Lots of songs of that and similar names. Can you give us a the first line or two and anything mentioned in the sleevenotes as a starting point?

Regards

Hi and thanks for your response...

Chorus
Though we bid farewell in sorrow
We may meet again in distant lands
And drink a health in joy for parting
And the exile will return again

Don't have the CD, my sister bought it and loaded it to her ipod so we could listen to it on a recent car trip. made her play it over and over... guess I need to look at the liner notes, and maybe copy it out by hand. It is very very fine-- I was totally fooled into thinking it was traditional... VERY VERY SINGABLE!--my best tribute ;)

I'm really eager to see Karan and John perform here in Oregon on 3-10-2011.

Really glad you mentioned this album which I didn't know about.

Got it yesterday and think it is lovely. Sat down and worked out the outline of how to play Exile's Return tonight and agree that it's a lovely song.

It's on Karan Casey's web site in the audio section if you are still looking to work out the lyrics.

I just returned from seeing Karan Casey and John Doyle in performance at Pacific University in Forest Grove,Oregon.Karan is singing better than ever, and,in my estimation is a folk music superstar. What a voice! What a social conscience.A cherished woman. She'll be in Olympia ,Washington tomorrow night. In you're in that area,do try to see her. She's an important artist.

I will be seeing John Doyle in November, and intend to ask him about the lyrics.

In the meantime I've worked out a version that is passable for covering by my band, but there are certain lines which I know to be not correct.

Here (finally) are the lyrics -- straight from John himself:

EXILES RETURN
John Doyle

When winter comes and all is silent,
the saddled mare is tightly bound.
Fox she prowls on down by the moonlight.
Snow lays thickly on the ground.

Though we bid farewell in sorrow,
we will meet again in distant lands
and drink a health in joy for parting
when the exile will return again

The hearth is hard to leave this long night
We face a long and a treacherous road
Hard times must be faced undaunted
Our loved ones lighten up our load

Though we bid farewell in sorrow,
we may meet again in distant lands
and drink a health in joy for parting
when the exile will return again

The distant cairn of Cnoc na Ré stands
Bare and bleached o'er Queen Medb's tomb
O'Hara's castle stands undaunted
Waiting for her lands to bloom

Though we bid farewell in sorrow,
we may meet again in distant lands
and drink a health in joy for parting
when the exile will return again

The night is cold, the children are sleeping
Restful dreams of Tir na nÓg
Jeanie Johnston's bound for sailing
Now my friend it's time to go

Though we bid farewell in sorrow,
we may meet again in distant lands
and drink a health in joy for parting
when the exile will return again

Though we bid farewell in sorrow,
we may meet again in distant lands
and drink a health in joy for parting
when the exile will return again

when the exile will return again

You're welcome.

I had it almost figured out, too.   But there were a couple of lines where I knew I was a bit off.   Showed the whole thing to John, who got a good laugh at the errors, and graciously supplied corrections.

(He also said that when he sings the song himself he sometimes substitutes "for kin and comrades" for "in joy for parting" in the third line of the refrain.)
