How many people make a living out of pro football? Many, many hundreds of thousands, from the food stalls to the newspaper, TV and publicity people to the clothing makers (jersey-T-shirt etc.) to the construction workers who build the stadiums to the transportation companies etc. etc.

Now take the equally stupid pro soccer (football outside of N. Am.) "game" and add the even larger number of people who depend on it in one way or another for their livelihood and the answer is millions

It's not so much what the title of the thread says, but i just don't find it a compelling sport anymore. Perhaps it's because it's hard to know if there really is a person encased in those uniforms. All the padding makes them look three times as big (wide) as they really are. But mostly it's the headgear...helmets with multiple bars and a dark visor that looks like a space helmet, making it impossible to really see the player.

Watching basketball, baseball, football (soccer), and hockey(except for the goal keeper) allows one to actually see and recognize the participants. And except for baseball, these sports allow for pretty much continuous a.ction

I don't wish to argue the relative merits of the two sports but this business about pads and helmets making American football sissified is a myth. The pads and helmets actually serve as offensive weapons. You can lay a lot deadlier hit on someone without damaging your shoulder if its cushioned and covered in hard plastic.

I don't know why I picked the NFL--it's really football at any level. It's a sport for rednecks and ghetto-hoppers. It's a game where poor sportsmanship is rewarded as long as it's as ostentatious as it is pointless. It's a game where it's really about the audience and hence all the face paint, cheesehead hats, tailgate parties, shirtlessness in freezing weather, etc. The players are just tokens put on the field to reflect the fan mentality. It's game where winning has no importance outside of rubbing it in as mean and nasty as you can to the losing side but with classless pop culture cleverness. "You mad, bro?"   

This game should be outlawed just for being stupid.

Those lsted were not gunfighters (which was an invention of the motion pictures), but were law enforcement officers, or participated only in one or two affairs. No more deserving of the gunfighter appelation than Aaron Burr, who shot Hamilton in a duel.

I'm with Kendall. Local TV today is all football, baseball and golf with a few itinerant food tasters thrown in for good measure. Maybe they are fun to play but I find it mind-numbing to watch.
Of course, I feel the same way about Andre Rioux(SP?) and Celtic Thunder. Tops on my list of TV crap this month is Les Miserables done over and over and over as a PBS fundraiser. Somebody give the man a loaf of bread and free us all from this torment.

I'm in agreement with Kendall and you, SINS. I loved being involved with football, baseball, track and field, and martial arts when I was younger. But as for watching sports on tv, it ranks up there with watching paint dry, imo.

Yes, baseball is THE game. Fuck all the others. Polo? Get a life. A real game should have a purpose not worry about being classy. I've played baseball all my life. I've played football in very informal conditions as a boy but here's the problem with this "sport": There'a always some asshole who has to prove what a tough, macho dickhead he is by smashing into you as hard as he can. I'm not a pro player being paid millions to take hits so I'm really not cool with having a permanent spinal, rib or hip injury because I played a "harmless" game of football on somebody's front lawn with an asshole who thinks he should be playing on Dallas's front line (where he'd get killed in short order).

And as long as I have watched this sport or read about it, it just seems that football attracts assholes and brings out the worst in people. So when you tell me you love football, you're telling me everything I need to know about you: you're a dickhead. No other sport puts up with the bullshit of its athletes like football does. And the fans complain but still watch, still pay extravagant sums to go watch because they are just as bad as the athletes their money pays ridiculous salaries to. What other championship event gets more coverage than the Superbowl? For what other championship do corporation spend millions to air commercials specifically made for this event (some of teh commercials are ok but what the hell was that horrible Doritos commercial they aired last year doing on TV??)? It's ridiculous.

We use a colon to direct attention to matter that follows. Also we do not generally use the "serial comma" (comma before "and") anymore although there's some variation on this.

If I was being really nit-picky, I would point out that that should more properly be:

Unless this example of punctuation has been changed since I was at school, which is probable! I haven't seen speech-marks in a book for ages, for instance, and the serial comma, as you rightly point out, is another thing being abandoned. However, as it more correctly fits my old-world speaking patterns, I refuse to conform to this instance of modern modes. The whole point of punctuation is to enable the reader to 'hear' the writers language.

Of course, I'm not being nit-picky at all, just poking the borax at Mr. Webster's definitions, and using the incorrect word 'proper' to draw attention to that.

I don't think anyone who watches football and enjoys it really give a shit either way ... to each their own ... Me I love the game I played it in HS and yes it is a hard sport. Ya get knocked around .. ahhh so do tennis players with worn out knees, baseball players with worn out throwing arms ...

Rugby player with concussions ... there is no safe sport .. hell ya can fall on the ice if you ice skate ...

And how about the gymnastics, broken necks, bones ... falls ... yup it is all tough if you want to play any sport.

Dan... I gave up boxing when I realized my eyes protruded from the sockets far too far to be in the ring. A light tap and I was blind. I have the eyes and glasses to prove it. But, I wanted to be "my old man's son". He held three Maritime Canada weight division belts at once when he was fighting as Billy The Kid (takes on all comers) just before WW2. That generation truly was tough as nails.

I know that sounds disjointed but there it is.
