'An t-Aparan Goirid's an t-Aparan Ur' is one of the tracks from Julie Fowlis's 2007 album 'Cuilidh'. I've been searching all over the internet for the guitar chords for this lovely song, but without success.

The chord changes are very subtle and I've given up on trying to figure them out.

It would make my day if someone who knew the chords were to read this & could pass them on. Thanks.

Richard

One problem is that you've got a bouzouki (probably tuned GDAD) and a guitar (probably DADGAD), both capoed up the neck. Makes for great ambiguity. Don't have time right now, but I'll try tomorrow to come up with chord equivalents in standard tuning. Check back, Richard.

That's fantastic Michael; thanks for responding. I only know standard tuning and it hadn't occurred to me that the tunings on the recording would be non-standard. It would explain why I've been having such difficulty working out what was being played. The instrumental 'sound' is quite different to what you get with convential tuning; it's what I would call 'minimalist' and lacking in some of the harmonic complexities of standard tuning.

I'm interested in the chord equivalents so that I can work out an instrumental version for myself. I'll leave the singing of the song to Julie !

Thanks again. Richard

Hi Richard -- the chromatic walk-down in the beginning of the song (e-eb-c#-b-a-g#-b-a) holds the clues. So slap your capo on the second fret and then forget it's there and pretend you're playing in D:

D D/C# D/B D/A
G G/F# Em A
D D/C# D/B D/A
G G/F# A D

The second line appears to have the most variations: several times I hear the F# bass come before the straight G (G/F# G Em A), and at least once there's a full-on F#m chord in that spot (F#m G Em A).

There are other variations, but this should get you started.

Here are some fingerings, in case you need them:

D    = xx0232
D/C# = x4x232
D/B = x20032
D/A = x00323

G    = 320033
G/F# = 2x0033
Em   = 022000
A    = x02220

F#m = 244222

I hope this helps. Have fun, and thank you for prompting me to listen to this lovely CD again.

Cheers,
Michael

Sorry, I made a mistake writing out the initial walk-down. It is e-eb-c#-b-a-g#-f#-a.

Crap! D/A is of course x00232.

Hi Michael - Many thanks for taking the trouble to give me these chords. I'm really looking forward to working something out with the tune. Shame it doesn't have a chorus just to give a bit of melodic variation. I've been playing guitar for over 40 years, so am ok on fingerings !

Have been away from a computer for past couple of days, hence slow response from me. Thanks again.
Richard
ps: off up to Denmark St, London today to buy a new capo.

Might you have the the DADGAD versions of the chords (if that is indeed the tuning)? I'm attempting to learn different tunings, especially those that lend themselves to traditional "folk" sounds.

Any help is greatly appreciated!
