Subject: Mudcat Registration
From: Joe Offer
Date: 15 Sep 11 - 03:18 AM

I haven't received any membership applications at my e-mail address, joe@mudcat.org, for about three days, and I usually get three to five a day. I think my Mudcat e-mail isn't working. If you'd like to become a member of Mudcat, please contact me at the e-mail address below.
Thanks.

-Joe Offer, Mudcat Archivist-

My e-mail is fixed. Please contact me at joe@mudcat.org

I'm one of these people whose GUEST status is mostly define by the fact that I have to sign in everytime I use the site; I might sign in (from time to tme) to check on PMs, or include more HTML in my posts, but generally speaking I think PMs are a bad idea - I've had some bad ones in my time, from people you'd think would have more sense; one should only write bad things on running water; or at least on open forum!

If Mudcat were ever to set itself up as a proper forum and ditch the God-like hero-cult sycophantic crap I'd be only too happy to be a member because (God-like hero-cult crap & attendant cloying sycophancy notwithstanding) Mudcat is a great place to be - great resource, great archives, just a shame to think it all exists at the whim of one person really. I saw that happen with the old Harvest Home / Woven Wheat Whispers folk community - soon as the self-styled Lord o' Misrule got bored with it, down it went & we lost a very precious resource, however so flawed it's overall - er - concept...

So, if Mudcat was a proper community, with proper membership answerable to a proper elected committee, with no invisible MODS, and a far more savvy notion on what constituted FOLKLORE, and actually lived up to its hype as a a community of musicians, historians and enthusiasts that collect and discuss traditional folk and blues songs, folklore, lyrics, instruments then I'd be going along with the members only policy as mooted by several in the past. As it stands, I come here for the crack & the crack alone (note spelling there BTW: crack rather than craic - as a native born Northumbrian (however so Oirish in my ancestry) it will always be crack).

That was excellently put Suibhne!
Many forums have the "dictator"/owner format [unfortunately], and I guess only time will tell if that happens to me here.
I have been banned from an excellent guitar forum TWICE for offending the owner/dictator, although my posts still live on there.
I have a lot to explore and learn here and will be doing so in the coming weeks.
A question: Is traditional hardcore country considered a folk genre now that Nashville's output of "country" is mainly recycled Byrds,Eagles, etc. ?

Knowing how past BB's treat "off topic", I think I will start a thread about what "Traditional" country music spans as a genre.
Will keep this thread pure relating to troubles registering on Mudcat.
If there is interest, I will see you there.

"...with proper membership answerable to a proper elected committee..."

Funny...first thought in my head was the old line "A camel is a horse designed by a committee."

There are quite a lot of folks here who feel like this is a FINE community....and one of the more free & open & tolerant places around. That very openness has led 'some' to abuse the privilege....leading to more rules than they would like. Kind of a circle, hmmm?

As Popeye the Sailorman said: "I yam what I yam!"

The average lifespan of a camel is 45 years , a horse's 35 years.

My gripes are pretty puny when compared to the joy I get from this forum; it's like - oh - England! Love the place, love the people, but there's always something to mutter about - and always someone suggesting if-you-don't-like-it-here-then-leave; or else go start up one of my own...

I don't understand the complaint that logging in is too much trouble.

If you're using a home computer, you can log in once and stay logged on forever. That's what I do. (You might not want do that if you share a computer with another Mudcatter, however.)

If you're using a business computer, and you're worried that your boss might object to the amount of time you spend on Mudcat during business hours, then I can understand you wanting to cover your tracks—but then you need to take a lot more precautions than just avoiding logging in.

I have experimented with public computers in a public library, and I believe cookies are automatically deleted when I end my session. That means I still have to log in, but I don't need to worry about logging out. I suppose not all public computers work the same way, though. I'd be interested in hearing about other people's experiences.

I think I have had some problems when experimenting with multiple browsers however. Like, if I log in on one browser, and then log off in a different browser, the browsers can get confused about whether I'm logged in or not. I don't remember the details; I did those experiments a long time ago.

Anyway, I suspect that if those who have had problems logging in, or staying logged in, could describe their problems in a little more detail, we might be able to come up with a solution.

Maybe this isn't the best thread to do that, though.

I KNOW that some occasionally get their browser set to reject all cookies, or to delete cookies upon exit. Modern browsers have so many settings that it is easy to accidently click the wrong setting.

To make it perfectly and completely perfectly clear, Joe has two email addresses.

His mudcat email address - joe@mudcat.org - appears to be not working at the present time. This is the address that would normally receive mudcat related messages, including applications for new memberships, forgotten passwords, and other mudcat bizziness.

He has gratuitouslygraciously volunteered the use of his Joe address for the correspondence that would normally be conducted via his mudcat address, pending the rebirth, reconstruction, re-erectionresurrection, or other form of recovery for the usual mudcat one.

What is not perfectly and completely clear - - if he's using his un-mudcat email addy for mudcat correspondence, does that mean he's working "out of the office," and are we goin' to have to pay him a travel allowance and overtime wages in excess of his normal extragevant compunsation? Does he know that mudcat travel policy prohibits staying in a motel that charges more than $6/hour (double-occupancy)? Will he send us all a post card while he's "out of it?"

John

I need help. I keep trying to reset my cookie which I have managed to do in the past. But of course I have forgotten my password. When I enter my email address and click, I get the message that my password has been sent to me, but it is not in my Inbox or Spam box. I have tried three times. The first time I also tried my other email address and got the message that it was wrong. I figure by now the moderators must be tired of trying to figure out who the GUEST is who keeps forgetting to identify herself. (Not all such comments have been made by me, though, and when I realize I've posted without identifying myself I go back and identify myself in another post.) What do I do now?

I'll add to what Ebbie said... to refresh a tad... she answered this from another post... "So, if Mudcat was a proper community, with proper membership answerable to a proper elected committee,..."

Here's my answer : Mudcat is what it is because Max allows everyone and anyone, to a point actually beyond decorum, to speak their minds without "committee" approval. Freedom of speech if I can paraphrase my own assessment. No personal attacks and don't be a fuckin asshole... again, I am parapharsing my own assessment.

Seems kinda simple to me. Play nice and if ya don't the other kids on the playground will call you an asshole and kick your ass. Works for me. As a matter of fact, I think it's perfection.. I think it's RATHER proper because the membership and non-membership answer to a FAR greater committee. The other kids.

Mudcat has seen "them" come and go. There are some at present and they make fools of themselves and are essentially innocuous, like buzzing flies. Some get swatted. Some still buzz around even after being politely, and impolitely, shooed away. But, some of those flies provide a service by challenging US to be a committee.

Say what you want, but, the reason you get to say it is... simply... Max.

Thanks yet again Max.

I know I could have emailed Joe, but of course it is nice to know his Mudcat address is working again. However, I posted here because I hoped someone else might suggest something that would work before he had to bother. He emailed my password to me. The next time I lose my cookie, I will probably have forgotten my password again, but I hope when I request my password through the steps posted in the FAQ section it really does arrive in my Inbox. Leave it to me to have a problem like this! Perhaps the best thing would be for my cookie to disappear so often that I could remember it from one time until the next!

Don't worry about imposing, ChanteyLass. I don't mind doing the password and registration work at all. It's a nice opportunity to chit-chat with people, and Jeff semi-automated the process for me so it isn't much work.
