Subject: Tech: Stupid tech question re' task bar
From: katlaughing

I don't remember telling my PC to hide the taskbar and clock which both show at the bottom of my screen. I guess it's the "task bar;" It has START, the clock and other icons for virus alerts, etc.

I've looked at the properties by right clicking on it, and as far as I can see, it supposed to show it. I cannot find any OPTIONS in firefox nor google.

Help, please?

thanks!

kat

Have you checked in control panels? If you're on windows, click the orb that is round and has a four-coloured icon in it that looks like a flag waving in the breeze. When that opens, put taskbar in the search thingy and it'll take you to a screen where you can change whatever needs to be changed.

Instructions

Things You'll Need

A computer running windows 98 or newer.

1 Right-click on the taskbar and if the there is a check mark by the words "Lock The Taskbar" click it so there is no longer a check mark by it. If there is not a check mark simply continue to step 2.

2 Left-Click and hold anywhere on the taskbar that is free space (anywhere without an icon or button). While clicking on the taskbar with the left mouse button drag the taskbar to the side of the screen that you want it to appear on.

3 After you have moved your taskbar and are happy with its location right-click on it and click the words "Lock The Taskbar" so that the check mark appears next to the words.

Thanks, Bruce, but no luck. It shows at the bottom where I want it and the taskbar is locked, but as soon as i connect to the internet, it is hidden by whatever i have up, i checked Properties and told it to show up on top layer over any page i may have up. i'm really puzzled at not finding any options in firefox. wondering what happened to them, too,

I think your answer is in Windows, not in your browser.

When you right click on the taskbar, did you select "Lock the Taskbar?" There's another box for "auto-hide the taskbar" that might accidentally be selected? You get this dialog box by right clicking the task bar then clicking the Properties link at the bottom.

Poke around in there.

Just found the following:

Menu bar is missing | Troubleshooting | Firefox Help

Google that, Kat.

Try clicking F11 in Firefox - you may have it set to full screen. F11 toggles this on and off.

I've had the task bar do strange things from time to time, I just reset the settings and it works again.
Right click anywhere on the task bar and select properties, re do the settings and apply.

newport boy, that seems to have done it, thanks!

SRS, that's what was puzzling me. I had right-clicked and did lock the taskbar and made sure it said to show, not show, yet it still was hidden.

Thanks, everyone.

I have a very large monitor to use several browser windows at once so I use the little box/double box icon in the upper right corner of my browser to resize it. I rarely use it full-screen, and if you click the double box when it is in the full-screen mode it reveals little lines at the corner that you can use to drag and resize and place the window.

Good - I only knew this because I use F11 in Firefox all the time on my AAO netbook. It makes best use of the 1024x600 screen.

Thanks to whoever it was that suggested trying Control Panel. My computer kept hiding the 'Safely Remove Hardware' button and the Volume button. On Control Panel I unchecked a box that said 'Hide inactive icons,' and my computer is handier now.

I once managed to lose the taskbar, and found I had inadvertently dragged it down to the bottom of the screen. Try 'pulling it up' with your mouse, from the bottom edge of the screen.

The clue was that this happened when kat connected to the internet - ie, opened Firefox. When Firefox is in full-screen mode, it does just that - uses every bit of the screen to display the webpage. There's no title bar, menu bar, status bar or Windows info - just the webpage.

It's invaluable for viewing complicated pages on a netbook screen, and because it's such a quick F11 toggle it doesn't disrupt your other screen settings - unless you've activated it accidentally, of course :-)
