well Terry , we play Icelandic for foreigners and Celtic for the Icelanders , you play and sing the Irish and English songs better than us , so why should we sing in English for you ?

when you can do that so well .

I won't be at Getaway but here's my answer all the same: The grand total of what I know about Icelandic music started with your Mudcat links to youtube; I added to that slightly by watching/listening to some "suggested videos" youtube provided. While I haven't listened for several months, I loved what I heard so I anticipate listening to more and learning about it, hey maybe even playing some one day. Mind you I feel a few doubts since I'm a better singer than instrumentalist and I'm not confident about wrapping myself around the language.

I'm willing to bet there is any number of Mudcatters with similar exposure and knowledge levels, and other vocalists with similar doubts. I think non-native speaking instrumentalists will have an easier time with hands-on exploration of Icelandic music than will vocalists. Say, I don't suppose there's such a tradition as scat singing the Icelandic tunes?

In traditional Icelandic songs the accompanying voice is a parallel in 5th. Learned it at school with some examples in our book about musical theory and history.

Try Fidla (as I mentioned above, from Hortense Panum's Stringed Instruments of the Middle Ages) which orginally 2 horsehair strings, but latterly had four of brass as in the YouTube clip below.

That's the instrument I saw.

Lighter , I can think of one or two , but I think this hat to be chris Foster , he and his wife Bára Grímsdóttir play those instrument, its called Langspil.

Hey, Skarpi, I bet you can answer this!

I was once in Reykjavik and met a scholar who'd been researching the origins and use of a strange, box-shaped "fiddle" with no fretboard and only two (?) strings that was played in Iceland in the 18th Century (I think it was the 18th).

Do you know his name and the name of the instrument? It was almost the simplest stringed instrument you could imagine. He said that the only similar instrument he'd ever seen had come from Canadian Eskimos!

While I was there I heard a few lively traditional dance tunes. And that's everything I know about Icelandic music.

What do I know about Icelandic Music? Not a lot to be honest - Bjork, Sigur Ross, Amina, old pics of Fidlas and Langspils - and then there's the musical elements of Næturvaktin, which we only got in the UK earlier this year. Loved it I must say. An instant hit in our house. Hope they get round to showing Dagvaktin and Fangavaktin soon...
