Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Mo Thruaighe Lèir thu 'ille Bhuidhe From: Jim Dixon Date: 16 Dec 11 - 02:11 PM MO THRUAIGHE LÉIR THU, 'ILLE BHUIDHE can be found in The Gaelic Songster: An t-òranaiche (Glasgow: Archibald Sinclair, 1879), page 97—under the heading (title?) ORAN. Both the song text and the introductory remarks are in Gaelic, which is Greek to me, and would be tedious for me to transcribe, and copy-and-paste doesn't work for most of this book. Of course, anyone who is able to glean any interesting information there, would be welcome to post it here. |

Subject: Lyr Add: Mo Thruaighe Lèir thu 'ille Bhuidhe From: RunrigFan Date: 29 Sep 11 - 10:13 AM This is a song from Doimnic Mac Giolla Bhríde & Griogair Labhruidh album Guaillibh A' Chéile Quite long. I'm sure I heard it sung under a different name. --------------------------------------- Mo thruaighe lèir thu 'ille bhuidh 'S ann an-diugh tha an dèidh ort! Mo thruaighe lèir thu 'ille bhuidh Oh my Pity Yellow Haired Lad, 'Tis today that they'l be after you! Oh my pity yellow haired lad, --------------------------------------- Chuir sinn cruinn sa bhàta Dà lath mun d'fhag sinn Èirinn. We put masts into the boat Two days before we sailed from Ireland -------------------------------------- Mo thruaighe lèir thu 'ille bhuidh'... Oh my Pity Yellow Haired Lad'... --------------------------------------- Chuir sinn na cruinn ùr'innte Is fhuair sinn smùid na dhèidh leinn We put the new masts into her And got a good gust in her sails --------------------------------------- Bha cutteran is gàidseran Gar sàrachadh le chèile. Excisemen and 'gaugers' All harassing us together ----------------------------------------- Bha fùdar is luaidh Shasannach "Toirt farum air a dèile English gunpowder and lead Making her planks rattle ----------------------------------------- Bha sinn sa Chuan Iar leith' Mun d'rinn a' ghrían ach èirigh We were in the Western Sea with her Before the sunrise ---------------------------------------- Nuair a dh'àt an fhairgr 'S i an Earbaga bha treubhach When the sea swelled The Earbag (young roe) held strong ----------------------------------------- Bha 'n Eaebag's i cho dìonach Ri botal fion is cèir air The Earbag was as watertight As a wine bottle with sealing wax on it ----------------------------------------- Dol seachad Maol na h-Òighe Gun d'òl sinn air a chèile. Going past Maol na h-Òighe We drank to each other's heath ---------------------------------------- D'òl sinn slàint' an sgiobair Nach robh idir anns an èisteachd We drank to the captain's health Although he was no longer with us ---------------------------------------- 'S dhòl sinn buaidh bhàta Thug sàbhailt' sinn à Èirinn And we drank a health to the boat Which carried us safely from Ireland. ---------------------------------------- Seachad Caisteal Dhubhairt leith' Gun robh ar turas rèidh leinn. Going past Castle Duart Our course held steady --------------------------------------- 'S bha sinn ann an Loch Àlainn Mun d'rinn ach pàirt dhiubh èirigh And we were in Lochaline Before part of them (the crew) arose) |
