I was wondering what plans we all have for probably the BIGGEST New Years Eve Celebration of our lives, or of anybody's life, possibly going back to the amazing blow-out thrown by William the Conqueror's Grandparents for the 1st Millenium.

Here are some options i'm considering:

1)Going to Bethlehem and sitting up all night in a lawn chair to await the Second Coming.

2)Chartering a sailboat,then watching the powergrid collapse from 10 miles out as the bonfires start to swell.

3)Drinking a bottle of Champagne, then nodding off on the couch so that I am totally unconscious as Dick Clark starts the New Years Count-down.

Anybody else? Of course, I don't have to remind you that we've all been invited to Ken Kesey's place in Oregon. So we've got that going for us.

I normaly like to be out in a pub for a few drinks on a New Years Eve but unless I can find somebody who is putting on a good (music) party, I think that I probably will stay at home and cook myself a nice meal and have a bottle of red wine thi time.

The best other alternative that I can think of where I live is to walk to the top of the Great Orme, make a bonfire and see it come in from there.

Well, my folk society has an annual dance on NYE. This year, the board voted to have optional formal dress and the usual potluck supper to be sit-down gourmet.

A sit-down gourmet potluck supper, and doing a balance & swing in a formal?? I suggested bringing sleeping bags and having a sleepover, in case none of us could get home.

Well I'm going to a barn dance in Derbyshire where the music will be provided by around twenty brilliant musicians ranging from about 16 to 20 years of age. (including my lad Sam) The new millenium is in safe hands!

I was thinking of getting my video camera out to record the implosion of this monitor and the meltdown of my hard drive. Then I was going to check with my bank to be sure all of the 1.7 billion was deposited in my account and with the credit bureau to assure that my new virtual files under the names "Hugh G. Rection" and "Ben Dover" were in place. Barrring any of that, I'm considering evacuating my bladder and winding my watch.

Well over in the UK the EFDSS Cecil Sharp House Ceilidh would be worth going to at any time (gbp 25 a head for 12 hours of dancing to superb bands isn't bad) - so we're breaking with tradition and celebrating new year this year.

I was getting very vexed over this one. Then I realised that I don't want to spend New Year turnover in a house with extended family (bah humbug)& a TV. Then I started thinking about what we (the immediate family) like to do. So now I am proposing to take a long walk along the riverside, or perhaps find a beacon up on the Berkshire Downs or something. Something outdoor, mellow & which will mean something special to us. Even if the weather is cat. Anyone know of any beacon fires or such?? Kris

7. Memorize the train schedule

8. See how many times in a row I can quickly say "millennium" without messing up

9. Phone the information operator in Fancy Farm, Kentucky and inquire about the weather

10. Alphabetize my spices

well, there's about 18 hours of Y2K going to hit the REST of the world before it gets to me, so I guess what I do at midnight will depend on whether I see New Zealand and Australia shutting down as Dec 31st progresses. Perhaps I'll just call Allan C and see if he needs help..(he left out flossing the dog's teeth and contemplating his eschatology)

Then NEXT year, I'll call Charlie Baum and see how it went..maybe we can study some old maps of New Jeesey.

Well I certainly won't be going to the Millennium Dome or any of the overpriced events on offer. I'll be spending it as every New Year with the spouse's sister & brother-in-law & ma-in-law & possibly occasional glimpses of nephews passing through, getting ratarsed (ahem, I mean enjoying convivial company), possibly "singing" the occasional song (my s-in-l encourages me to the despair of the others!) and going for bracing walks along the Blackwater estuary in Essex to blow away any lingering ill-effects.

Well - Here in Ireland Pat Sheridan has organised a huge hooly in Achill where there will a piped procession around the Island.

Loads of singing etc.

The adventure school has been fully booked out with outdoor water sports, fishing competitions, dances beach bar bq's etc.

Sorry folks - it's fully booked for 6 days 26th through 2nd.

LEJ, it happens to everybody. I've done far worse.

I just noted this New Year's Day (the beginning of the last year in the millennium, and the beginning of Y2K - gratuitous pedantia, but I can't help it.) falls on a Saturday. New Year's Eve is Fri night. Good time to stay off the roads, especially if all the traffic lights are going to go off at midnight. Maybe I'll just watch CNN until the TV goes dead. :-)

Lessee, what did all those Y2K sites recommend? Oh, yeah -
1. Clean all the guns.
2. Inventory the huge stock of toilet paper accumulated for barter (minimum 150 rolls).
3. Kill all the neighborhood cats and dogs, salt down the meat, make soap out of the fat and wood ashes and shoes out of the hide (Martha Stewart's planning on making gilded baskets out of the bones...)
4. Hold a ceremonial bonfire burning Bill Gates in effigy...

Seriously, our local folk shtetl will probably gather together and toast in 2,000 A.D. (After Disney?) with the motley assortment of fizzy alcoholic beverages we have accumulated and then nod off to sleep at 12:05...

How to smash up all your light bulbs and place them strategically so they crunch when your neighbors come to kill you for food? A cooking section - "Marinated Elmer and Sylvia," or "Pookie Pot Pie?"

Oh, yes, Jeri - did you realize that those lovely but worthless post-Y2K-crash stock certificates can be used to make exquisite wall paper or elegant stationery? And the artistic uses of multicolored circuit-board scraps? Quite lovely and intricate place mats can be macrame'd out of the many-colored strands of defunct phone cable. Why, the possibilities are endless!

Or huddled in my basement apartment in DC, looking for candle stubs, hoarding melting ice, congratulating myself on having the foresight to stockpile matches, contemplating the canned delicacies available to me, rationing out absorbent paper for bathroom use, and wondering how long it will be until the rioting and looting begin, and wondering when my perfect lover is coming back with whatever booze he can find so we can make a little hay before the shooting begins...

Or crammed in to my mother's house with my overdressed, extended family (whom I love anyway), pondering the odds of my perfect lover walking in the door (very slim), eating fattening food, drinking too much champagne (I love it until it makes me very sick, which it inevitably does), trying to remember hte words to Auld Lang Syne and failing, and having every child under the age of ten demanding my attention constantly while we all wait for Dick Clark to sprout a grey hair...

Do many pople here care the changing of the date from 1999 to 2000? I enjoy celebrating New Years Eve but I don't understand all the hype over this. What are we celebrating? Nothing more than 2000 years of a calender and surely the thousand change is only important because we happen to use base 10 in our numbers (which I reckon has something to do with us having 10 fingers).

Judging by a recent conversation, j0_77 and myself could be celebrating the year 07D0 in hex or 0111110100000 in binary if we wanted to!

Stopped doing NY eve about 6 years ago in favor of a big gathering at our house on Jan 1 during the day. We typically invite our friends with kids. The kids play and we prepare a big dinner and chat freindly like. Usually make a prime rib. We get a little drunk on beer and wine. People bring some great noshes.

This way we don't fight crowds at public NYE parties. We don't risk the road and the drunks. We don't blow our circadian rythyms all to hell. We don't watch the kids melt down because they're up too late, and we don't waste time pretending that a some guy lowering a lighted ball down a flagpole is a dramatic event.

Duckboots and I have it all planned. I will attempt to get a ridiculously high paying job playing in the millenium at the Scarborough Civic Centre. Duckboots will hang around for three hours and collect my cheque.

If that doesn't come about we will sit in our back yard and see if the dire predictions from the National Enquirer, Jack Van Impe (and his plasticized partner, Drexella) or the Church of the Solar Plexus come true.

If all else fails we are willing to travel to Ohio and watch Catspaw evacuate his bowels and wind his watch. We desperately hope it doesn't come to this.

I am Lucky!! over here in Guernsy on Millennium night various venues are paying inordinate amounts of money to any band they can bribe to play. this pisses me off because i do not understand how you can charge a pub 4000 pounds for the same material you will charge £180 three days later. We have been offered 3 days in Sark for about £300 all drinks accomodation and travel and a lot of fun!! No Cars, No thugs, and more to the point no guilty feeling of having ripped off the bread and butter train, I dont know when mill whatsit really is but I'm going to enjoy it anyway.

In Maine, in the middle of winter there is not much to do, except watch cans rust, or if you like action, you can watch flies die on the window sills.

There's a small pub in West Clare which, on the last few New Years Eves that I've managed to pass there with the love of my life, could hold about a dozen musicians - as long as none of them played the double bass. I've considered investing in a bass, but decided that, apart from being anti-social, it would restrict elbow-bending room. I'm assuming that the Guinness kegs will have no more bugs than usual. If the cooling system dies - so much the better - I prefer my stout reasonably close to blood heat!

I think you're on to something in your activity numbered 4 on your list, cataloging the flavors of burps created by various beers. We could get a bunch of us involved (sick puppies like Catspaw will be a sure bet), capture those burps in zip-lock bags and mail them to each other. Then at midnight we could open our gaseous little prezzies, sniff, and try to guess the provenance of the brew. A shared experience for auld lang syne.

All kinds of new-year days coming up associated with Y2K and Y(2K+1), besides the familiar calends of January (Gregorian).

The western Christian lectionary year, which has 364 (sometimes 371) days begins on the Sunday in the week of November 27. It begins on Nov. 28, 1999 for year 2000 and on Dec 3, 2000 for year 2001.

The lunar new year of the Gregorian Easter cycle begins at sunset on December 7, 1999 for year 2000 and at sunset on December 26, 2000 for year 2001.

The year 2000 (Julian Calendar) begins on January 14, 2000 (Gregorian Calendar). The year 2001 (Julian Calendar) begins on January 14, 2001 (Gregorian Calendar); since 2000 is a bissextile year in both calendars, the phase-difference between the two stays the same until the year 2100.

This is, of course, only the Julian and Gregorian 2K+1. The 2K+1 of the emperor Diocletian is coming up in about 280 years or so. The 3K+1 of Nebuchadnezzar is due in about 250 years; 3K+1 Urbis Conditae is due a few years before that. The Byzantine year 8K+1 is due in about 490 years.

So party early and often.

At our bank, Bank of New York, we are working hurriedly to finish testing with all our clients before the end of the year(everything) and I over heard one of our testers, who sits in the cubicle right next to me, talking to one of our clients while testing.

The client casually asked him if we were finished testing all our software for Y2K yet. I loved his answer. "Heck", he said. "We're testing for Y3K already".

T-in-Ok-- yop. That road just east of Western goes through what used to be the little town of Britton. When I was a kid, it was a town all by itself.

WW: Actually it was LarryB that mentioned Britton Road (though I suppose I might've if he hadn't) A little north of Britton Road (=93d NW), off Pennsylvania, is North Britton Park. That and Britton Road seems to be all that's left, as far as the cartographers are concerned, of Britton.

Oh, journalists are actually a sort of well-behaved lot these days, dammit. My first boss, 20 years ago, always kept a fifth of Scotch in his desk drawer and would dramatically bring it out and set it on his desk at the drop of a hat. He had milk and vodka for breakfast, but was a terrific editor.

In my first newsroom we could smoke at our desks, and I thought that was an important part of looking like a journalist, so I did -- until I emptied the ash tray into the trash can and was in the middle of an interview when flames leaped up from under the desk.

Nowadays, it's double lattes at 4 p.m. to get us through the late deadlines. And I actually meet a couple of fellow journalists at the gym in the mornings at 6:30. Not like the old days, nosirreebob...

But for the millennium, maybe I"ll actually order some bubbly for the gang. We ought to get something for working while the entire rest of the world is wearing funny hats and playing with noisemakers.

Well, living in New York City as i do, I will probably be in a car frantically trying to escape to somewhere just a wee bit safer..probably Jersey...I've already stockpiled cans though, just in case. Either that, or I will be spending time with my lover, unless he's planning to do something..I really hate big parties unless they are really just an excuse for a huge session, but I don't think I'll be able to find anyone interested in doing that over here on New Years Eve. *sigh*

one year at school we did get naked (a few of us anyway, mostly girls), and a cop came. !!!!!!! when we saw him coming we jumped under our sweaters and looked innocent. as it turned out, he had seen the fire from the road and was just coming to make sure everything was okay. he was a nice guy; small town iowan, new to the force, no discernible predjudices towards snooty intellectual college kids. : ) he did mention that he thought he might have seen someone "without their clothes on", and cautioned us not to "burn any _parts_" wink wink nudge nudge knowattahmean? hahahahahaha! yup, good joke!

later we heard through the grapevine that he had really wished he wasn't on duty so he could join the party. LOVE! usually, though, the pagans i know try to avoid getting naked at public events, just 'cause some folks aren't comfortable with it. one girl left after the nakedness began, and later we learned that she had been sexually abused as a child. damn, did i feel guilty.
