CURRENT SCHEDULE:                   NEW SCHEDULE:
11p Sat - 7a Sun                                  8:30a - 4:30p Mon-Fri

11p Sun - 7a Mon                     No required weekends,
                                                 no required overnights
6p Tues - 7a Wed

6p Wed - 7a Thurs



1) the commute is the same, just a different direction.

2) Hours are MUCH more suited to my other projects, which are mostly weekend-focused (busking, performing, clowning, etc).

3) The real killer in my current schedule is Saturday nights into Sunday mornings... get home at 7:45am, leave for church at no later than 9:15, get home from church around 12:30 and have to go right back to sleep for an 11p shift that night.

The only catch here is that the new job CANNOT wait for me to give two weeks notice; I'd be starting immediately. What do I do? For $.050 cents less than I am currently making, I can have the shift I want and my evenings and weekends free, but I have to make a serious decision quickly and don't want to offend anyone or burn any bridges. Help!

Ain't advice, just an observation.

Being in a church doesn't make you a Christian any more than being in a garage makes you a mechanic.

A sincere apology to your current employer with the offer of working the Saturday overnight until he finds a replacement. That's what I would do.

SINS nailed it. Honesty and doing what you can to help your former employer. You might even offer to work a Saturday or two for free just to show that you are grateful... to a point.

Take the new job. That old schedule will be very hard for your family. And if you have been unemployed for a while, you have to do what is best for your family and not worry about offending anyone. If he can't get anyone to replace you, perhaps you could pick up a bit of evening moonlighting with him for a while. mg

What Sins said, except make it "until you can hire someelse or (date of your choice but definitely not ending before your notice would have,) whichever comes first.

Don't do what was recently done to me, however, unless you are willing to burn bridges with even the most understanding of bosses/companies. My only and essential administrative support staff just quit without proper notice. My company paid her "jack shit" for the work and skill level required, she was offered an unsolicited job at twice the money, but to take the job, she had to start immediately. She had to choose between conflicting values and commitments to her family, not to mention the need to pay the rent. She offered to work evenings for a couple of hours and on her one day off during the work week to do what she could to keep my little department afloat until I could find a replacement. My company has a policy that people who quit without proper notice are not eligible for rehire. It is very conceivable that at some point in the future she will want or need to return to my company - the largest employer in the area. I went to bat for her with HR regarding eligibility for rehire. 7 days later I arrive at work to find she had left her badge, key and brief note saying sorry, I can't keep working part-time, find some one else to do the billing that must be done by 5 o'clock that same day.    I'm pretty sure what happened, more or less sequentially, was she felt quite bad about leaving full-time with no notice, did not see she had a choice (she didn't, and we had talked about that) and then promised what she really wasn't willing to deliver in terms of working full time at the other job plus 12-15 hours per week in my department for another 4-6 weeks, and was too embarrassed and ashamed to at least tell me she couldn't do it. What happened was she offered those part time hours as a way to assuage her conscience, (with no pressure from me to do so, but with definite appreciation from me,) then couldn't deliver and rather than own up to that simply ran.

I personally wish her well and hope this new job works out for her and lasts. If it doesn't, however, she has made choices that have caused some doors to close and lock behind her.

I went ahead and took the new job. I talked briefly with my (now former) supervisor, and while he was definitely disappointed, he made no effort to shame or berate me; he simply requested that I make arrangements to have my uniforms, etc returned to the company's offices. He only wanted to know what the deal-maker (deal-breaker, in his case) was. I told him it was the better schedule, which is almost 100% of the whole matter (the other reasons were a poor location in a rotten neighborhood, and basically inept and unsavory characters as co-workers and clients.

In short, I do believe that if I contacted him at some later date and needed work, it would be at least more likely than not that I would be able to work for his company again.

My pastors would totally have understood if I was no longer able to attend services, but the schedule and the location and the more familiar commute (lots of shortcuts that I knew already, as opposed to places where one DOESN'T want to get lost at night) were just too good to pass up.

As it stands right now, I've got at least a full 2-week paycheck coming in from the old job right as I will need it, and it falls where a pay period with the new job would be, so there won't be any lapse in income as far as I can tell.

All in all, after one day at the new place, seems to have been a good decision. Time will tell the overall tale, but I am optimistic.

So far, at the new job, I am sitting on my duff doing nothing much. I am, unfortunately, in charge of 'crowd control' at the temporary offices of a county disaster relief program. They were expecting larger numbers of people to come in and apply for benefits at once, but it has been VERY slow these two days. The county employees are all decent, laid-back people, so they just sat me in a chair and told me to hang out and be as helpful as I could to those arriving, which I have.

The real adventure will be at the end of next week, when this temporary office is closed. I have to wonder where I'll be posted next. I can almost guarantee that it will be a LOT better than the crime-infested ghetto I was almost stuck in with the old outfit.

In the meantime, I have gotten some responses from people who want to possibly join my vaudeville-themed street act, I have gotten out and busked (at the diocesan cathedral near me, no less!) and am looking toward some performances at the end of the month.
