Planning a week in North Wales (near Llanfairfechan), starting 30 September - have done the usual searches but so many clubs are listed as infrequent or the "wrong week of the month", so can any Catters recommend any particular clubs or sessions during the first week of October that are singer-friendly (as opposed to concert/guest nights)?

Hope you can find something. We're going to mid and south Wales later in the month. Last time we were in the north, we went to the Galeri in Caernarvon - looks like they have some good music coming in Oct --

Is the Thursday night session at the Newborough at Bontnewedd still going? When I was last there about 5 years ago it was very good with friendly musicians and singers.
Bontnewedd is about 1.5 miles South of Cearnafon on the Porthmadog Road. The pub is on the left at the Southern end of the village but the car park has a difficult entrance. I reckocn that is only about 15 miles from Llanfairfechan... Also there was a Friday night session at the Nelson(?) in Bangor, the people at Bontnewedd would know about that.

The Rhyl Folk Club website has a list of other clubs in North Wales, but it would be advisable to check with the venues first.

I met a couple of players from the Irish session at the Nelson in Bangor this summer so I gather that is still going strong.

While out walking in the Conwy valley recently I noticed that the Ty Gwyn pub in the village of Rowen was advertising a night of traditional Welsh singing on Fridays, but I have no idea what that is like. Could be worth a visit - the pub sells Lees beer!

Thanks for the replies so far.
I've checked out the list mentioned on Rhyl's site and the links from Conwy's, but there seems a real dearth of concrete and consistent information - and contact telephone numbers and email addresses seem very hard to find.

Thanks for the tipoff that the Nelson is an Irish session, Matthew, but yes ced2, it looks as though Bontnewedd might be my best bet for something singer-friendly.

Anything else I might have missed?

Cob Records in Bangor, and in Porthmadog, is always worth a visit; they usually have a very good selection of CDs and LPs, new and second-hand, which are guaranteed to lighten your wallet!

If you're looking at good quality mountain dulcimers do visit Bird Rock Dulcimers as I've heard some very good music played on some of these instruments made by Robin Clark.

Still no more takers ?
Surely someone out there must have some more relevant info to impart?

Looks like I'm going to have a very thin week otherwise ...

Moorley Man

The singers/folk scene in North Wales has never been very prolific.

Certainly those that have been mentioned, also there used to be an Irish come singers session in the kings Arms in Holyhead. Unfortunately the pub is now closed. However the band of us (Traedmoch) that started it all is still going! And they will probably be able to give you some info on what is happening around the bazaars.

Their website is at the following:

Traedmoch

Good luck and if you speak to Frank, tell him Chris sends his regards.

Chris
