"slavery" thread - you know the one: currently up near the top of the BS threads since a very few, UK based participants - including one of the nastiest "guests" to yet appear on this site - have taken it over to hurl racist, sexist and generally nasty abusive slurs against each other, using the Mudcat to do it.

Now I'm well aware that BS topics aren't to do with music. But fer goodness' sake, this is a music *site*. Why the hell do we have to put up with these idiots using *our* site to pour out their vitriol about the issue of UK travellers? Gypsies, pikeys, whatever you want to call them, we have had enough abuse.

Max, F+S, ACT PLEASE! get rid of these idiots!

This is the thread that needs killing.
Who are you to decree what consenting, adult members discuss within a thread that you need never look into?

I don't get the logic there, Keith - someone suggests that a thread should be killed, you object to that suggestion as an attack on free speech and call for this thread to be killed...

Isn't there a touch of "All Cretans are liars and I am a Cretan" in that?

Mudcat has always been a fairly gentle, tolerant community.

Keith A: you are not conforming to our standards. You don't have any "right" - even if you are an "adult" - to throw your weight about and introduce that sort of language and those sort of attitudes - to what is fundamentally a site devoted to discussions about, or related to - music, specifically folk or blues music. Or things that might, potentially be of interest to people who follow that drum.

Mcgrath: thanks for pointing out explicitly exactly what is wrong with at least some of the people who are currently posting to and defiling the "Slavery..." thread.

I am sure that the person who started the thread is as horrified as I am by the uses to which it is now being put.

Moderators: I've asked in the thread itself, I am begging now: get rid of the slavery thread asap.

And to the rest of the Mudcatters : time you posted here! let the
bigots know what you think! I am sure those of you who care about either the travellers or those affected by their lifestyle can find a way to debate those issues without the use of violent or abusive language. And if you can't, there's no place for you here...

I'm in no way a supporter of censorship, but I do have to agree with Fossil.

The problem here is a small group - let's call them, for want of a better name, 'The Usual Suspects' - who take over certain threads and effectively exercise their own form of censorship over what other people may and may not give by way of opinion.

These people are appalling wreckers and, by stinking up the forum the way they do, they deter many others from expressing their views and debating on here for fear of hysterical rants about 'racism', 'sexism', 'bigotry' etc. being unleashed on them.

It's a kind of "I'm a better person than you because I'm not a (insert chosen '-ism' or form of 'bigotry' here), so if you don't agree with me you must be a (insert chosen '-ist' or the word 'bigot' here)" thing. And that does not constitute "discussion".

And it's not just in 'Below The Line' threads, it happens in the 'Music' section too - personal attacks, private feuds carried on in public forum, very private issues exposed, and dirty washing aired for anyone and everyone to see. School playground stuff of the very worst kind

It's a kind of "I-Know-Better-Than-You" attempt at High-Ground-Taking and/or 'Morality-McCarthyism'. It really is Last-Refuge-Of-A-Scoundrel stuff spouted by those utterly possessed by their own dogmas and determined to force those dogmas down everyone else's throats.

I'm all for open and free debate, but this stuff stinks. Some people have a lot of growing up to do.

IMHO, YMMV.

Backwoodsman, I seem to read in your post that you think that the people who object to the use of abusive names about certain groups in society; posts which might be interpreted as incitement to violence against those groups; and glee about the hardships of those groups are in fact the problem. Objecting to such behaviour is surely not as toxic as that which is objected to?

Penny

Fossil,
"Keith A: you are not conforming to our standards. You don't have any "right" - even if you are an "adult" - to throw your weight about and introduce that sort of language and those sort of attitudes "

I personally have used no offensive language, and have been objecting to bullying tactics and offensive language of others.

I choose to open the thread.
I do not have to.

McGrath, fair comment.
I am not really asking that this thread be closed.

I would like to add my voice to the call to close the slavery thread as soon as possible.
Thanks.

Free speech within reason but nobody will tolerate you masturbating in a crowded street.

One only needs to look at the number of posts by a few reliable offenders in closed threads to see how threads get ruined. I think you guys should find someplace more friendly to flaming.
