How to organise a sell-out tour of the UK before you've physically released your first album here. Alt-folk 101.

That song "Poison and Wine" gives me chills. Great harmonizing!

I know! D'you see what I mean about there being something quite dark about them though?

Certainly in that song; I haven't heard much else from them.

Having lived there for some years, I can say there's definitely something quite dark about the (US) South.

I first hear this duo a couple of weeks ago. They are, from what I've seen and heard so far, much more interesting than most of the current crop of "country music" performers. As far as there being something "dark" about the south, that would probably make a good topic for a separate thread sometime. I think I might argue that it's not really "dark," but more varied and complex than many other regions. More textured. Unlike many other regions of our country, life is old there, as a song once said. And the American South has two primary, distinct divisions that much of the country is unaware of: The south of the mountain people of southern Appalachia is quite different from the lowland south of magnolias, live oak trees and plantations. Anyway, give the Civil Wars a listen.

I was living in Georgia (not part of the Appalachians), and I found that under the much-vaunted Southern hospitality there flows a barely-concealed undercurrent of menace and violence. You may call it "more textured", but to me it felt quite vicious. I was glad to get away from there.

Seems like pretty good music to me.

Give a listen (and a look) to the live version of "From This Valley" on YouTube. Wow. To michaelr, I travel extensively throughout the south and find way more hospitality than hostility. Like the blind men describing the elephant, however, we both could be correct.
