Subject: Tech: GOOGLE + From: John MacKenzie Date: 22 Sep 11 - 05:20 AM Google+ have managed to get a saboteur into FB, and he has written this new page format to drive people away from FB and on to Google+ Seems to be working great so far! |
Subject: RE: Tech: GOOGLE + From: Dave MacKenzie Date: 22 Sep 11 - 05:36 AM I don't do Dacebook, and I turned down my Google + invitation 'cos they wanted my mobile number - wouldn't take my phone number instead. |
Subject: RE: Tech: GOOGLE + From: John MacKenzie Date: 22 Sep 11 - 05:38 AM Hmmm, I don't remember having to provide a phone number at all? |
Subject: RE: Tech: GOOGLE + From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 22 Sep 11 - 09:47 AM good thing I wasn't interested in joining - I don't have a mobile! A few hours ago I was listening to my favourite techie on my local radio station talking about internet privacy, especially on social networks, mainly Facebook & Google+ He was outlining the problems with them, including lack of privacy, & how both insist users provide real name & can decide the name submitted isn't real (eg. some Hong Kong Chinese giving their a child European first name) & refuse the application, or suddenly decide to lock someone out of their account. |
Subject: RE: Tech: GOOGLE + From: Richard Bridge Date: 22 Sep 11 - 09:55 AM PLEASE read the Gargleplus T&Cs before signing up and decide what you would do if they asserted their rights in content - particularly content you later took down. In fact just read the T&Cs anyway. They go out of their way to exculpate themselves if a user posts anything about you that might be actionable - whether or not they take it down if you complain. If you want to sue them you have to do it in their jurisdiction. I don't know if they make it as impossible to complain about content as fakebook do - are there industry standard email addies like "abuse@" or the like? You have to have a google ID to join, and AFAIK those are back door keys to collecting private information about you. |
Subject: RE: Tech: GOOGLE + From: Richard Bridge Date: 22 Sep 11 - 09:57 AM But a "real names" rule properly enforced might well go some way to prevent some abuse so I'm all for it. |
Subject: RE: Tech: GOOGLE + From: Stilly River Sage Date: 22 Sep 11 - 10:20 AM If you set up Google Voice you can get a number assigned from Google, or you can link it to an existing number. I'm going to move a linked number over to Google completely once it gets to the end of the phone contract. I don't need it on a phone any more. Anyway, this would be enough for setting up Google+. It's open to all now, but many of us have invitations to send if you want one. SRS |
