan Lyrics 1962-1985, either. I think I am tapped out at this point for ideas.

Where are those Bob Dylan junkies of yesteryear. Did we scare them all off discussing "What is folk"?

The lyrics that I am looking for ( Well, Well, Well)sung by Maria Muldaur and Mavis Staples and written by Bob Dylan, begins like this:

A man who stole the water Will swim forever more, But he'll never reach that land on that golden shore. That faint white light, Will haunt his heart, He is only a memory, Lost in the dark.

Chorus; Dig a hole, dig a hole, Come away down the hill, Til there ain't no more water, In the well, well, well.
