a BC it help poor me does seem right Jim. (I didn't bother with the rest of the song, but a quick listen with your words sounded OK).

Regarding BC, I'm pretty sure it refers to the BC powder I linked at 10:04. According to the article it was mostly associated with the relief of headaches and many people referred to it incorrectly as BC Headache Powder.

From: Jim Dixon

Here's another version:

PNEUMONIA BLUES
As sung by Lightnin' Hopkins

Whoa, you know, I'm achin' all over now, baby.
You know, I b'lieve I got a pneumonia this time.
Whoa, you know, I'm achin' all over now, baby.
You know, I b'lieve I got a pneumonia this time.
You know, my head hurtin' so bad,
Till I'm almost to go blind.

Ha' mercy!

Whoa, you know I'm achin' all over now, baby.
That pain done come down in my side.
Whoa, you know I'm achin' all over.
Pain done come down in my side.
Whoa, I b'lieve it's the pneumonia.
Po' Lightnin' just can't be satisfied.

I hear a few words differently:

SICK FEELIN' BLUES
As sung by Lightnin' Hopkins

Oh, I'm achin' all over.
Whoa, man, I b'lieve I got the pneumonia this time.
Whoa, I'm achin' all over.
You know, I b'lieve I got the pneumonia this time.
Yeah, you know, my head it hurt me.
Whoa, Lord, I'm almost to go blind.

Whoa, you know I laid down last night,
Head hurtin' so bad I couldn't hardly see.
Oh Lord, have mercy.
Oh Lightnin' couldn't hardly see.
Yeah, you know, I sent and got a aspirin(e), it wasn't no good,
Boy, but a BC it help poor me.

[I don't know what a BC is either.]

Thanks, Mick. I would not hNote that this song also goes by the name 'Pneumonia Blues'.

Lightnin Hopkins

Whoa, you know I'm achin' all over
You know I believe I got a pneumonia this time
Whoa, you know I'm achin' all over, now baby
You know I believe I got a pneumonia this time
Yeah, you know my head hurt me so bad
Till I'm almost to go blind

They were in my original post 08:07:

Yeah, you know I sit and got an aspirin(e), it was no good,
Aww, but a B.C. ain't help for me

(That was in the version on youtube that I linked above. There were some minor differences - and/but/oh, that kind of thing - with your other words).

I've downloaded the audio and processed it a bit and still can't do any better than the lines I gave above.

However, see this wikipedia article on BC Powder, an over-the-counter remedy (aspirin and caffeine), principally for headache relief, available from 1906 from Five Points Drug Company, Durham NC. I think this is what is being referred to and that my two lines are pretty much correct.

That'd be a big help. Mick. I have listened to the ending at least a dozen times. I don't know what it is, but I do know what it ain't, and it ain't what I posted above.

On this recording Sick-Feeling Blues, the clearest of the versions on youtube I think, the last two lines sound like:

Yeah, you know I sit and got an aspirin(e)*, it was no good,
Aww, but a B.C. ain't help for me

* aspirin pronounces as if it had a final e.

I've no idea what a BC might be, but possibly abbreviations for an aspirin brand.

I'm not completely certain about the first half of the last line; if I've got time later I'll try and process the audio a bit to see if there's anything better.

Note that this song also goes by the name 'Pneumonia Blues'.

Lightnin Hopkins

Whoa, you know I'm achin' all over
You know I believe I got a pneumonia this time
Whoa, you know I'm achin' all over, now baby
You know I believe I got a pneumonia this time
Yeah, you know my head hurt me so bad
Till I'm almost to go blind

Whoa, you know I went home last night
Hurtin' so bad I couldn't hardly see
Oh Lord, have mercy
Oh Lightnin' couldn't hardly see
Yeah, you know I since got aspirin, it was no good
What man but a beast in Hell, poor me

[Romeo, I am not satisfied with the last two lines above. I will look further. Remember, often blues singers change even their own lyrics depending on the mood they're in, the take they're doing, etc.]

Anyway, I'll look some more. But for now I hope that helps.

Blind Lemon Jefferson

I'm achin' all over, baby, b'lieve I got the pneumonia this time
I'm achin' all over, baby, b'lieve I got the pneumonia this time
An' it's all on account of that low-down gal of mine
[ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsfreak.com/b/blind+lemon+jefferson/pneumonia+blues_20661485.html ]
Slippin' round the corners, running up alleys too
Slippin' round the corners, running up alleys too
Watching my woman trying to see what she goin' do

Sat out in the streets one cold, dark, stormy night
Sat out in the streets one cold, dark, stormy night
Trying to see if my good gal going to make it home all right

Wearin' B.V.D.'s in the winter, prowling 'round in the rain
Wearin' B.V.D.'s in the winter, prowling 'round in the rain
Runnin' down baby, give me this pneumonia pain

I hear you. I was just checking because too many people ask for lyrics they could easily translate themselves but are too lazy to do that. Now I know it's a language difference I'd be glad to help, Romeo.

Do you have difficulty either writing or hearing? Because you posted to a very clear rendition of the song on Youtube asking the same question. If you have a disability I would be glad to help; otherwise, not.

Too many unnamed GUESTS speaking amongst themselves here confuse readers. Please select a moniker for yourself and use it consistently, especially if you see that there are already unnamed guests posting to a thread. And be polite!
